Heb 4:12
For the word of God is living and active
and
full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged
1
sword, penetrating as far as the division of the
2
soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing
and
judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Amplified 2015 Translator's Notes:
Literal renderings, alternate translations or explanations.
1
In addition to "sword," the word in Greek was used for the knife used by the priests to slit the throats of the sacrificial lambs and for the knife (scalpel) used by a surgeon.
2
"soul and spirit" used here to emphasize the whole person, not two separate entities as in other passages.
