Searcher, you have a knack for getting to the heart of the issue! Excellent citation! Regarding #3, about which NT ideas are necessary, you said "all of them" and I totally agree. Of course, as we often see in this forum, there are diverse opinions about what those ideas are and how they influence us. 3a. Can you list a few that you feel are central to our relationship with Christ and/or are generally accepted as uniquely definitive of Christianity? Regarding #2, about which OT ideas are necessary, you said "we need to understand how the OT points to Christ". Again, an excellent answer. 2a. Can you describe a few ways how the OT does this? Regarding #1, about which ideas are necessary to accept the authority of Scripture, you said "because one accepts Scripture as the Word of God does not mean one is saved" and "without the Spirit, His Word is confounding". How true! 1a. Is there any hope for those who do not have the Spirit? In other words, is there anything they can/must do so that He may/will reside in them? Your Brother in Christ, Parable |

82 | Luvconquers, do you confess Jesus..... | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 48320
Perhaps 1 John 4:20 is the best answer to Luvconquers' historically based objections to the authority of Scripture. Those who did violence and justified it in the name of the Lord were not acting according to the command from Him to love others, as indicated by srbaegon's response. Parable |

83 | READ ALL THAT YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON! | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 48329
Perhaps the Bible agrees with you...about knowledge, that is. "Test everything. Hold on to the good." -- 1 Thessalonians 5:21 So, here are some things to hold on to! "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." -- James 1:5 "But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice." -- James 3:14-17 "To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his" -- Job 12:13 "Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds of the air." -- Job 28:20-21 "God understands the way to it (wisdom) and he alone knows where it dwells, for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens." -- Job 28:23-24 "For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength." -- 1 Corinthians 1:25 and perhaps most significantly, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." -- 1 Corinthians 1:18 Parable |

84 | Can anyone answer these simple questions | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 48348
I'll try. Your question: "If a stranger invades your home and beats, rapes, mutilated, brainwashed, and/or kills your family, can these type of demons be trusted?" My answer: You can trust them to remain true to their nature. If they are alive to sin, you can trust them to be sinful. However, with God all things are possible, so if they die to sin and are born again, the old nature dies and God gives them a new nature in Him. So long as they abide in Christ and obey His commandments, you can trust that they will live according to His nature. Your question: "How or why would we think that The True Loving God would allow his name to be defiled by having such DECEIVERS BRING THE WORD OF GOD TO THE WORLD." My answer: God gives us our freewill so that we may freely accept Him. Some choose other than His ways, including what you have described. If He did not allow this, our choice to be with Him would have no meaning. People defile the Name of God in many ways, including the one you describe. Yet, God can turn every curse into a blessing; I note how persecution of the Jerusalem church caused the church to grow. Had the first Christians not been persecuted for their faith, it is doubtful they would have ever left Jerusalem. Did God persecute the church to make this happen? All that we beleive tells us the answer is "NO". Rather, we believe He did find a way to use that wickedness for His purposes. Unfortunately, the rest of your post seems to violate term #2 of this forum not to attack "the authority of the Bible". However, at the risk of promoting further violations, I respond: You said: "in order to spread the WORD OF GOD, you first have to mentally destroy an individual and then try and rebuild planting a whole new way in their head." My response: Ironically, you have described a perversion of what the Bible teaches, i.e. that we must die on the cross with Christ, then be resurrected to new life. You said: "The Truth is so powerful that all you have to do is speak it!" My response: A liar will not be believed even if he is telling the truth. I'm not sure if this statement, or anything like it is in the Bible, but it seems true enough. You said: "we don't have to pray to a priest, or minister in order to get to God." My response: True. However, we have access to God the Father only through Christ. Without the righteousness bestowed upon us by Him, we cannot enter the presence of the Father. You said: "Your spirit is your real truth, for it is God speaking to you." Jesus said: "I am the truth." You said: "No book in this world can limit, or DEFINE GOD." The Bible does neither, rather it teaches that God is real, loves us and wants to have a relationship with us. Indeed, the Bible teaches that God is limitless and cannot be defined. Parable |

