81 | We only get what we can handle? | 1 Cor 10:13 | Timothy Paul | 60621
Dear canham00, a verse like this is best read in context, as within the entire chapter, or at least the verse preceding and following. vs. 12 says,"So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!" Here is what my favorite commentator Matthew Henry) says about that verse, "He who thinks he stands is not likely to keep his footing, if he fears no fall, nor guards against it. God has not promised to keep us from falling, if we do not look to ourselves: his protection supposes our own care and caution." And the following two verses (vss 14,15)read, "Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say." "Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear." (Mat 13:43) Welcome to this forum, Peace and blessings, Tim |

82 | John16:5-15 | 1 Cor 14:24 | Timothy Paul | 77817
Hi Sweet, It is well that you put this verse "in context" for it is the Spirit that makes us conscious of sin, righteousness, and judgment. I do not think that the Almighty Father is capable of pronouncing false judgement, do you? He does however exactly as He pleases in order to accomplish His purpose. Therefore, Jesus was made to be what we were (sin), in order that we may become what He was(righteousness). My studies tell me that the only sin that will condemn us is the sin of rejecting Christ. Since all sin begins in unbelief, the most aggravated form of unbelief is the rejection of Christ. The Spirit, however, in planting this truth into the conscience, intensifies the sense of all other sins. Jesus is the only righteousness God will accept. In order to be righteous we must believe on Jesus. Christ had to leave, so that the Spirit could come. The Spirit was the fruit of the work that Christ did on earth. The Spirit was sent to earth on a most holy errand, to convince the world of sin. This means to shed light on, or to bring the world out of its present darkness. The Spirit is also called the comforter. First to convince, and then to comfort. Such as exposing the wound so that the medication could be applied. God Bless, I hope you are understanding me correctly, (o: Tim |

83 | Does "the kingdom" end before "forever"? | 1 Cor 15:24 | Timothy Paul | 65680
P.A. Van B., nice question, but I think the kingdom that is referred to as not lasting forever might possibly be the Mediatorial kingdom? Where Christ is the Mediator between man and God, because He is both in fact, man and God. This will come to an end, but the Kingdom of God will not, as testified to in the following verses: 2 Samuel 7:13; He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. Psalm 45:6; Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. Psalm 16:11; You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Daniel 4:3; How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders! His kingdom is an eternal kingdom; his dominion endures from generation to generation. Luke 1:33; and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." |

84 | In simplicity and sincerity of God? | 2 Cor 1:12 | Timothy Paul | 57945
Hi Ray, Good to hear from you. Your questions are provoking as well as enlightening, however I must disagree with your stand on capitalization on this issue. This is because I feel that the word 'godly' is used as an adjective, describing the sincerity of the apostle Paul,( He was not a man who seemed to be one thing and was another, but a man of sincerity.) and does not concern this conversation with the sincerity of God Himself, who is completely genuine without fail. As to the phrase 'godly jealousy' I am prompted to ask, Could there BE such a thing? I was taught, albeit recently, to be zealous, not jealous. Man's jealousy I consider a sin along with envy and covetousness, for it means not wanting the very best for our brethren, or feeling that we are more deserving of what they have than they themselves are. Looking at it thusly, is anyone more deserving of ANY blessings in life? (We already enjoy much more than we can ever earn or deserve). This could place 'godly sorrow' under the same scrutiny. Now to 'godly'jealousy, I am moved to my favorite Webster's dictionary, that defines godly as something of or from God (cap). This means if it is from God, He no longer is in possession or control, but by divine permission has given control of this emotion over to His blessed servant Paul, to wield in the exercise of God's Will, ie, the propagation of the church. Are you with me so far on this, Brother Ray? Be blessed and be a blessing! Tim |

85 | Why is fruit singular and not plural? | Galatians | Timothy Paul | 50964
Good Question, Great answers. I would add that if it were plural, it would suggest that we could pick and choose between the 'fruits' of the Spirit, which we are unable to do. Faithfully, Tim |

