'In the news: She has been dubbed the "fairy godmother of the word-faith movement" and "the mistress of mail-order madness," by the Texas-based Christian Sentinel, a ministry that monitors what it calls "religious deception." Hickey got the "mistress" name for her use of trinkets - blessed cornmeal, cloths, seeds and coins - sent out to followers to urge them to send in money. The home includes a dock, spa, pool and gazebo. 'In the news: Howard-Browne has called himself the "bartender of holy laughter." Holy laughter was a controversial movement that swept evangelical circles in the mid-1990s. He would walk on stage laughing uncontrollably. The congregation would begin laughing. Howard-Browne would sweep his arm toward the crowd. People would appear "drunk on the Holy Spirit" and slide out of their chairs or dance in the aisles.' ____________________ St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 11/18/2003 (http://www.stltoday.com/) matt2411 |

82 | Who are "the elect"? | Gal 3:29 | kalos | 182645
Ebrain, I know what you mean and I agree. I'm not saying that a lesser respect for the NT is a standard teaching of Messianic believers. It's just that this particular Messianic believer, the one I'm talking about, does seem to regard the NT as inferior to the Old. For one thing, this person believes the NT was originally written in Hebrew, then translated into Greek. And that in the translation from Hebrew to Greek, much of the original meaning was lost. Again, not all Messianic believers hold to this, but some do. I appreciate your replies and your recommendation of ariel.org and moriel.org. I'll look into them. Grace to you, John |

83 | Isaiah 45:7 "God created evil"? | Is 45:7 | kalos | 182639
Machaira, Good point and well put. It is said that Scripture is its own best commentary. It is also true that sometimes the best commentary is a good translation, as you have demonstrated here. Along with the English Standard Version, which you quoted, 'the New American Standard Bible gives the sense of Isaiah 45:6-7 more clearly: "There is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, the One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these." In other words, God devises calamity as a judgment for the wicked. But in no sense is He the author of evil' ((www.gty.org). Ebrain, I agree with you, but the problem with this particular individual is that if one reads primarily the OT and regards the NT as somehow inferior to the Old, then he would give little weight to NT proof texts. Grace to you, John |

85 | "Sin is not itself a thing created." | Is 45:7 | kalos | 182635
"Sin is not itself a thing created." "It is helpful, I think, to understand that sin is not itself a thing created. Sin is neither substance, being, spirit, nor matter. So it is technically not proper to think of sin as something that was created." ____________________ "If God is sovereign, does that make Him responsible for evil? "No. Scripture says that when God finished His creation, He saw everything and declared it "very good" (Genesis 1:31). Many Scriptures affirm that God is not the author of evil: "God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone" (James 1:13). "God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). "God is not the author of confusion" (1 Corinthians 14:33)--and if that is true, He cannot in any way be the author of evil. ____________________ "...in no sense is He [God] the author of evil. "Evil originates not from God but from the fallen creature." ____________________ "Occasionally someone will quote Isaiah 45:7 (KJV) and claim it proves God made evil as a part of His creation: "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things". "But the New American Standard Bible gives the sense of Isaiah 45:6-7 more clearly: "There is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, the One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these." In other words, God devises calamity as a judgment for the wicked. But in no sense is He the author of evil. "Evil originates not from God but from the fallen creature. I agree with John Calvin, who wrote, "'. . . the Lord had declared that "everything that he had made . . . was exceedingly good" [Gen. 1:31]. Whence, then comes this wickedness to man, that he should fall away from his God? Lest we should think it comes from creation, God had put His stamp of approval on what had come forth from himself. By his own evil intention, then, man corrupted the pure nature he had received from the Lord; and by his fall drew all his posterity with him into destruction. Accordingly, we should contemplate the evident cause of condemnation in the corrupt nature of humanity--which is closer to us--rather than seek a hidden and utterly incomprehensible cause in God's predestination. [Institutes, 3:23:8]' ____________________ "...sin is not itself a thing created." ____________________ "It is helpful, I think, to understand that sin is not itself a thing created. Sin is neither substance, being, spirit, nor matter. So it is technically not proper to think of sin as something that was created. Sin is simply a want of moral perfection in a fallen creature. Fallen creatures themselves bear full responsibility for their sin. And all evil in the universe emanates from the sins of fallen creatures. "For example, Romans 5:12 says that death entered the world because of sin. Death, pain, disease, stress, exhaustion, calamity, and all the bad things that happen came as a result of the entrance of sin into the universe (see Genesis 3:14-24). All those evil effects of sin continue to work in the world and will be with us as long as sin is. "First Corinthians 10:13 promises us that God will not permit a greater trial than we can bear. And James 1:13 tells us that God will not tempt us with evil. ____________________ "God is certainly sovereign over evil. . . . But God's role with regard to evil is never as its author." ____________________ "God is certainly sovereign over evil. There's a sense in which it is proper even to say that evil is part of His eternal decree. He planned for it. It did not take Him by surprise. It is not an interruption of His eternal plan. He declared the end from the beginning, and He is still working all things for His good pleasure (Isaiah 46:9-10). "But God's role with regard to evil is never as its author. He simply permits evil agents to work, then overrules evil for His own wise and holy ends. Ultimately He is able to make all things--including all the fruits of all the evil of all time--work together for a greater good (Romans 8:28)" (www.gty.org). ____________________ For further study: Jay Adams, The Grand Demonstration (Santa Barbara CA: Eastgate,1991). 87 | "one hundred and twenty years" | Gen 6:3 | kalos | 182619
Genesis 6:3 does not say man's days are limited to 120 years. This is what it says: Genesis 6:3 NET BIBLE So the Lord said, “My spirit will not remain in mankind indefinitely since they are mortal. They will remain for one hundred and twenty more years.”[11] 11 Translators' Note. Heb “his days will be one hundred and twenty years.” Some interpret this to mean that the age expectancy of people from this point on would be one hundred twenty, but neither the subsequent narrative nor reality favors this. It is more likely that this refers to the time remaining between this announcement of judgment and the coming of the flood. (www.bible.org/netbible/index.htm ) As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, Or if due to strength, eighty years, (NASB Psalm 90:10a) |

