61 | Simple analogy to understand the Trinity | 2 Cor 13:14 | Sir Pent | 120478
My analogy of the Trinity............................................. Many people have asked me over the years about how to understand the idea of the Trinity of God. With my background in science, I have found the best example to be one of the most common molecules on Earth...H2O! Everyone is familiar with H2O, it can be a solid (ice), a liquid (water), or a gas (steam). They all three have different properties, but are still the same molecule. For instance, some forms are easier to see or touch than others. They also have different primary purposes, but are still all the same molecule. Ice keeps things cold, Water quenches our thirst, and Steam can power an engine. Similarly, the Father determines the will of the entire Trinity, Jesus restores our relationship with God, and the Holy Spirit guides and comforts us in our daily lives. Finally, they can all be in the same place at the same time. In science there is a phenomenon called the "triple point". At a certain temperature and pressure, a pure substance can be in all three forms at the same time. For scriptural and scientific support of the ideas in this post please read the first response to it (which can be found at the bottom of the screen). |

62 | Words were ADDED to later manuscripts | Mark 16:9 | Sir Pent | 120431
My answer........................................................ Hi Tim, I'm always glad to see your posts on the forum, although they are less common than they once were. Your question of how do I reconcile all of the variant texts in ancient manuscripts is a bit too broad. However, just like the supposed "contradictions" that people often bring to the forum, I do believe that there is an explanation for each of them if taken one at a time. |

65 | Why would we be undone? | 1 Cor 11:30 | Sir Pent | 120426
Attempt at consensus.................................................. Hi everybody, I don't think there is as much disagreement here as you all seem to think that there is. That being said, I would like to add my two cents. We all agree that only God has the power and authority to justify us. Don't we all agree that God giving us this privaledge of salvation that we do not deserve is grace? Don't we all agree that if we accept this free gift of God and become Christians, there is a change in who we are? Don't we all agree that after who we are is changed, that our life will change as well. Our actions will align more and more with the will of God? Don't we all agree that there are people who continually live in a way that is offensive to God and they do not even try to please Him? The fruit of these people indicate that they have never been changed on the inside regardless of their claims. Therefore, it is true that salvation comes by faith alone. However, it is also true that a person's life is one evidence of whether they truly have faith or not. |

66 | can you give some scriptures? | Bible general Archive 2 | Sir Pent | 119802
Personal Note............................................. Hi Hank, Ha, ha :) You are very correct. A person couldn't survive suicide. I should have said survived a suicide "attempt". This reminds me of one of my favorite movies called "It's a Wonderful Life". There's a line in there that says suicide is illegal around these parts. However, I wonder what the punishment would be considering the person would already be dead? |

An opposing view............................................. Hi MikeC, The question that you asked about indulgences deals with a specific belief of the Catholic branch of Christianity. Emmaus has recommended two websites that give more information on the subject from the Catholic perspective. Although, I respect Emmaus as a fellow forum member, and almost always agree with his posts, I do disagree with this Catholic belief. I would like to point out that the Protestant branch of Christianity has a very different perspective on indulgences. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indulgences http://www.ianpaisley.org/article.asp?ArtKey(put an equals sign here)indulgences http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2001/109/45.0.html However, this is not an issue that I want to get in a debate about, and to do so would get this thread blocked anyway :) |

68 | Words were ADDED to later manuscripts | Mark 16:9 | Sir Pent | 119797
Personal Note............................................. Hi Kalos, Thanks for your response clarifying your position. I am glad to hear that you also believe the Bibles that we have today to be "reliable". One word of caution though would be that you seem to still be saying that there were times when the Bible that people had was not reliable. By saying that some of the later "manuscripts" had words added, or that "earlier translations" were less reliable, you still introduce doubt into the authority of scripture. If you can judge those previous Bibles to be faulty that the people of their day trusted, then how do you know that hundreds of years from now people won't say the same thing about our Bible today? I believe that God has protected the truth and accuracy of His Word throughout all the time, copying, and translating since it was first written. Therefore, I believe that the Bible was just as authoritative in the manuscripts that the early church had, as it was in the early translations (like KJV) that the people had hundreds of years ago, and as it is still today in all of the major translations (NAS, NIV, etc.). |

69 | can you give some scriptures? | Bible general Archive 2 | Sir Pent | 119796
Defense of my position......................................... Hi BradK, I appreciate both your and Tim Moran's opposing viewpoint, and actually agree with you that suicide is not an unforgivable sin. I believe that if a person somehow survives suicide, they can indeed repent to God and be forgiven for it. However, if the person does not survive, then they cannot be saved. This is not because their sin is so terrible, but simply because a person cannot be saved who is in denial of God at the time that they die. I think that you and I would both agree that if a person dies in a state of denial of God's essential character then they cannot be saved. Therefore, the disagreement is simply over whether we believe that the person committing suicide is denying God or not. As I stated in my previous post, a person who commits suicide (assuming mental capability for rational thought) is making a decision based on several beliefs. They believe that their present situation is beyond God's ability to help them through (denying His power) or that He does not want to help them (denying His love). They also deny that He has a plan for the rest of their life (denying His word in Jeremiah 29:11). Do you have any other way to see this than a denial of God? |

