Bible Question (short): Face Value or Not |
Question (full): I Corinthians 14:34-35 Should these verses be taken literally, at face value?? If so, WHY, and to what degree?? and Why doesn't it seem to be practiced today?? If not, WHY NOT?? This is what William MacDonald had to say on these verses in his Commentary, "It is often contended that what Paul is forebidding in this verse is for the woman to chatter or gossip while the service is going on. However, such an interpretation is untenable. The word here translated speak-laleo-did not mean to chatter in Koine Greek. The same word is used of God in v.21 of this chp., and in Hebrews 1:1. It means to speak authoritatively. Indeed, women are not permitted to ask questions publicly in the church. If they want to learn something, they should ask their husbands at home..." Also, I personally believe that God has the ability to write His word in a fashion that crosses Time and Culture, therefore, without STRONG biblical support for such an answer, I would have a difficult time excepting Time and Culture as an answer. So, face value or not?? Why or Why Not?? Talk to me. |
