81 | Huge Impact? | Romans | charis | 21992
Dear Joe! Greetings in Jesus' name! Guilty of some (but I hope not all! :-)) of the above! No theological training, non-confessional, and I can't read Aramaic. As an illiterate, I humbly ask you what the 'huge impact on the conduct, assurance, and evangelism of believers' is? Please use little words :-) Bless you, my brother, in Christ Jesus, charis |

82 | SAFE? | Romans | charis | 21781
Dear Hank, Greetings in the name of Jesus! Do you call the 'middle ground' of this issue SAFE? :-) You've got to be kidding! This is probably one of the more dangerous (courageous!) stands I have taken. But I think I would rather stay where I am, buffeting and all, than go with one of the 'mainstream' contradictory sides. It seems to me that the narrow gate, narrow path is better than the broad avenues on either side! :-) Blessings, my friend, in Christ Jesus, charis |

90 | FATHER fixation? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 18573
Dear casiv, I have been reading this thread, and do not quite get the focus of attention you are putting on the FATHER. I well understand that all things were created by God the Father, but now we live in a age when the fulness of the triune God has been made evident. Furthermore: 'And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth."' Matthew 28:18 NASB. Also: "...when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed--for our testimony to you was believed. To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ." 2 Thessalonians 1:10-12 NASB. Presently, our salvation and glorification rests in the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. He has been given all authority. I suspect that emotionally dwelling on the first Person of the Godhead feels good, but we cannot neglect the spiritual reality that the author and perfecter of our faith is the Lord Jesus. So... "...fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:2 NASB If we are going to fix our eyes on a single Person of the Godhead, should it not be Jesus? Bless you, my friend, in Christ Jesus, charis |

91 | Christian Primer Terms? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 18115
Dear Saints and fellows, Again I ask for help in creating a primer for new Christians and those 'on the brink.' The first class will be Christian-Bible terminology. I would like to give basic definitions pertinent to starting a life in Christ Jesus. Please rememeber that I am living in a country with less than 1 percent Christian population (Japan), and very little knowledge of things many would take for granted. A few terms I would like to bring up are: God, Holy Spirit, Trinity, Messiah-Christ, heaven, hell, salvation, justification, redemption, Bible-Old Testament-New Testament, prophecy, ministry, faith, baptism...etc. Please give me a definition of one or more of the above, with a clear Bible reference (Not too many!) Let me know what you might want to add to the above list. Please, do not 'wax poetic' or philosophize. Also, don't refer me to another book or web-site...tell me what YOU think. Be brief; I want to give a list of basic definitions, explain the basics, then have some free discussion, all in about 90 minutes. Think what is most important to you. Thank you all for you help. I plan on publishing the course outline on my homepage as an 'open source.' I pray that it will be a blessing to many in non-Christian nations, and maybe in some so-called 'Christian nations' as well. Blessing to all in Christ Jesus, charis |

92 | Definitions - God? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 17143
Please define God. I am putting together a primer for Life in Christ Jesus. As some of you know, I serve the Lord in Japan, and need your input. Remember, don't take for granted that all people know everything about Christianity (like Americans :-)) I will be asking for other definitions in the future. Please help me to think of other things that should be defined in order to understand Life in Christ Jesus for those who do not live in 'Christian' countries. Also, though I would appreciate 'simple' Scriptures to help in the definition, know that Scripture *alone* is not understood by a good portion of the world. Use commonly understood terms and concepts, and common sense. Many thanks and blessings in Christ Jesus, charis |

93 | 'Conscientious Objection' Biblical? | Ex 20:13 | charis | 16073
Dear saints of the Forum, This is the promised new thread. Webster's - 'the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought.' Does the Bible speak of 'conscientious objection' toward capital punishment? Fellows, please be consistent! Capital punishment is NOT murder by any interpretation of Scripure, while abortion and euthenasia are! You are speaking of your own 'conscientious objection' toward taking another life. As has been made so glaringly evident thes past few days, crime is war against humanity. Your argument is that once we have caught and disarmed a proven, admitted murderer, he is helpless, and no longer culpable of his crime. A moment before, when he had a weapon in his hand, we can shoot him, but now... I find this very inconsistent. The human rights of the victim are equal to those of the criminal. Blessings and peace. 95 | Holy or holier? | Matt 15:9 | charis | 14392
Dear Steve-san, Konbanwa, and almost Oyasumi-nasai for me. These are indeed good references, but the question is, holier? If so, holier than who(m)? You and I are considered holy, and exhorted to become holy. So are 'officials' in the church holier? History and personal experience tell me not. Paul did not seem to think so, either. Shu Iesu Kirisuto no shukufuku ga arimasu yo ni! (Blessings in Christ Jesus!) charis |