70 | can you give some scriptures? | Bible general Archive 2 | Sir Pent | 119557
Scriptural support........................................... Hello Tara, There were a lot of ideas in my post on this subject, but I'll try to give some referrences for most of it. I stated that murder is a suicide is murder and therefore a sin. That comes from the 10 commandments and can be found in Exodus 20:13. I stated that when a person comits suicide, they are deciding that there is no way out of their current circumstance or that the rest of their life is not worth going through whatever circumstance that they are in. That goes against God's promise that He will not allow us to go through more than we can overcome with His help. This promise is found in 1 Corinthians 10:13. That attitude also denies either that God is all powerful and can help us, contradicting the scripture that everyone knows God is all powerful (Romans 1:20), or that God is loving and has a good plan for our life. That contradicts the scripture found in Jeremiah 29:11. Taking all these things into account, it becomes clear that a person comitting suicide is clearly choosing to stop acknowledging God for who he is (Romans 1:28). In fact, it lists murderers as doing this in Romans 1:29. The scripture says that people who do this are worthy of death (Romans 1:32). A person who ends their life denying God cannot be saved, because there is no other way to be saved. The scripture that supports this is Acts 4:12. Finally, I ended my post by giving the exception that it is possible for a person who is mentally unstable at the time of death to comit suicide without actually thinking through the process and deciding to deny God. In that case, that person has been given less and less is expected. The idea that those of us who are given more being expected of more by God comes from Luke 12:48. I hope that these verses give some context for the beliefs that I have stated, and most of all, I hope that God can work in the situation that you are in to bring about good. After all even things that appear to be bad can be part of God's plan for good. See Genesis 50:20 for an example. In addition, we know that God works all things for good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28) |

72 | No trnsfiguration account in John? | John 1:14 | Sir Pent | 119496
Personal Note.............................................. Mommapbs, Thanks for pointing out that the disciples fell asleep at both the transfiguration and in the garden where Jesus was arrested. These were two times when they most should have been awake and in prayer, yet they gave into temptation of the flesh. Isn't it interesting that thousands of years later, Satan still uses the same strategy. How many times have I tried to read the Bible or pray early in the morning or late at night, and find myself giving into sleep and losing focus on God? |

73 | Words were ADDED to later manuscripts | Mark 16:9 | Sir Pent | 119494
An opposing view............................................. Kalos, Unless I misunderstand your post, you seem to be quoting the position that words have been added to our modern Bibles that were not originally meant to be there by the authors or God. I disagree with that position, and would recommend that people interested in this subject type in the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will go to a thread that contains many forum member's thoughts regarding the inspiration of the Bible. The consensus was that we can trust the Bibles that we have today just as much as the originals, and that is what I believe. |

76 | Are there different heavenly rewards? | 2 Tim 1:9 | Sir Pent | 119293
My answer........................................... Hi Big Al, There does seem to be scriptural support that some people will have more reward in Heaven than others. Check out the passage (1 Cor 3:11-15) where it talks about the work that we build on Christ's foundation surviving as gold, silver, etc. However, the work that is on any other foundation, such as ourselves, will be burned up. There are also the places where Jesus tells us to store up treasure in Heaven (Matt 6:20). I assume that some people follow that command more than others. |

77 | What is Christianity? | John 3:16 | Sir Pent | 119292
My answer........................................... Hi Chummypupcy, You have asked a very big question to which one could answer in a variety of ways. One way to define Christianity is to look at what beliefs are consistently upheld. I would recommend that you type in the number 114284 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to a post by Emmaus, who included the 2 most famous creeds (Apostle's and Nicean) and some scripture to back them up. Another way is to define some of the most important concepts in Christianity. I would recommend that you type in the number 18160 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to the first of 2 posts that I once wrote to do this very thing. A third way to explain what Chirstianity is would be to talk about it in terms of the relationship that we have with God. I think that this is the most complete understanding of what it is, however, it is also the hardest to explain in an objective manner. I would say that being a Christian means that you have a relationship with Jesus Christ where He is your savior. I would also say that you have a relationship with God where He is your Lord and friend. |

79 | Blasphemy against Holy Spirit | Mark 3:30 | Sir Pent | 119129
Personal Note.............................................. Hi Norrie, I'm glad that God was patient and forgiving and allowed me to come back. I also haven't forgotten Star Trek, although I haven't watched most of the new shows, and the old ones don't come on anymore. As for your questions regarding blaspheming the Holy Spirit. I think that it is not a one time thing that can't be forgiven, but rather something that can't be forgiven as long as you continue to do it. For more of my thoughts on this do a search for number 21448. |
