NASB | Genesis 17:23 ¶ Then Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all the servants who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the very same day, as God had said to him. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 17:23 ¶ Then Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all the servants who were born in his house and all who were purchased with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin the very same day, as God had said to him. |
Bible Question (short): Why circumcise Ishmael? |
Question (full): I see here Abraham circumcising Ishmael and all his household as he was commanded to do in vs. 12. What I am curious about is why this was commanded when other verses in this chapter describe that God will continue His covenant through Isaac. By circumcising Ishmael, does the promise of God, "to be their God," extend to the Ismaelites (Arabs) too? Of course I understand that God is God over all His creation. What I'm referring to is the distinction between the roles of both step brothers. |