86 | Politics in NT times? | Eph 5:3 | Timothy Paul | 60490
Hello billk, No, I do not believe it is a lack of faith to show curiosity, but I do believe it is dangerous to speculate about questions such as this. For instance, you ask about powerplays, what would an answer to this imply? That they were selfish, or greedy? Or they were simply human and possessed many traits that are prevalent today? My feeling is that, when the Bible was divinely inspired to man (2Tim 3:16), that God gave us exactly what His infinite wisdom showed that we needed to know, no more, and no less. Peace, Tim |

87 | Freewill offerings of the mouth? | Eph 5:8 | Timothy Paul | 66495
Hi Ray, It is always a pleasure to receive a Heartfelt Posting from your desk (o: To answer your question, "what could be thought of..." I would like to refer you to some explication on God's Word From my favorite commentator, Matthew Henry, who tells us, concerning Psa 119:108, "Two things we are here taught to pray for, in reference to our religious performances: 1.) Acceptance of them. This we must aim at in all we do in religion, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of the Lord. What David here earnestly prays for the acceptance of are the free-will-offerings, not of his purse, but of his mouth, his prayers and praises. The calves of our lips (Hos. 14:2), the fruit of our lips (Heb. 1:15), these are the spiritual offerings which all Christians, as spiritual priests, must offer to God; and they must be free-will-offerings, for we must offer them abundantly and cheerfully, and it is this willing mind that is accepted. The more there is of freeness and willingness in the service of God the more pleasing it is to him. 2.) Assistance in them: Teach me thy judgments. We cannot offer any thing to God which we have reason to think he will accept of, but what he is pleased to instruct us in the doing of; and we must be as earnest for the grace of God in us as for the favour of God towards us." -Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Entire Bible Peace and Charis, Tim |

88 | sex? | Phil 4:6 | Timothy Paul | 65174
No, my young friend I would say not, (the sex is not necessarily bad, but the anxiety may be)For to have too much anxiety in our lives is showing God that we do not trust His will for our lives, and we make ourselves out to be unfit for His service. However it is human nature and perfectly natural to have these feelings. And since God created us, He knows exactly what we are made of and how we feel about everything. So, sexuality is a natural, God-given desire. God, in His infinite wisdom, gave us the gift of sex and designed it to be a wholesome aspect of a marriage relationship as a means to populate the earth. So God should always be our guide in the use of this unique and wonderful gift. We all are aware that sexual temptations are hard to ignore and difficult to overcome, since they are part of the normal desires of our flesh.Remember, these feelings were given to us by God. Sex was created by God to populate the earth and He made it a pleasurable way to express the love between a husband and wife. But! sex must be limited to the marriage relationship to avoid hurting ourself, our relationship with others, and most important, our relationship with God. Real lasting happiness can only come when we decide to trust in God completely and develop patience as we wait for His plan to unfold in our lives. The real danger here would be to doubt that God knows us, loves us, and wants what is best for us. Then, we may resent His plan and timing, and carelessly pursue sexual activity without His blessing. Remain Strong, and know that He is Lord. Peace, tim |

89 | Which kinds of suffering? | Col 1:24 | Timothy Paul | 44975

90 | So, not ALL suffering is included? | Col 1:24 | Timothy Paul | 44980
Cheryl, i don't think that suffering for the sake of it is included, but some kinds of unrelated suffering such as a thorn in one's side could possibly be spiritually advantageous incidentally, here is a note from the disciple's study bible: COLOSSIANS 1:24Evil and Suffering, Rejoicing—Christ’s suffering adequately atoned for sin. The church continues to suffer so all the world may know of and benefit from Christ’s atonement. Christians must continue the ministry and, therefore, the suffering of Jesus until He returns. Knowing the ultimate purpose of our suffering allows us to rejoice in it. We do not suffer for ourselves or for some mysterious evil force we do not understand. We suffer for Christ and His church. |

