Bible Question:
I Corinthians 14:34-35 Should these verses be taken literally, at face value?? If so, WHY, and to what degree?? and Why doesn't it seem to be practiced today?? If not, WHY NOT?? This is what William MacDonald had to say on these verses in his Commentary, "It is often contended that what Paul is forebidding in this verse is for the woman to chatter or gossip while the service is going on. However, such an interpretation is untenable. The word here translated speak-laleo-did not mean to chatter in Koine Greek. The same word is used of God in v.21 of this chp., and in Hebrews 1:1. It means to speak authoritatively. Indeed, women are not permitted to ask questions publicly in the church. If they want to learn something, they should ask their husbands at home..." Also, I personally believe that God has the ability to write His word in a fashion that crosses Time and Culture, therefore, without STRONG biblical support for such an answer, I would have a difficult time excepting Time and Culture as an answer. So, face value or not?? Why or Why Not?? Talk to me. |
Bible Answer: 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. They can be taken for face value. As long as we are speaking of the face of the looking glass of scripture and not our own definitions of the words. If we define "keep silence" as the other "keep silence" that has been mentioned just a few verses before concerning men, we understand it means, don't talk when you should not be, not don't talk becuase you are a woman. It has to do with disruption of the service. Not saying anything about the details we do not know about but only sticking to the text itself we have Paul saying to those that speak in tongues to do it two or three in a service and then only if there is an interpreter, if not "KEEP SILENT" in the church and let him speak to himself and to God, then we have Paul saying to those that would give a prophesy.. do so two or three and if one is speaking the other should "KEEP SILENT" then he gets to the women who would ask questions and they are told to "KEEP SILENT" and if the reader is following the flow and logic of the admonition he immediatly understands that it must refer to some type of "confusion" or interuption that was being caused by the asking of questions. Then we understand that the spirit an theology of the rest of the new testament does not "jell" with a rule that would suggest that as soon as women walk in the church they must not utter a sound until they leave does it? Of course not, so we know that it must be about interuptions and confusion which is what the whole chapter deals with. May God Bless You as You Look into the Face of the Mirror of the Word and are Changed Day by Day. |
