Hi, Jack :: Wouldn't it also be fair to ask, "If Kim Clement is a true prophet, how did he get things wrong?" You see, there is no record in Scripture of a bona fide prophet, chosen by God Himself, ever being wrong. ..... The problem with self-proclaimed prophets, Jack, is this: If in fact they are true prophets and get their prophecies wrong even once, then that would mean that God didn't get it right when He inspired the prophet to prophesy. Thus we are faced with a choice. We must choose to believe the prophet who claims to be inspired by God or to reject him. If we choose to believe he is divinely inspired yet see clearly that his prophecy is simply untrue, what can we say then? That God made a boo-boo? Or do we amend our thinking about the prophet's claim and accept the obvious, that the prophet himself is bogus? Anyone with enough brass can claim to be a prophet. Those who are glitzy and gutsy enough to dazzle and deceive large numbers of people make pretty good money at it. --Hank
62 | Church membership...a requirement? | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 209409
Good, sound post, Doc. I've been a follower of Christ, i.e., a Christian for well over 50 years and never been quite able to understand the thinking of anyone who claims to be a Christian but refuses to tie himself to the church, the body of Christ. My analogy may be corny and simplistic, but for me to say that I am a Christian and refuse to affiliate myself to the church, for whose life the Lord gave His, is unthinkable. It's like saying that I am a citizen of the United States but refusing to obey its laws, to pledge allegiance to its flag or to honor the Constitution upon which it was founded and according to which it is governed. ..... Speaking of the very early days of the church, Scripture says, "And the LORD ADDED to the CHURCH daily those who were being saved" (Acts 2:27, emphasis mine). Salvation is God's sovereign work. God Himself adds the regenerate to the church, the body of Christ. Scripture does not teach that church membership is an option for God's elect. It is thus quite impossible to be among Christ's redeemed without being a member of His body, the church, since Scripture plainly states that it is God who adds to the church those who are being saved. --Hank
63 | specific antichrist characteristics/desc | Matt 7:15 | Hank | 209378
Dear aherbert :: Usually questions and comments with a strong political overtone are discouraged or simply not allowed on Study Bible Forum. But your question is so worded that it clearly is not designed to elicit a political melee on this Forum, and I believe it deserves an answer. ..... I doubt that there is scarcely a reader of this Forum who has not received one or more of the junk e-mails that you describe in your question. You mentioned that the phrase "according to Revelation" is often employed as a preface to the outlandish text messages that usually follow in this kind of cyber-trash. It is doubtful whether there has ever been a book, divine or secular, that has been more ill used and misinterpreted than the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. False teachers galore have made a career, and often a lucrative one, of scaring gullible people out of their skins with dire threats that they attribute to the Book of Revelation. And this scare tactic about the mysterious "man from out of the East," this charmer, this charismatic "antichrist" is merely the dregs of the same sour old wine dressed up in new wineskins. .... You ask where all these people are getting these specific details about the antichrist. My answer is that there are a lot of people on the internet who have vivid imaginations and practically no knowledge of Scripture. .... You need to learn what the Bible says and doesn't say about antichrist. May I suggest you kick off your quest by reading the article "Who Is the Antichrist?" on the following website: http://www.gotquestions.org/antichrist.html ..... This is a conservative and responsible website. Next, read the "antichrist" entry in one or more good Bible dictionaries. Then, do an search of the word "antichrist" in an exhaustive Bible concordance. There is a free one right here on this website of the NASB. The editors of gotquestions.org recommend a source book on the antichrist which you may wish to check out when you read the article I've recommended. ...... The purveyors of false teaching rely for their success on the ignorance and gullibility of their readers and listeners, so let's not be slack with learning what the truth is by diligent application to the study of Scripture. You could do worse than to make 2 Timothy 2:15 your motto and high aim in life. ..... Welcome aboard the SBF website. --Hank
64 | want your opionion | 1 Thess 4:15 | Hank | 209370
Dear Jack :: In welcoming you to Study Bible Forum, I'd also like to point out that srbaegon, jlhetrick and Azurelaw have given you biblical references to your question but have not given you their opinions. ...... So, since it is an opinion you want, suppose I come forth with unmitigated brashness and say to you that it is my opinion that Christ will come at 6:46 Greenwich Mean Time on the morning of August 19, 2022. I have no Scripture with which to back up my opinion. I can't even back it up using the Daily Horoscope from my morning newspaper. And, to be perfectly honest, I can't even back the opinion up with anything more substantial than thin air. So what possible benefit can you or anyone else derive from my opinion? I don't even believe it myself, because to tell the truth, I have no such wild opinion as that. As with all other matters of religious faith and practice, I base my belief on the Second Coming of our Lord soley on what the Bible says, and it says that no one knows the day or the hour (see Matthew 25:1-13). ...... Please consider the all-important difference between asking "What is your opinion about thus and so?" and "What does the Bible teach about thus and so?" --Hank
65 | God Punished New Orleans with Katrina | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 209358
Val :: In my post 209308 on this thread I endeavored to make the point that questions on events such as the Katrina-New Orleans hurricane disaster tend to lead to speculation. And they invariably do. You admit in your post to Brad that what you wrote on the issue was your opinion. And opinion and speculation are at least close cousins if not identical twins. What makes this a Bible study forum is the study of the Bible. Dishing out opinions on any issue -- be it why hurricanes hurt and often kill people or why some dogs bite and others only bark -- is not Bible study. The central question, it seems to me, should not be "What is my opinion on thus and so?" but rather "What does the word of God teach on thus and so?" Opinions may be fun to read and even more fun to write, but they don't teach us very much, do they? --Hank

