61 | turn of events God's Will for rehoboam? | 2 Chr 10:15 | Hank | 202697
Dear Rachel :: In connection with the questions you have raised in regard to 2 Chronicles 10:15, concerning the character and acts of God, you ask, "Any explanation?" Yes, Rachel, there is a perfectly good explanation, one that we human beings are prone to pass over as we seek to find other ways -- human ways -- to understand and explain the Bible's message. In our efforts to reduce the mighty acts of God to terms that that we, in our limited and finite vision, can easily grasp, we often lose sight of the absolute sovereignty of God, and we forget what God said: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord" (Isaiah 55:8, KJV). ....... God is sovereign. "The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, and His sovereignty rules over all" (Psalm 103:19, NASB). ...... God is sovereign. "The LORD reigns. He is clothed with majesty; the LORD has clothed and girded Himself with strength; indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved" (Psalm 93:1, NASB). ....... God is sovereign. "The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many islands be glad" (Psalm 97:1, NASB). ....... God is sovereign. "Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker -- an earthenware vessel among the vessels of the earth. Will the clay say to the potter, 'What are you doing?'" (Isaiah 45:9, NASB). ...... Perhaps it would be edifying to go back to the verse, to read the verse in context by reading a larger portion of the passage, to read a cross reference in 1 Kings 11:29-39, and to bear uppermost in mind that God is sovereign ... always. --Hank

63 | absent from the body, in presence of the | 2 Cor 5:8 | Hank | 202475
Dear lumbo :: Welcome to Study Bible Forum. The specific verse you are looking for is 2 Corinthians 5:8, but it should be read in the context of 5:1-8. ....... The biblical response to the second part of your question is yes, the immortal soul of the Christian goes to be with the Lord at the moment of physical death (v. 8). Thus the apostle refutes the doctrine of "soul sleep" which states that at death a Christian sleeps, unconscious, until Jesus comes. The words of Jesus on the cross to the penitent thief are in perfect harmony with this text (see Luke 23:42,43). --Hank

hardhead2 :: Are you being serious? The Bible doesn't offer blow-by-blow instructions for sparring with one's spouse! But try learning what Ephesians 5:22-33 has to teach you about God's way with marital relationships. --Hank
65 | How do I forgive adultry if it continues | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 202108
TJS :: Long experience on Study Bible Forum has taught us that it is unwise, and can in fact be outright dangerous to the inquirer, to attempt to dispense specific personal advice and counsel on this Forum, particularly about domestic situations. Accordingly, I repeat for emphasis what Brad Myers has already suggested to you, that you obtain personal counsel from a trusted pastor or other qualified Christian advisor. In doing this we are by no means trying to evade the situation or brush you off; and certainly it is not to be construed as being indicative of an uncaring or mean spirit. The Forum is designed for the study of Scripture and does not purport to be equipped to deal with matters that clearly require personal counselling. So perhaps you will consider seeking out a trusted pastor. It is quite possible that he may be able to help you in ways which we through the use of this medium simply cannot do. Welcome to the Forum. It is hoped that you will find something of spiritual edification here. If you would like to review the terms of use, you may gain a better grasp of what the Forum is designed to do. --Hank
66 | is there any difference between a 'God f | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 202087
Joyle :: Properly used, the term "Christian" describes a child of God, a regenerate believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. The reason I say properly used is that Christian has been misapplied and used in a vague way to describe what is not necessarily altogether Christian, as in the term "a Christian nation," etc. To call someone a "God-fearing person" does necessarily denote that he is a born-again believer in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. ...... There are two kinds of fear, secular and religious, described in the Bible. Some modern Christian preachers and teachers tend to de-emphasize, or omit entirely, the fear of God. Their stress is placed solely upon the love of God without even mentioning the consequences of disobeying a wrathful and holy God who holds men accountable for their sins. While there is indeed a greater emphasis placed on the love of God in the New Testament, the element of fear was proclaimed by the early church. In Phiippians 2:12 the apostle Paul laid it down to believers that they were to work out their salvation "with fear and trembling." Acts 9:31 records that the churches "were edified and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, were multiplied." ...... The classic definition of "the fear of the Lord" as the term is used in Scripture is reverential trust. He who teaches the love of God to the exclusion of the judgment of the holy and righteous God should read Jonathan Edwards' sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God (available on line). The early New Testament church stood in awe and fear in the presence of a holy God, and so should the church today, for to fear God and keep His commandments is the whole duty of man (see Ecclestiastes 12:13). ...... So, a Christian is by biblcial definition a God-fearing person. But it does not follow that one who fears God (it could be a pagan god he fears) is necessarily Christian. --Hank
67 | should ministers have sex before preachi | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 201750
Eton :: Nothing in Scripture mandates that ministers should have sex before they preach! At all events, sexual union should be between a husband and his wife, i.e., one man married to one woman. This is God's plan and has been thus since Eden. See Genesis 2:24. --Hank

