Bible Question: Is a Hebrew the same as a Jew |
Bible Answer: Hi, joshua... Hebrews were of Semitic origin. A Jew is a person who is descended from Abraham or is an adherent to Judaism. In the context of lineage, Abraham was an Hebrew (Genesis 14:13). Thus, all the descendants of Abraham are Hebrew. There is also a language Hebrew, so the word can refer to the nationality and the language. The word Jew sometimes simply meant a citizen of the Kingdom of Judah -- one of the twelve tribes of Israel. As you will recall, Judah was the fourth son of Jacob (Genesis 29:35). Jacob was the son of Isaac (Genesis 25:26), and Isaac was the son of Abraham (Genesis 21:2-3). In other contexts, a Jew is an adherent to Judaism. There are many different nuances of the words Hebrew, Israel, and Jew. You might check a couple of good Bible dictionaries to understand the meaning of these words in their specific textual and historic context. In Him, Doc |
