Bible Question: Not having much interest in the bible until recently, I always assumed that sodomy was condemned in the bible because of something that happened in Sodam. I have only found where it talks of the wickedness of the men of Sodom. Are there any references that mention this subject? I know that in Genesis 9:20-25, Noah curses his son's son for having been seen naked, but I am still far to new in this journey to have the answer that I see is coming closer to being needed in my workplace. Diversity is a big thing there, including the right of homosexuals to display rainbow stickers and such. I am afraid that when confronted, all I will be able to say is "it ain't right", which should be good enough, but quotes from the scripture would be better. Thanks, Mark. |
Bible Answer: Hello, Mark -- Darcy gave you a number of helpful Old Testament references. The biblical condemnation of sodomy is carried over into the New Testament as well. Two examples from the New King James Version: [1] 1 Corinthians 6:9 "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals(a), nor sodomites(b)" --- The footnotes are from the NKJV: --- (a) catamites, those submitting to homosexuals (b) male homosexuals ...... [2] 1 Timothy 1:10 (please read this verse in the context of the opening 9 verses of the chapter): "for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine." ..... The etymology of our English word "sodomy" is indeed derived from the homosexual proclivites of the men of the city of Sodom in Genesis 19:1-11. The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled sodomy legal, but God has not made any new rulings. Sodomy was an abomination to Almighty God in the days of Sodom and it has remained an abomination to Almighty God till this very day, and His ruling trumps the Supreme Court ruling any day of the week! His is the only court, and He the only Judge, that can rightly be called Supreme. --Hank |
