641 | Infallibility of the Bible questioned. | 2 Tim 3:16 | charis | 32155
Dear JMHO, Greetings in the name of Jesus! I am a bit puzzled by your dissatisfaction with Hank's posts. Is that a chip on your shoulder? :-) This is a Study Bible Forum, and it is commonly considered proper among Bible-believing Christians to trust that the entire Bible is truth. We do discuss certain apsects of the Bible, but it is rather incongruous to broadly say that large portions of the Holy Scriptures are 'stories.' By the way, we DO have a method of 'doing private posts or emails.' It is called the Personal Profile, and can be entered by simply clicking on the name of the person you want to know more about. Sadly, many people (including yourself) do not want to be known or contacted, and do not post a Personal Profile. :-( Blessings in Christ Jesus, charis |

642 | The Irony of the StudyBibleForum | 2 Tim 3:16 | charis | 32162
Dear EdB, Greetings, my friend, in Jesus' name! No problem! Getting old is GREAT! "Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding." Proverbs 3:5 NASB. As senility takes its toll, there is less and less of our own understanding to lean on, so we HAVE to trust the Lord! (either that, or become a crotchety old fool, mired in past understanding! :-)) Blessings and joy in Christ Jesus, charis |

Dear Brian, Greetings in the name of Jesus! That is a very incendiary comment, my friend! :-) Considering our hosts might take serious issue with that, I think I would prefer to say that some have read 118 percent of the Bible! Blessings and peace in Christ Jesus, charis |

645 | Good-bye, NIV | 2 Tim 3:16 | charis | 32643
Dear Hank, Greetings from Yokohama in Jesus' name! I said good-bye to the NIV about 20 years ago! I felt that they had been influenced by the spirit of the age to sacrifice accuracy for 'readability.' I think that my (prophetic? :-)) feelings have been confirmed! On my 'oft-used' bookshelf over my desk, I have several translations (including 3 Japanese!), Study Bibles, and the Pulpit Commentary. In a 'more remote' bookshelf I DO have an NIV, next to the RDB (Reader's Digest Bible :-)). On a sweeter note, my daughter Naomi is sending me a copy of the ESV (with CD-ROM), and I expect to have it in a week or so. Blessings and peace in Christ Jesus, charis |

Amen to all. As to the last statement, me, too! Just ask JVH0212. In Christ Jesus.
647 | When are we 'securely' saved? | Hebrews | charis | 1209
Amen, friend! I agree with both statements. The first came from the mind, a result of study and logic. The second comes from the heart, with honesty and humility. In Jesus.
648 | Who has Eternal Insecurity? | Hebrews | charis | 1250
A true statement of faith, my brother. But (seems like I read that word a lot around here :-), unfortunately, there are a lot of people who have not yet achieved that level of faith. Many Christians I have met in the country of my calling (Japan), and many Christians I have met in the country of my birth (U.S.A.), struggle with their faith. Though 'knowledge' is imparted from the pulpit and in Bible Study, some are not as capable as you and I to apply it to their lives. Those whose faith is weak are dogged by sin, and the world around them desires to steal as much faith as possible from them. It would be easy to just say, "They are weak, maybe they are not of Jesus." But I can find no Scripture that supports my giving up on them. I believe we are to proclaim the Gospel to the lost, and to the weak (some might say 'marginal') Christian alike. It is possible that the fellowship you enjoy contains no 'doubters' or weak-of-faith, that all your brothers and sisters-in-Christ have absolute eternal security. I have met few who could claim eternal security moment-to-moment, day-to-day, for all their Christian life. Yes, I have known those who put on a good facade, but their actions betray them at times. Eternal Security is a doctrine which I believe in, a theology I study, a faith I hold dear in my heart, and a topic I speak of often. Sadly, though, it is not a reality to many. I cannot condemn those who have not yet found this gift, but only encourage them to continue their pursuit of it. It must be real to THEM, not pie-in-the-sky, or for 'others.' I guess it is my method to meet-them-where-they-are, and help them rise up. I know I was blessed by many very patient saints when I was first saved. In Jesus.
649 | Still...can WE know this? | Hebrews | charis | 1256
Dear friend, I stand corrected. You and Harper's both seem to be talking about the theory or theology of the knowledge of God, and I talked about the practical application of this knowledge or lack of it. I do understand that this is a forum for theologians and scholars, but I was writing about and to those who are laymen. Though I am a minister in a local church, I consider myself a layman. Again, I fall into the trap of applying my bent to another's. As an excuse, I can only say that my motive was to speak to all those reading these discussions, not just to you. Please forgive my lack of clarity. I did re-read the submissions, starting with "Could a believer lose their salvation?" then to "Once lost, always lost." Isn't "...is unregenerate..." kind of a statement that 'appraises salvation?' I was under the impression that you were using Hebrews 6:4-6 to express your views concerning "Once lost, always lost." If I am totally 'off the mark' in this, please forgive me. Your protagonist, not antagonist friend, in Jesus.
650 | But can WE know this? | Hebrews | charis | 1257
An 'admitted' Arminist! Welcome, my friend, to the show that never ends! Though I profess no capital 'A' or 'C' (or 'X' or 'Y' or 'Z') I do agree with your about 'sudden' damnation, in the same way I do not believe that Satan can 'snatch' us away from God. Just to add an anecdote that is (somewhat) relevant: I went to a meeting a few years ago, and the preacher said that he 'cast out several demons from himself using a mirror just prior to the meeting.' Needless to say, I did not stick around for fellowship after the meeting! Very mobile demons! Blessings in Jesus' name! |

