62 | baptism and the appeal to God | 1 Pet 3:21 | Huron | 142090
My take on this is that back during Peter's time people where baptized shortly after conversion. They made a pledge or statement of belief on Christ at the time they were baptized. This was part of the "appeal to God for a good conscience" which is what actually allowed Peter to say that "baptism now saves you." Am I in the ballpark? Thanks! Huron |

Tim, I'm going to think about this for a bit. Huron |

64 | Yet another baptism question! | Col 2:12 | Huron | 131767
Well, the Spirit was definately there, and Johns baptism was with water, so I'd say both.
65 | Yet another baptism question! | Col 2:12 | Huron | 131698
This is a cross reference from Romans 6:4. Now in Romans chapter 6 he is talking about sanctification. Here in Colossians chapter two, Paul doesn't appear to be when you look at this verse and include up to verse 14. My hunch is that baptism doesn't provide justification, but this verse does seem to point at justification. Secondly, how can you tell when the word baptism means "with water", and when it means "with the Holy Spirit". I appreciate all views on this, whether you agree with me or not. Regards, Huron |

66 | Romans 6:4 sanctification or salvation? | Rom 6:4 | Huron | 131452
Interesting. Baptism in a metaphorical sense. Don't believe I've been exposed to that interpretation before.
67 | Romans 6:4 sanctification or salvation? | Rom 6:4 | Huron | 131391
It's my contention that Paul is talking about baptism in view of sanctification here in Romans 6:4 when you look at the whole chapter in context. Is that accurate, or is he speaking of baptism in regards to justification/obtaining salvation?

Good stuff, especially the last paragraph! Thanks! Huron |

69 | Did Jesus purify the temple twice? | John 2:15 | Huron | 126192
Ray, Thanks for the insight. That is another plausible explanation. Do you know of any other examples in John where he departs from the synoptics in similar fashion? Huron |

Sorry about the typo, I meant "here", not "hear."
71 | Did Jesus purify the temple twice? | John 2:15 | Huron | 126079
In John's Gospel, Jesus is shown hear purifying the temple in the early part of his ministry. Matthew, Mark, and Luke give an account of this near the end of his ministry. How do you account for this? Did Jesus purify the temple twice? I'll bet that I've read the NT 20 times or more and have never noticed it till now. Thanks! Huron |

72 | Nailing down John 3:16 | John 3:16 | Huron | 125990
That's what I had always believed. Seems John 1:7, 1:29 back up this view. Just wanted to make sure I was "on the beam". Huron |

73 | Freewill before the fall? | Gen 2:9 | Huron | 125838
Before Adam and Eve ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil did they have "freewill"? My guess is they did, but I'm interested in hearing what others think about this verse. Thanks! Huron |

74 | Nailing down John 3:16 | John 3:16 | Huron | 125837
Would it be fair to say that "the world" in this verse means all of mankind? Are there any qualifiers on the word "whoever" here? I read this as absolutely anyone, is that correct? Thanks! |

75 | Key verse of the Bible? | Not Specified | Huron | 125642
What would you say is THE key verse in the Bible? If you could just share one verse with the everyone that you met, what would it be? I'm guessing that for most people it would be John 3:16, but I would like to get some opinions. Regards, Huron |

77 | sound byte or context? | Not Specified | Huron | 125571
When using scripture to discuss Christian topics and support your viewpoint, how do you know how much context to use? To provide an overly simple example, 1 John 4:8 "The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love" Some people might argue from that verse that God wouldn't send anyone to hell, but in the context of the whole New Testament, or 1 John for that matter it obviously isn't true. So to be fair you can't use "sound bytes". To give a real world example, Romans 9:11 "For though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls," Now, if we look just at this one verse it seems to be the perfect verse in support of predestination. On the other hand, when you look at it in the context of Romans chapters 9,10,11 you see that Paul is explaining that just because the Jews have the birthright as God's chosen people that does not guarantee salvation for them. God can choose to use the Gentiles, and branch Israel could repent and be grafted back in to the tree. So, what real world rule of thumb do YOU use? Huron |