87 | What is the most used word in the Bible? | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 52555
Sorry, I couldn't resist :) To answer your question better....wouldn't it depend on which translation you picked? If you were interested in the original Hebrew or Greek, you probably aren't interested in the articles or pronouns, but rather the "meaningful" words, right? This makes counting more difficult. Also, some words that you might consider to be the same might appear in different forms, e.g. hear, heard, see, saw, etc. It seems your question could be very easy or very difficult to answer, depending on what you mean. In any case, the way to go about it would be to do a word count with a digital version using a computer. Parable |

89 | big-bang theory | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 66606
You should discuss this with an astro-physicist or astronomer, not bible forum expositors. But, since you ask....yes, the theory of the Big Bang is a reasonable projection into the past, a logical extrapolation based on well-established astromical data. It's generally accepted by those in the field, although like any healthy academic discipline, there is continuing debate and revision whenever some new observation comes to light, no pun intended. To me, BB confirms the universe was created from nothing, on a scale commensurate with the magnificence of God and with beauty commensurate with His holiness. The theory suggests that before the event, absolutely nothing physical existed, i.e. no matter, space, energy nor time. Yes, it is theorized that time and space themselves were created at the BB; it is not correct to say that before Creation there was just empty space. Then, at the beginning, our universe appeared in an infinitely dense, infinitely hot, zero-dimensional singularity. This is the point where the equations break down. As a committed Christian, I know God created the universe, as revealed in His Word. As a scientist and educator at a university, I accept the understanding of Creation afforded by modern science. There are some who suggest these two views are mutually exclusive, perhaps because their understanding of science does not fit with their understanding of scripture. I note that there are also some, whom we rightly call heretics, who say that Jesus cannot be both God and man. |

90 | big-bang theory | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 66791
Greetings Lionstrong, The thesis of Dr. Morris' article is "the Big Bang model for the origin of the universe certainly does not come from Scripture." On this point I certainly agree with Dr. Morris. My response was to a different question, "is the big-bang theory even remotely realistic?" According to science, it is. I am not surprized that Dr. Morris sees things differently. After all, he is a Professor of Geology at the Institute for Creation Research, an organization that, to my knowledge, has yet to publish a peer-reviewed article in a reputable scientific journal. For a critical review of the ICR, especially its reputation in the science community at large, see "Tower of Babel" by Robert T. Pennock. Blessings, Parable |

91 | Is Quakerism valid? | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 80286
Some scholars hold that Quakerism is a third form of Christianity, distinct from catholicism and protestantism. Yet, Quakers have also been persecuted as heretics. Is Quakerism a legitimate form of Christianity? Please support thine answer with scripture. |

92 | What does scripture say about Quakerism? | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 80344
Thank you, Emmaus. I am especially interested in any scriptures that support or counter Quaker views on issues such as: The "Inner Light", especially in relation to the authority of Scripture. This seems to be a defining feature of Quakerism. Predestination. Quakerism rejects this in favor of the idea that salvation is available to all. Silence. Only in silence can the voice of God within be heard. Conscience and action. Only by doing the truth can it be fully understood. Parable |

93 | Are injury lawsuits okay with God? | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 81604
I concur that you should seek counseling elsewhere, perhaps from your pastor and an attorney. Given that, your situation is worthy of comment here in that how we apply biblical principles to our lives is an important part of understanding God's Word. Here's my view: Those who failed to obey the law are accountable for their actions. If you do nothing, they will still be accountable to God. Yet, you have suffered as a result of wrongful acts and are entitled to just compensation. The bible prescribes such terms in several places as a means to preserve social justice. God has ordained the authorities so they may adjudicate situations like yours. You are called to act according to love for God and others, as the Spirit leads you. It may be that the loving thing to do is hold someone accountable. On the other hand, mercy is always an option, but there is always a cost. Only you can decide if the cost is something God wants you to bear for those who hurt you. I believe you are free to pursue legal action, but I also believe that you are not required to do so. |