91 | What about abusive marriage? | Col 1:24 | Timothy Paul | 45087
Cheryl May God Bless You for sharing your spirituality with us, and for making me, an infant in Christ feel welcome on this splendid site. My feelings are that we should always cater to our spouse, children, authorities, unless it conflicts with the will of God. That is, the Mosaic Law, and Christ's Teachings. does an abusive husband fit? I am against divorce too, and you are very blessed for your endurance in a painful situation. But I feel if you are not taking proper steps in turning this violence over to the authorities then you are allowing it and not doing the right thing. I do not know the whole situation so forgive me if i am wrong. I understand it's much more complicated than what you have put out for all eyes to read, bless you for that as well. Now,the Holy Spirit will rush to your rescue only if you do not have blockades against it. this includes the three areas of a Christian's life that are acceptable, your body, your spirit, and your estate. I would suggest, to gain help from above, that you seek it through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. In the grip of His Grace. Tim |

93 | Tell me ur view on modalistic monarchian | 2 Tim 2:15 | Timothy Paul | 53436
Dear Brother Roller, Our Great and Gracious LORD tells us in Leviticus 11:45,"I am the Lord who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy." This,(to me) includes accepting these "MMs" as a "lost person" who does not rightly interpret the Word of God. As a baby Christian myself, I would suggest you turn to 2Tim 2:15,(above)and find the truth in the scriptures. 2Tim 3:16,17 says a lot: All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. Now, the scriptures I refer to tell us that one God has existed from historical eternity in three persons, known as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Father is God: Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. (John 6:27) The Son is God: For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (2Pet 1:17) And the Spirit is God: God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. (Acts 2:32,33) this is what I think.Thank You for your interesting question. peace, Tim |

94 | why blood for sin-offering? | Heb 9:22 | Timothy Paul | 59374
turtlesrcool; Let me share some insight that was related to me by no one special, just someone I respect. In the Old Testament a man was to be circumsized to enter into the covenant w/ God. This was the shedding of blood. (Thank you for Heb 9:22 above) When Jesus was killed on the cross, The Sinless died for the Sinful. He endured the most shameful execution, committing the Ultimate Sacrifice. There is nothing that is not covered under this sacrifice, the sacrifice to end all sacrifice. Nothing can ever be added to this sacrifice, since God paid the highest possible price when He gave His only Son. To attempt to add anything at all to this conclusion is to say that something was left undone, that Jesus' sacrifice was incomplete, that we are so good that the act is incomplete without our input. so now, in New Testament times, the circumcision of the male's foreskin is more a matter of personal hygiene than anything else. there is no more call for the shedding of blood. the circumcision that is called for today is the circumcision of the spirit, but that is a whole new topic w/ a new ID# peace and grace, tim |

95 | faith and believe are they the same? | Heb 11:1 | Timothy Paul | 48772
Hi jaytee. By the grace of God (praise Him), I just got back from Church, where the pastor explained the difference during his sermon. Pastor Paul told of a group of kids swimming, and a larger boy was catching smaller children in his arms as they jumped off a ledge into the water. One boy was afraid to jump into the arms of this boy,He believed the boy would catch him, but he lacked faith. But when his father was in the water with his arms outstretched, the boy jumped right in. The pastor continued saying that there are many who believe in God and believe what the Bible says, yet they lack the faith to take the plunge, which is what Christ is calling us to do. It is not easy to take the leap, for it requires great faith. By His Grace, Tim P.S. My humble apologies to Pastor Paul for butchering his sermon so. |

96 | Does Jesus dispise manmade crosses? | Heb 12:2 | Timothy Paul | 60513
Good answer, Emmaus. My thoughts are that God does not hate inanimate objects, but the sin that is produced when the object is used for an unholy purpose. A cross is a tree, formed into a structure by man. Who is the despicable one here? |