88 | which is more correct desription ? | Is 53:1 | kalos | 182530
Hank, I agree with your recommendations for the best Bible translations, including the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB). In my opinion the HCSB is an excellent and trustworthy translation. It has been said of it that it is more readable than the NASB and more literal than the NIV. In the HCSB where the literal translation is not in the text itself, it is usually in the footnotes, giving the reader the best of both worlds (in my opinion). Also, I believe the alleged lack of clarity (the "unreadability") , woodenness, awkwardness and unsuitability for public reading of the New American Standard Bible has been GREATLY exaggerated. It is much ado about nothing. 91 | don't just listen to gods word but do | James 1:22 | kalos | 182388
By faith alone or by faith plus works? 'Question: "Is salvation by faith alone, or by faith plus works?" 'Answer: This is perhaps the most important question in all of Christian theology. This question is the cause of the Reformation - the split between the Protestant church and Catholic church. This question is a key difference between Biblical Christianity and most of the "Christian" cults. Is salvation by faith alone, or by faith plus works? Am I saved just by believing in Jesus, or do I have to believe in Jesus and do certain things? 'The question of faith alone or faith plus works is made difficult by some hard to reconcile Bible passages. Compare Romans 3:28, 5:1 and Galatians 3:24 with James 2:24. Some see a difference between Paul (salvation is by faith alone) and James (salvation is by faith plus works). In reality, Paul and James did not disagree at all. The only point of disagreement some people claim is over the relationship between faith and works. Paul dogmatically says that justification is by faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9) while James appears to be saying that justification is by faith plus works. This apparent problem is answered by examining what exactly James is talking about. James is refuting the belief that a person can have faith without producing any good works (James 2:17-18). James is emphasizing the point that genuine faith in Christ will produce a changed life and good works (James 2:20-26). James is not saying that justification is by faith plus works, but rather that a person who is truly justified by faith will have good works in his life. If a person claims to be a believer, but has no good works in his life – then he likely does not have genuine faith in Christ (James 2:14, 17, 20, 26). 'Paul says the same thing in his writings. The good fruit believers should have in their life is listed in Galatians 5:22-23. Immediately after telling us that we are saved by faith, not works (Ephesians 2:8-9), Paul informs us that we were created to do good works (Ephesians 2:10). Paul expects just as much of a changed life as James does, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17)! James and Paul do not disagree on their teaching on salvation. They approach the same subject from different perspectives. Paul simply emphasized that justification is by faith alone while James put emphasis on the fact that faith in Christ produces good works.' ____________________ www.gotquestions.org/salvation-faith-alone.html |