94 | the meaning of life | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 82520
This is for those who would like to read in one sitting a good overview of what the Bible says about the meaning of life. The following 40 statements based on scripture are from "The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth am I Here For?" by Rick Warren. If you want verse references, they're in the book. -------------- It's not about me. I am not an accident. Living on purpose is the path to peace. There is more to life than just here and now. Life is a test and a trust. This world is not my home. It's all for Him. I was planned for God's pleasure. God smiles when I trust Him. The heart of worship is surrender. God wants to be my best friend. I'm as close to God as I choose to be. God wants all of me. God is real, no matter how I feel. I was formed for God's family. Life is all about love. I am called to belong, not just believe. I need others in my life. Community requires committment. Relationships are always worth restoring. It is my responsibility to protect the unity of the church. I was created to become like Christ. It is never too late to start growing. The truth transforms me. There is a purpose behind every problem. Every temptation is an opportunity to do good. There is always a way out. There are no shortcuts to maturity. Service is not optional. I was shaped for serving God. Nobody else can be me. God deserves my best. I serve God by serving others. To be a servant, I must think like a servant. God works best when I admit my weakness. I was made for a mission. God wants to say something to the world through me. The Great Commission is my commission. Blessed are the balanced. Living with purpose is the only way to really live. -------------- |

95 | Can the Bible be taken literally? | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 86702
I suggest "Biblical Hermeneutics: A comprehensive introduction to interpreting scripture", 2nd ed. by Corley, Lemke and Lovejoy This is a scholarly treatment and quite demanding, but worth the effort. A simpler approach is this: suggest that your brother read the bible on its own terms, i.e. accepting that it is the word of God because that's what it's authors intend. Then, simply go with that idea and see where it leads, reading without prejudice. If, after reading it fairly, he is not convinced, he can always go back to his previous opinion. I suggest he start with the NT. Also, I recommend The Message, Eugene Peterson's paraphrase because it integrates text with interpretive commentary so the reader need only read it naturally to get the point. It seems that at this point, your brother needs milk, not meat. Parable |

With all due respect to Hank's opinion, which is noted with the most serious mind, I submit that the modern dictionary definition is not necessarily biblical. Nowhere in the bible is the term "sodomy" defined with anything like the same level of detail given by Mr. Webster. Peace, Parable |

97 | Adult Question young people please do no | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 89391
You capably defend the faith with gentleness and respect, and for this I thank you. If I may respond in kind... To your statement "the Bible does not attempt to catalog in detail every sin and aberration of which man is capable..." I offer "the Bible does not attempt to catalog in detail every good work and loving act of which man is capable..." And to your "but one is hard pressed to justify biblically....any other sexual act except the act of coitus which God has made clear that He both sanctions and encourages, but which He has expressly reserved for the marriage bed" I offer "...one is hard pressed to condemn biblically, any sex act other than those He has explicitly condemned, except those which violate the law of Christ, i.e. the law of love." My point is, the Bible does not explicity condemn nor condone oral sex in the marriage bed. Hence, arguments for condemnation may be equally countered with arguments for acceptance. For example, if coitus is the only permissible conduct, then all conduct other than penetration via intercourse is prohibited. Is this really what the bible teaches? |
||||||
98 | Adult Question young people please do no | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 89405
Of course, I was referring to sexual conduct, not conduct in general. I apologize for not being more clear. The issue for me is not "where do WE draw the line" or "how far do WE dare lower the bar" but rather, "where does Scripture draw the line" and "where does Scripture place the bar?" We must be vigilant against reading into Scripture what we'd like to find. We can rationalize anything, including and most especially our own agendas, values, and prejudices, be they puritanical or hedonist. I think we agree that marriage is holy because it is a covenant between a man, a woman and God. While marriage also has a social function, i.e. recognition by the community, according to Scripture, it is not primarily a social institution. Thus, conduct in marriage is a matter for the three participants to decide, not society. The limits on conduct commanded by Christ are clear, love each other. |