Myrtle2 :: I can't find New Orleans or Hurricane Katrina mentioned in Scripture. :-) ...... Any attempt to answer these kinds of questions calls for speculation. We hold that it is far better to learn as much as possible of what God has revealed in His word instead of speculating about what He has not revealed. I've been studying the Bible for more than 50 years and yet have done little more than scratch the surface of God's revealed truth. So that has left me precious little time to engage in speculation and guesswork. Perhaps some day ages and ages hence I may speculate a bit, but I simply don't have time for it now. --Hank

70 | Did Adam have other kids beside Cain Abe | Gen 6:4 | Hank | 209211
Livingword :: Welcome and thanks for your question. ..... As regarding your first question, Scripture does not say how much time elapsed before Adam and Eve bore Cain and Abel. Scripture does make it clear that Cain and Abel were not the only two children of Adam and Eve (see Genesis 5:4). Finally, the answer to your last question, "where did the rest of the other people come from?" is this: God created only two people, Adam and Eve (see Genesis 2:7-25). All other human beings who have ever lived and all those who are living today are descendents of the one man (Adam) and the one woman (Eve) whom God created. --Hank

It's good to have you, and we hope you will find this website a friendly place to engage in the study of God's word and to enjoy the fellowship of Christian men and women from near and far who gather here to learn more about God's Holy Word, the Bible. ...... Quite some time ago I spent an enjoyable year and a half in southern Germany, in the Stuttgart area, as a member of the U. S. Army. I studied German during my time in the country and became fairly fluent in it. I have fond memories still of Deutschland -- the energetic and hospitable people, the lovely mountains and peaceful valleys, the vibrant, bustling cities and quiet, charming villages, and the delicious food. --Hank
73 | What main scripture book of romans? | Romans | Hank | 209107
gapeach :: If you are asking for a single verse from Romans that sets forth the theme of the whole epistle, I'd suggest Romans 1:16: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek" (ESV). ...... The power of the gospel is the power of God Himself. The effect of the gospel is salvation. The scope of the gospel is universal. But the condition is limited to those who believe, to those who have faith in Jesus Christ. --Hank

75 | how did jesus teach disciples about | Matt 16:19 | Hank | 208913
Matt1078 :: Your personal profile begins with these statements: "Saved 1967. Born again 1972." Tell us what you mean by "saved" and "born again" if you please. Do you conceive of the two terms as being separate entities? To put it another way, what is the difference between being saved and being born again, or how is it possible to be saved WITHOUT being born again? What do the Scriptures teach? --Hank
76 | Mathew 5.6 | Matt 5:6 | Hank | 208817
Hi, Dcmartin :: In Matthew 5:6 we have the fourth of the list of "Beatitudes" that are part of our Lord's discourse that we call "The Sermon on the Mount." You will note that in each of the Beatitudes, Jesus is not showing how to be saved; He is describing the characteristics of those who have been saved. Note in verses 1 and 2 of Matthew 5 that it was His disciples who came to Him and it was they whom He taught. He begins by saying, Blessed (which means happy) are the poor in spirit, and continues with blessed are they that mourn, blessed are the meek, and in verse 6, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled." These characterists of the true disciple of Jesus -- the poor in spirit, the mournful, the meek, they who hunger for righteousness -- are the very opposites of the proud, or haughty in spirit, or the self-righteousness of the Pharisees. Jesus is describing as happy not those who are prompous and self-righteous, but those who, as regenerate disciples of our Lord, recognize their own spiritual poverty and yearn for that righteousness which only God can give them. ..... And Jesus says, "for they shall be filled." The Greek word for filled (chortazo) means to experience a complete and total satisfaction, a satisfaction such as the world is incapable of providing. In the beautiful words of Psalm 107:9, the psalmist declares, "For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness." ..... Nearly 500 years ago Teresa of Avila summed it up succinctly in four words: "God alone is sufficient." --Hank

78 | sola scriptura | 2 Tim 3:16 | Hank | 208810
The Latin term _sola scriptura_, which means _by Scripture alone_ was one of the principal slogans of the Protestant Reformation. As frequent readers and contributors of Study Bible Forum know, we have adopted _sola scriptura_ as our principal slogan also. But how many of our readers and contributors have a working knowledge of the meaning and significance of the term? Here is a link to a fine article on _sola scriptura_ that perhaps all of us could read with profit. It is particularly recommended to those who recognize that they need to learn more about this important concept and to those who think they already know everything there is to know about it. :-) Here is the link: http://www.gotquestions.org/sola-scriptura.html ....--Hank

Pray that we may unite for a common purpose, "to know Him more clearly, to love Him more dearly, and to follow Him more nearly." Those wonderful words were written centuries ago by Richard of Chichester and are no less true today than the day they were penned. ..... Soli Deo Gloria! Grace to you, and "Peace, be still" (Mark 4:39). "Be still, and know that I am God! (Psalm 46:10). "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.
