Bible Question:
In Genesis 15: 11-13 Why did Abram divide everything except the birds in his sacrifice? Why did Abraham experience horror when God put him to sleep? Why does the fact that he had to drive fowls away from the carcasses symbolize? Chusarcik |
Bible Answer: The act of dividing the animals is part of blood covenant ritual. Birds aren't divided because they are so small, two are used and one is laid on either side. There are two schools of thought on the horror. One is God is holy and to be in his presence evokes a fear, or dread that may be described as horror. The other school of thought as you read this God is showing Abraham what his descendants will experience. Abraham saw their 400 years of bondage as a horror. The fowls that Abraham drives away, again there are two opinions One there are demonic coming to try to steal the animals in an attempt to stop the covenant from being made. The other school of thought is these vultures represent the world's care and worries along with our own doubts and wavering faith that Abraham had to fight in order to receive the covenant. Notice the smoking oven and torch they represent God who alone walks the covenant aisle. It was His promises and actions not Abraham’s that would be realized in this covenant. EdB |