Dear deakduck2 :: David's prayer which constitutes Psalm 51 is ample evidence that the answer to your question is a definite yes. ..... 70 | easter egg hunt in sanctuary | Col 3:1 | Hank | 201512
No, windsongchloe, I do not believe it is wrong for you to be upset by your church's allowing its sanctuary to be turned into a hiding place for Easter eggs! That would upset me too, big time. ...... How does hiding Easter eggs in God's house glorify Him? What does hiding eggs have to do with worshiping the resurrected Christ? When these kids grow up, are they going to remember the sanctuary as the place where people worshipped God -- or where they had fun searching for Easter eggs? Those seem fair enough questions to ask, and they should be asked of your pastor and the church's leadership. ...... Do they not know that the very word "Easter" comes from the name of a pagan goddess of spring, that bunnies and eggs are also associated with pagan rites, and that modern Easter is nothing on earth but a crassly commerical claptrap designed to sell chocolate bunnies, egg-filled baskets and frilly clothing? ...... Many churches, including the church that my wife and I are members of, do not use the word Easter at all, but instead call the day Resurrrection Sunday. And we do not sponsor Easter-egg hunts! --Hank

Wendi, you may be thinking of 1 Corinthians 15:51: "Behold, I show you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed." I once heard a pastor say in jest that this verse is a good description of what goes on with the little ones in the church nursery. :-) --Hank
74 | Explanation of communion | 1 Cor 11:26 | Hank | 200752
viejitro: Welcome to Study Bible Forum. Thanks for your question, which is: "Could you explain the importance of communion?" ..... The commemorative rite of communion (frequently called the Lord's Supper) is one of two ordinances of the church (the other is baptism). The Lord's Supper symbolizes a memorial to remind Christians of the central truth of their faith, the atonement of Christ (1 Cor. 11:24,25). It is also a time for the believer to engage in self-examination of his walk with Christ (1 Cor. 11:27-29). As often as members of Christ's body, the church, "eat this bread and drink this cup" they "proclaim the Lord's death till He comes" (1 Cor. 11:26). ...... Other related passages of Scripture: Matt. 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:29,20; Acts 2:42; 20:7; 1 Cor. 10:16. --Hank
75 | What about the call to lead? | Acts 1:8 | Hank | 200565
LostSheepProdicalSon -- Welcome to Study Bible Forum. In your user name, don't you mean prodigal son? ..... One of the last things that Jesus did before He ascended into heaven was to issue His "calling" (perhaps the better word is either "command" or "commission") to His disciples. As recorded in Matthew 28:18-20, He said, "All authority has been given Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." These words of our Lord are commonly known as the Great Commission, and since the day Jesus spoke them, they have been the marching orders to all Christians everywhere. --Hank
76 | contraceptives and bible | Gen 1:28 | Hank | 200498
Dear jedal :: My, but you're a persistent fellow! :-) That's fine. Nothing to be ashamed of. More often than not, persistence pays, as the saying goes. .... Jedal, the subject of birth control (contraception) is a complex one and even among Christians often a controversial one. The Bible says a great deal about being fruitful and multiplying and next to nothing about birth control as we use the term in our time. Even birth control and contraception are not always terms pertaining to the same thing. In a broad sense one could label abortion a form of birth control but it is certainly not a form of contraception. Deliberate and willful abortion is not contraception; it is murder of a human being who already has been conceived but is developing in the womb awaiting the time to be born. ...... Since, as I've pointed out, this is a complex subject, I've opted to cite for your inspection three articles from a web site that is conservative, biblically based and doctrinally sound. The name of the site is gotquestions.org and from it I have chosen three articles for your reference. The URL's are as follows: http://www.gotquestions.org/birth-control.html ..... The next one is http://www.gotquestions.org/permanent-birth-control.html ..... The final one is http://gotquestions.org/abortion-Bible.html ..... If any of these links should fail to work for you, simply go to gotquestions.org and, using their search engine, type in key words birth control contraception for the first two articles, and abortion for the last one. ...... I hope that these essays will provide you with at least some answers to your question. Thanks for posting on Study Bible Forum. Grace to you. --Hank

78 | so hw many chapters it will come?????? | Ps 1:1 | Hank | 200313
There are 150 Psalms in the Psalter. Each Psalm is numbered and is sometimes referred to as a Chapter. About half are ascribed to David. That means some 75 were written by David. It therefore follows that about 75 were not written by David. I hope that this answer is clear to you, though by now I'm not entirely sure what your questions were. :-) --Hank
79 | "HOW MANY CHAPTERS WERE WRITTEN BY DAVID | Ps 1:1 | Hank | 200279
Superscriptions ascribe about one half of the Psalms to David. 2 Samuel 23:1 calls him "the sweet psalmist of Israel." --Hank
80 | Crying out loud Lord rescue me | 1 John 5:13 | Hank | 200061
Dear veund stokes :: Galatians 6:2 says, "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." And Ecclesiasties 3:1 says, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." ..... My dear fellow registrant on Study Bible Forum, your post touches my heart and I pray for a resolution of your personal anguish. ....... Now for a second look at those two quotations from Scripture with which I opened this post. The first was about bearing one another's burdens. There are times in the lives of most of us when we can help others bear their burdens, but there are also times when we desperately need others to help us bear our own, for as Ecclesiastes says, "to every thing there is a season." And on the strength of your post, it does in fact appear that the season has come for you when you should seek help from a pastor or other qualified counselor, perhaps your family physician -- someone who is qualified to help you bear your burdens. I will pray for you and you can feel comforted that other readers of this page will join me in prayer for you also. The Lord be with you. --Hank