97 | Should We Get Married Again? | Heb 13:4 | Timothy Paul | 55473
Hi A B and welcome :o) It is terribly sad that the enemy succeeded in tearing apart your marriage after such a long time together. Ecc 4:12 relates, "And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken" (The third member in the cord of course is Jesus). While God hates divorce(Mal 2:16), He still loves the divorced. The reason that I feel He hates divorce is because of the sin that we are tempted into committing after the seperation. -okay, ONE of the reasons anyway. I hope your daughter is well and feel bad that it took a tragedy to draw you two to consider reconciliation. If your husband refuses to do devotions w/you, you should respect his feelings and give it time for his reasons to surface. After all, do you want him to do this w/you unwillingly? Matt. 6:6, "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." Being a divorced addict, I can sympathize w/your dilemna. After being saved and teaching my ex about the biblical view of divorce, she accepted a ring from me but that did not last either. This time I feel her pride kept her from respecting me enough to accept my past failures, but that would only be a part of it so I won't give you a one sided story. It is well that you two go to church together so for now I would suggest you trust in Jesus to send you the Counsel of the Holy Spirit, remember the fruit of the Spirit (Eph. 5:9; Gal. 5:22, -notice the word fruit is singular, not plural) Also, memorize (and try your best to practice 1Cor 13:4-5): "4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. I sincerely hope I have given some useful biblical advice here, there is lots more where that came from. Bless God and God bless. Tim |

99 | any thought s on this | 1 Pet 3:19 | Timothy Paul | 56095
Hi Christian7, thanks for the interesting question. You are able to do a 'quick search'and enter ID# 24390 to see an excellent response by Tim Moran, as brother Tim points out, this may very well lead to more questions than answers. This leads me to search favorite commentaries, and to quote David Guzic, he says, a. Apparently, this work was done in the period after Jesus' death, but before His first appearance as resurrected to the disciples; Jesus went to Hades - the abode of the dead - and preached to the spirits there b. Are these spirits demonic spirits or human spirits? Their disobedience was in the days of Noah; we have evidence that this was a time of gross sin for both demons and humans, when there was an ungodly co-mingling of humans and demons (Genesis 6:1-2) c. Why would Jesus preach to these imprisoned spirits? In all probability, this was preaching (the proclamation of God's message) but not evangelism (the proclamation of good news); Jesus probably preached judgment to these disobedient spirits d. Some feel that this preaching was done by Jesus to the people of Noah's time, in Noah's time; when Peter refers to their imprisonment, he refers to their current state, not their state when Jesus preached to them - preaching through Noah (or Enoch) i. "This passage, once cleared of misunderstanding, should also function today as an encouragement to us to be bold in our witness (as Noah was), to be confident that, though we may be few, God will certainly save us (as he did Noah), and to remind us that just as certainly as the flood eventually came, so final judgment will certainly come to our world as well, and Christ will ultimately triumph over all evil in the universe." (Grudem) I hope this has what you were looking for, God Bless, Tim |

100 | any thought s on this | 1 Pet 3:19 | Timothy Paul | 56122
christian7, more thoughts on the verse from Peter, whose name comes from 'petra' and means stone, Peter refers to Christ as the 'Living stone'(1Pe 2:4) and we, vs.5, are like living stones. God sent His Son as the cornerstone in the spiritual temple that is being built to this day. Jesus is the foundation, support and underpinning of the church, and is the most critical piece of the structure. This cornerstone posseses invincible strength and everlasting duration and we are able to rely on Him for protection and security. We are also capable of using this stone as a weapon against the enemy. My point here is, instead of trying to establish who the spirits were that Jesus went to preach to, we should be compelled towards discovering the message that was preached to these souls. This message likely had much to do with how we are inclined to follow the majority, yet we are commanded otherwise. Just think of the 8 that were saved in the ark, who received everlasting life, and the 8 million who perished and received eternal damnation. Thank you for your time in sharing these thoughts, may God Bless all of you and all of yours. |
