AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty; Walk [habitually] before Me [with integrity, knowing that you are always in My presence], and be blameless and complete [in obedience to Me]. |
Bible Question: Who was the LORD (the Almighty God) to whom this verse refers? Is He God the Father, God the Son, or God the Holy Spirit? Which God appeared and talked to Abram? |
Bible Answer: Genesis 17:1 (NASB) 1 Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless. John 1:18 (NASB) 18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him. It seems we have a contradiction but let us consider yet one more verse. John 4:24 (NASB) 24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." I believe this tells us God the Father is Spirit and natural man in his present form does not see Spirits. What we are seeing is a Christophanies, that is when one the Godhead becomes manifest to natural man it is really Jesus Christ that man is actually seeing. I might add this is the only explanation that removes the clear contradiction between Gen 17:1 and John 1:18 |
