Bible Note: Dear Brother Robin, There's an old, humorous aphorism heard in many an American seminary that goes "Young's is for the young, Strong's is for the strong, and Cruden's is for the crude." :-) Nevertheless, those three seem to be among the more prevalent and preferred by serious students of the Bible. But I empathize with your consternation. When Biblical language tools introduce a doctrinal perspective they take on a fundamentally different role than what is expected of them. This is understandable in an dictionary such as Vine's (see, for example, the entry on "tongues"), since they make no bones about their purpose; i.e., "Vines EXPOSITORY Dictionary of New Testament Words." On the other hand, all of the above tools enjoy a common appreciation across a wide spectrum of doctrinal and denominational persuasions. That's quite an accomplishment and should not be underestimated. One might suppose, therefore, that they deserve a bit of latitude for the occasional infraction. In Him, Doc |
