Bible Question:
Why is there an apparant difference between what Abraham told the servant in Genesis 24:8 and here? In verse 8 Abraham says his servant will be free of his oath if the woman isn't willing, but when the servant relays the conversation, he implies that the family can also nix the deal. Is this just deference and diplomacy on the part of the servant toward the family? Or is something else going on? Like the servant is expanding his mandate on his own? epbentley |
Bible Answer: Hi epbentley, Welcome to the forum. Genesis 24:48, "And I bowed low and worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who guided me in the right way to take the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son." The servant was told by God in Genesis 24:7 that he would be sent His angel (NASB) Angel (NKJ) so that a wife would be found for Abraham's son. The bottom line of the whole story is that the Angel was in charge from the start. All the servant had to do was leave it in the hands of the Angel. When the servant came to the relatives and prayed to the Lord, the God of his servant Abraham in Gen 24:12 for success, then his work was done. Genesis 24:21, "Meanwhile, the man was gazing at her in silence, to know whether the Lord had made his journey successful or not." Again I say that it was all in the hands of the Angel. Genesis 24:27, "...as for me, the Lord has guided me in the way to the house of my master's brothers." 1) As for Laban and Bethuel, the parents of Rebekah, the bride to be; they had no part in it at all. Genesis 24:50, "The matter comes from the Lord; so we cannot speak to you bad or good." 2) As for Rebecca's brother, he had no say in the matter; for Rebecca left right away instead of staying ten days or so with him and the mother. The servant said, "Do not delay me, since the Lord has prospered my way. Send me away that I my go to my master." 3) Rebekah said, "I will go." 4) So even though the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done, the bottom line was that the Angel had gone before him and accomplished everything. I go with the NKJ and the capitalized Angel of God. How about you? From the heart, Ray |
