NASB | Genesis 22:12 He said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 22:12 The LORD said, "Do not reach out [with the knife in] your hand against the boy, and do nothing to [harm] him; for now I know that you fear God [with reverence and profound respect], since you have not withheld from Me your son, your only son [of promise]." |
Bible Question: Why was jephthah allowed to kill his daughter but Abraham not allowed to kill his son? |
Bible Answer: It's possible Jephthah redeemed his daughter according to the provisions of Leviticus: Lev 27 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons shall be for the LORD by thy estimation. 3 And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary. 4 And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels. 5 And if it be from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels. For a daughter under 20 years old, Jephthah would have paid to the temple 10 shekels, and her life would be spared. The priests would have been able to tell him this. We don't know exactly what happened. As to whether God would condone such an act, I think what He said through Hosea bears direct application: Hos 6:6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
