Bible Question: What kind of people were the moabites, what did they believe in and why did Naiomi and her husband go to Moab for in the beginning and why did she stay? |
Bible Answer: Dear Letty, Moab was a city state founded by the son born of the incestuous relationship of Lot and one of his daughters. God speaks disparagingly of these people, calling them His "wash-pot" in Psalm 108. The Moabites tended to be troublesome for Israel throughout their history. They were ultimately conquered by Egypt and later invaded by the Amorites. It is believed the Moabites were pastoral nomads. Like most of the other semitic people they were polytheistic. Not much can be said clearly about their religions. It is known that they worshiped the goddess Ashtar-Chemosh and the god Nebo. There's some indication that their religious rituals involved sexual rites. Elimelech and Naomi were there in Moab because of a famine in their own land (Ruth 1:1). Their sons married Moabite women. Elimelech and his sons eventually die in Moab. Naomi decides to go back to her own land and people outside Jerusalem. One of the daughters chooses to accompany her, and the other chooses to remain in in Moab, her home. You can read all of this in Ruth. I hope this sketchy bit of knowledge will help. :-) In Him, Doc |