651 | Still...can WE know this? | Hebrews | charis | 1265
My friend, my wife has been telling me for years that I sometimes (often :-) don't get my point across very well. Perhaps this forum can help me with this 'character flaw?' It indeed is a great way for me to use my mother tongue for discussion at this level. Likewise, I treasure our friendship and discussion, and looking up your submissions is always interesting. In Christ.
652 | No hope for unity of faith? | Hebrews | charis | 1408
Dear bjanko, You are right! I suppose that is my point. I cannot tell you how many times I have met people that attend one denominational church or another, but haven't a clue what the history or doctrine of the denomination might be. The sad part of this also bolsters my point, those 'uninformed' can be classified in two groups. 1) Those who don't care which denomination, they desire to be Christians, and 2) Those who are adamant regarding the righteousness of their 'group,' parroting the doctrine in total ignorance, and refusing to pursue any other thoughts. I admire the former, maybe they are the 'invisible church.' but the latter are the 'bigots' of Christianity, emotions (often negative) rule their life. I believe that church leaders are responsible to teach these 'spiritually-challenged' individuals a broader view of faith. I also believe that the leader of ANY church is called by Jesus to first teach and preach Christ, then preach their bent as 'supplementary' knowledge. Your last statement MAY be correct, but I will continue to pursue and teach the unity of the faith with hope in Christ Jesus, nevertheless. I still prefer to say it COULD happen, than it NEVER will. In Jesus' name. |

653 | But can WE know this? | Hebrews | charis | 16814
Dear dougboy, True! Isn't this known in Scripture as the blessed hope? As compared to knowledge for personal judgment or edification. "...looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus;" Titus 2:13 NASB If at all possible, I try to have blessed hope even for those that seem 'borderline' in their faith (from my viewpoint), and would wish that they return the favor. :-) In Jesus, charis |

654 | Can I trust this Pastor? | Hebrews | charis | 16936
Dear Jensen, "...not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near." Hebrews 10:25 NASB My fellow saint, in order to serve God, we have been given three gifts: 1) the Bible, 2) the Holy Spirit, and 3) the church. All of these are *absolutely necessary* for us to know and serve God! As my good brother Reformer Joe has said, the test for 2 and 3 is the Bible, but you cannot depend solely on *your* understanding of Scripture, saying it is of the Holy Spirit, and deny your responsibility to the church of Jesus Christ. We are *living stones* being fitted together to the glory of God (1 Peter 2:5 ff). I am sorry for your bad experience(s), and pray for your healing. (which, by the way, is completely available!) But you must be part of His body in order to serve Him, which IS His body. The Lord WILL lead you to a church. You must not be looking for excuses to not be comfortable. As with a natural family, there will inevitably be those who make you ashamed, those who intimidate you, and those who you do not like.(or 'mesh well together' :-)) But overall, the body of Christ is a nice family, and if you humbly apply yourself to service and love, God will make a place for you. If all else fails, pack your bags and come to Yokohama! We are not perfect, but we do fulfil all the requirements (by grace) of a church. Remember, you are not seeking a professional Pastor, but a Biblical shepherd. With this in mind and heart, continue your search. I am confident that you will find that which you seek! 655 | Can we agree? | Hebrews | charis | 18082
Dear Kelkat, Greetings in Jesus' name! I have looked at the Scriptures you have quoted. There are the 'usual Prosperity Message proofs.' My friend, these are taken so out of context, it is almost pitiful. God has promised us peace and prosperity in our hearts. Not to fulfil the desires of the flesh! "Let them shout for joy and rejoice, who favor my vindication; And let them say continually, "The LORD be magnified, Who delights in the prosperity of His servant." Psalm 35:27 NASB. The word is 'shalom,' not 'shekel.' "Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers." 3 John 2 NASB. Your soul is prospering, not your pocketbook. "The LORD will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow." Deuteronomy 28:12 NASB. This is not the World Bank, but a giving heart, and not the arrogance of mammon. "But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day." Deuteronomy 8:18 NASB. The 'wealth' is the Promised Land, a land of peace, not gold. "But I have received everything in full and have an abundance; I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus what you have sent, a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God. And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:18-19 NASB. Please! Riches in glory! Paul was not made 'independently wealthy.' And he certainly didn't put his money in CDs and live off the interest. "For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts, How blessed is the man who trusts in You!" Psalm 84:11,12 NASB. Good does NOT equal monetary value. You cannot walk uprightly with a load of money on your shoulders, nor can you pass the eye of the needle. "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows." Malachi 3:10 NASB. Again, blessing is in the heart, and proven by the fruit of the Spirit, not in the ability to buy comfort. Homes have mortgages, stocks tumble, and cars rust. What the Lord gives is eternal! "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed;" 2 Corinthians 9:8 NASB. The abundance is given for the purpose of service, not personal hoarding. Now, my Scripture reference: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:34 NASB. 'Nuff said. It's funny, IMHO, the prosperity message preaches cheap (nigh worthless) faith, and greedy grace. Do not be anxious for the things that God already gives, but seek after the fruit of the Spirit, which often comes by *divesting* yourself of mammon. I, too, have spent 15 years cleaning up the messes of the 'Prosperity Message.' Their victims are many! Few stay on for long, though! The ones that 'achieve' the goal often return to the world, and the ones that 'fail' are not 'worthy,' and are cast off. Some find a church of peace and faith, but many are so disgusted with Christianity that they walk away from the church. My two yen. In Christ Jesus, charis |

