Bible Question (short): What became of the Asherah prophets? |
Question (full): Elijah requests Ahab to retrieve 450 Baal prophets and 400 Asherah prophets who sit at Jezebel's table to meet at Mount Carmel. At Mt. Carmel there is a "showdown" to contest the powers of Baal and Yahweh. Baal prophets are given a choice of two bulls or oxen to place as a sacrifice for Baal to consume by fire and Elijah uses the remaining animal as his sacrifice to God. But there seems to be no reference to the Asherah prophets during this process. There is no mention of obtaining a sacrifice for their turn. The Baal prophets seem to acting alone when they perform their ritualistic appeal to Baal. When Elijah commands the seizure of the Baal prophets he makes no mention of the Asherah prophets who were invited to this gig. Obviously, the Baal prophets heard about Elijah's challenge. What might have happened with the Asherah prophets? I'm wondering if they got to be spectators at the big showdown, and the Baal prophets were object lessons as to what happens to false prophets. What do you think happened with the Asherah prophets? |