96 | What in the Word is an 'office?' | Matt 15:9 | charis | 14382
Dear saints, I have been trying to understand the concept of 'office,' and can find no reference in the Bible except this one. A minister is not an administrator, an officer, or an 'hireling,' but a servant of the Lord and His people. As this is a study of the Word of God, please stay away from tradition or extra-Biblical sources. (In other words, no selective quotes. Though others might be more eloquent than you, it is your opinion I seek) Blessings one and all, in Christ Jesus, charis |

97 | Prerequisite-infallibility? | 1 Cor 12:27 | charis | 12500
Dear Tim, Nolan, and saints, I have asked this question before, but here goes. If the 'office' of apostle and prophet are no longer active, why do we still have the 'office' of pastor, evangelist, teacher? It is late, so my mind may not be so sharp...but where in the Bible does it say that the prerequisite for apostles and prophets is that they must provide *new* revelation? For that matter, where in the Bible is the prerequisite that these ministers must be infallible? Not all apostles and prophets wrotes books of the Bible. (Thomas, Philip, Bartholomew, etc.) Some of the saints that did write books were not identified as apostles or prophets. (Dr. Luke, John Mark, Jude) None of them were infallible. So why must a present-day minister be made to fulfil these requirements? Martin Luther showed a *new thing* to the church, something called 'grace.' Somtimes things are called *new* after they have been lost for a while. Apparently, the church has lost quite a few things, and the ministerial gifts are there to help find them. I am not sure that I understand 'not offices, but gifts.' This is too complicated to be of God, IMHO. I must say that it sounds as if 'church-planters,' missionaries, and appliers of God's Word are SCC (second class citizens) Why must we give so much glory to men who were simply obedient to God, and deny bona fide status to present-day ministers doing the same thing? With all due respect, this sounds like beatification to me. I look forward to answers. In Christ Jesus, charis |

98 | Jesus tears down the gates of hell? | Eph 4:8 | charis | 12345
Dear saints, Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus tore down the gates of hell? "Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men." Ephesians 4:8 NASB. and "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Matthew 16:18 seem to describe this event, but... Is there a clear Scripture? In Christ Jesus, charis |

99 | Denominations, why? | Phil 1:1 | charis | 7565
Dear Saints, Define the local church (the Biblical ideal), explaining why we have the denominational (divisive) system in it's place. Frankly, I am disappointed that not one person tried to explain the plight the church is in today! The odds are that most of you are part of a denomination. So... tell me why? The other day I posted: A local church is a 'mutually committed expression of the body of Christ in a specific locality.' A family of believers that have bound themselves together before God, dedicated to showing forth Jesus to their neighborhood. In the early church, these were usually gathering in a saint's house. "how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house," Acts 20:20 NASB "also greet the church that is in their house. Greet Epaenetus, my beloved, who is the first convert to Christ from Asia." Romans 16:5 NASB "The churches of Asia greet you. Aquila and Prisca greet you heartily in the Lord, with the church that is in their house." 1 Corinthians 16:19 NASB "and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:" Philemon 1:2 NASB Another aspect is that there should be fellowship, as in the sharing of lives, with our homes open to eachother. This implies a commitment to one another beyond *membership.* "And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts 2:42 NASB Finally, I can find no reference in the Bible to connecting one local church to another in any form of organization. The thought of 'strength in numbers' is never spoken, nor is the binding of any local body to another for denominational (divisional) identity ever portrayed. The absence of any encouragement to 'make a name for yourselves,' and the many warnings not to become like the Pharisees, Saducees, scribes, or any other 'named' grouping, leads me to believe that God never intended for their to be anything more than the local church. I would welcome anyone that can Biblically defend 'denominationalism' without claiming superior doctrine or 'strength in numbers.' (both points are moot in Jesus) Blessings to all, and blessings to the local church. In Christ Jesus, charis |