656 | Is man a 'triune' creature? | Heb 4:12 | charis | 2294
Dear JVH0212, Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this. I wish I could say that I have been studying furiously to find a good answer, but I've just been busy with other things. I do not have 'the' answer, just 'an' answer. With all due respect to John MacArthur, I disagree with his opinion on this issue. Again I cite Hebrews 4:12, and 1Thessalonians 5:23. In addition, "At night my soul longs for Thee, Indeed, my spirit within me seeks Thee diligently; For when the earth experiences Thy judgments The inhabitants of the world learn righteousness." Isaiah 26:9 NASB. I think that man is at least two parts is obvious to all. The body, that is 'of the earth,' and perishable. Then the spirit, which is the part 'in the image of God.' Then we have the soul, a capricious part, a 'switch-hitter' that seems akin to the spirit at times, and swayed by the flesh at others. It encompasses our emotions and thoughts, and is similar to other created things (animals). This is why we can 'rationalize' sin. Hebrews 4:12 would be telling us that by rightly dividing the two, we can 'pull' the soul toward God. Satan would like to allow our souls to be more affected by the flesh, so creates lies that deceive our 'unstable' portion. In answer to another question, this would mean that prior to salvation, our spirit is lost, but our spirit is 'born again' to new life in Jesus. I don't think that we are 'spirit-less,' and then given one. Rather, the spirit that was fallen by the sin of Adam, was regenerated. Though I am sure there are 'academic' problems with this scenario, it does solve many weak areas of 'pure theology.' Let me know what you think. (without 'blowing a gasket' :-) In Christ Jesus, charis |

658 | Is man a 'triune' creature? | Heb 4:12 | charis | 2310
Dear inhzsvc, Because we cannot 'know' until we meet Him, we can only believe. Even the best of Bible scholars have no recourse but to say, "I believe," or "I think" on many issues. Now, about your system, though the theology sounds right, the reality is hard to reconcile. If I am correct, you are saying that unsaved men are body and soul-spirit. Then, upon salvation they are body, soul-spirit, and Holy Spirit. Even in saved people, emotions and rationality are too fickle to be called 'perfected' or regenerated. "Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness..."" Genesis 1:26 This 'image' and 'likeness' must be our soul and-or spirit, because God is not flesh. The spirit of man, regenerate or degenerate could still speak of this image. However, the soul, the emotion, the rational-irrational part does not seem like God at all! Saved or unsaved. My 'system' would explain the situation of a saved church, but all men sin. This would explain the battle that Paul waged within himself, as we also do. Our spirit is regenerated in Christ Jesus, but our soul is not totally under the authority of the Spirit of God. Regarding the 4-part man, the Holy Spirit is a 'Helper' to our spirit. In fact, the two are almost as one. I say almost, because, though we may be like Jesus, we will not become God. In any case these are my thoughts. It is different from what you proferred, and quite different from JVH0212 and John MacArthur. Mine is simpler and more elegant (neat), though the Bible does not say, "The soul and the spirit of man are seperate, dummy!" I think that much of the confusion comes from the difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament. I does seem that the two are used interchangeably and arbitrarily. This could be because of the diference in the relationship between God and His people(?) However, in the New Testament the differences between soul and spirit are more evident, especially in the understanding of regeneration, the born again experience. Well, I am getting groggy. If I write any more, I may fall into stupidity. Good night. In Christ Jesus, charis |

Dear JVH0212, You know as well as I do that the Bible doesn't say, "The soul and spirit are separate entities, dummy!" :-) Please read what I wrote to inhzsvc a few minutes ago. Dear inhzsvc, You are correct, that is what I meant. Also, though Jesus was flesh, His body is now glorified, no longer flesh like us. I await the glorification of the body, soul, and spirit that will make us like Him. (Not exactly, but a lot closer than the present) In Christ Jesus, charis |