93 | "Not length, but strength" | Matt 14:30 | kalos | 182357
Beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. - Matthew 14:30 "Short prayers are long enough. There were but three words in the petition which Peter gasped out, but they were sufficient for his purpose. Not length but strength is desirable. A sense of need is a mighty teacher of brevity. If our prayers had less of the tail feathers of pride and more wing they would be all the better. Verbiage is to devotion as chaff to the wheat. Precious things lie in small compass, and all that is real prayer in many a long address might have been uttered in a petition as short as that of Peter." --Charles Spurgeon But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. Matthew 6:7-8 |

97 | Men had multiple wives in the old test. | Matt 19:5 | kalos | 182204
Why did God allow polygamy/bigamy? You're stumped? I'm the one who is stumped. Frankly, I don't understand why you ask a question, seemingly ignore the answer(s) you are given by not even discussing them, and then ask the same question again. You don't understand when and why this shift from polygamy (OT) to monogamy (NT) occured? 'Why did it change? It is not as much God disallowing something He previously allowed as it is God restoring marriage to His original intent. According to Genesis 2:24, polygamy was not God’s original intent. God seems to have allowed polygamy to solve a problem…but it was God’s desire for the problem never to have occurred. In most modern societies, there is absolutely no need for polygamy. In most cultures today, women are able to provide for and protect themselves – removing the only “positive” aspect of polygamy. Are there some instances in which the allowance for polygamy would still apply today? Perhaps…but it is unfathomable that there would be no other possible solution. It is our firm belief that polygamy does not honor the intent and sanctity of marriage – and most importantly – does not honor God.' (www.gotquestions.org/polygamy.html) You don't see anything in the OT that condemns polygamy? Question: Why did God allow polygamy/bigamy in the Bible? ____________________ “We see in Deuteronomy 17:14-20, that the kings were not supposed to multiply wives. This most definitely puts Solomon in direct disobedience against the Lord.” ____________________ 'Answer: The first instance of polygamy / bigamy in the Bible was Lamech in Genesis 4:19, “Lamech married two women…” Several prominent men in the Old Testament were polygamists. Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, and others all had multiple wives. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines (essentially wives of a lower status) according to 1 Kings 11:3. What are we to do with these instances of polygamy in the Old Testament? There are three questions that need to be answered. (1) Why did God allow polygamy in the Old Testament? (2) How does God view polygamy today?... '(1) Why did God allow polygamy in the Old Testament? The Bible does not specifically say why God allowed polygamy… '(2) How does God view polygamy today? The Bible says that God’s original intention was for one man to be married to only one woman, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife (not wives); and they shall become one flesh (not multiple fleshes)” (Genesis 2:24). We see in Deuteronomy 17:14-20, that the kings were not supposed to multiply wives. This most definitely puts Solomon in direct disobedience against the Lord. 'In the New Testament, 1 Timothy 3:2, 12 and Titus 1:6 give “the husband of one wife” in a list of qualifications for spiritual leadership. While these qualifications are only specifically for positions of spiritual leadership, they apply equally to all Christians. Should not all Christians be “above reproach...temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money” (1 Timothy 3:2-4)? If we are called to be holy (1 Peter 1:16), and if these standards are holy for elders and deacons, then they are holy for all. Ephesians 5:22-33, speaking of the relationship between husbands and wives, when referring to a husband (singular) always also refers to a wife (singular). “…for the husband is the head of the wife (singular) … He who loves his wife (singular) loves himself. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife (singular), and the two will become one flesh … each one of you also must love his wife (singular) as he loves himself, and the wife (singular) must respect her husband.” There is absolutely no allowance for polygamy for followers of Jesus Christ. If any food was available outside the ark, the raven could survive. In contrast, a dove is much more selective in its food choices.
