The ruins of ancient Memphis are located on the west bank of the Nile River, about twelve miles south of Cairo.

This city was located on the eastern edge of the Nile delta. Known today as Tell Defenneh (Defneh). Memphis and Tahpanhes were the most powerful Egyptian cities at this time.
