61 | Did God reverse the polyglot curse?? | Acts 2:1 | Hank | 84254
Mathew, in your answer to Portland's question concerning God's confounding of language during the time of the tower of Babel, you state that "this curse was reversed when God gave us the ability to speak languages and communicate in Acts 2." If this is true, why then am I, an English-speaking man, unable to understand a Japanese-speaking man nor he me, unless I study Japanese or he English? Isn't your statement rather sweeping? Isn't it inaccurate to hypothesize a general principle that God reversed the polyglot curse on the basis of the isolated event that occured on Pentecost in Acts 2? Is it not true that the empirical consequences of God's action on Pentecost do not support the hypothesis that He effected a general reversal of His action at Babel? --Hank
62 | Conversation With God? | Matt 7:16 | Hank | 83360
A certain well-known TV preacher in his address to a very large congregation related his conversation with God concerning some question that he, the preacher, had. In telling of the experience, the preacher repeatedly sprinkled his narrative with "God said (so and so) and I said (so and so). Then God said (so and so) and I said (so and so)." Thus he continued on and on with his account of his conversation with God. My question is, Is this the way God communicates with man today? Do Hebrews 1:2, 2 Timothy 3:16 and, for that matter, the entire Bible, have any relevancy in our time? Or can we, like the preacher reportedly did, strike up a conversation with God as we would with our next-door neighbor and get from Him personalized and instantaneous answers to our every question without having to bother to search the Scriptures? What does Scriptue say about how God communicates with man and man with God? --Hank
63 | Should Christians Pooh-Pooh Proof? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 81841
Statement observed on this forum: "We do not have to prove the existence of Jesus. We are called to be witnesses." The question is, How can one effectively witness about that of which he has absolutely no proof, can offer nothing substantive upon which he bases his faith, and dismisses as superfluous and immaterial the need to "prove all things; hold fast that which is good [1 Thess.5:21]? What was John's purpose in writing the fourth Gospel, if not that his words were "written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through His name" [John 20:31]? --Hank
64 | Can You Answer All Ten? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 80120
What should I call this? Perhaps, "Things I've always wanted to know but was afraid to ask." Having spent a couple of years on this forum, I've seen enough to know that just about every question under the sun has been asked at one time or another, thus giving me courage to ask a few myself.... 1. Does a person have to be saved to be baptized?.... 2. Who was the husband of Cain's wife?.... 3. Were the dinosaurs one of the lost tribes of Israel?..... 4. Should a person keep his salvation in a safe deposit box to keep from losing it?..... 5. Is it wrong to masticate?..... 6. If Jesus' brothers were really cousins, then doesn't that make Jacob and Esau twin cousins instead of twin brothers?..... 7. Is it o.k. to take a sun-bath on the sab-bath? 8. Does pre-destination mean that you arrive somewhere before you start?..... 9. In the United States, congressmen are elected but federal court judges are appointed. Does this mean that judges are not the elect but the congress is?..... 10. Does sea water have the same power to save as fresh water has?.... Well, I hope you enjoyed the questions, and I'm almost certain to enjoy your answers. To new users, browsers, lurkers, curiosity seekers and others of various stripes, be it known that these are what should be thought of as tongue-in-cheek questions. But even though they be such, they may serve you as a foretaste of what to expect on this forum. The only salient difference between my questions and legions of others that appear on this forum's menu with clockwork regularity is that mine are admittedly served to you in jest while others of no greater sense are not. --Hank

66 | Joseph: Jesus' father? | Luke 2:33 | Hank | 76047
The King James Bible and NKJV have Luke saying "Joseph and his (Jesus') mother" in 2:33, whereas the modern versions I've consulted render it "His father and mother." Can the difference be accounted for because of a difference in the manuscript texts that were used? Surely it could not be attributed to sloppiness of translation or to an attempt of the translators of modern versions to strip Jesus of His deity, do you suppose? I know we interpret the passage to mean that Joseph was Jesus' legal father, but that's not what the passage says in the modern versions, except the NKJV, which reads as the KJV. Any thoughts? --Hank
67 | What do "any" and "all" really mean? | Rom 10:9 | Hank | 74842
John Reformed and Reformer Joe: In 2 Peter 3:9b appears this phrase, "not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentence." Of whom is the Apostle speaking when he uses the words "any" and "all"? Does he really mean "any" and "all" or is he saying one thing and meaning something else? --Hank
68 | Bible Versions Galore: Good or Bad? | Acts 26:24 | Hank | 68931
To all you guys on the "Do you own a TNIV?" thread (and anyone else who may wish to weigh in): It might be useful to kick around some or all of the ideas suggested by the following questions: Do you find it soothing or confusing to have so many translations floating around? Do you think the gender-neutral versions good or bad, true to the text or pushing it too far? What do you consider the real motivation behind Bible publishers who come out with a new translation about as often as car makers come out with new models? Is there are real need for all these translations? Is a literal translation better or worse than a paraphrase, and why? Do so many versions tend to create a modern-day Tower of Babel atmosphere in churches and Bible study groups? Do you feel there is any likelihood of any one version rising above the commond herd to gain a lofty status anywhere near what the KJV has enjoyed for nearly four centuries? Do you think it's wise to stick to one version or play the field? Do you find study Bibles useful, or do you prefer to do your own digging? If you had to surrender all versions but one, which would you keep, and why? Have fun. Perhaps we all of us will learn something that will help us in our quest to learn more about God's word. --Hank
69 | Question #5 for tremere123 | Exodus | Hank | 67773
tremere123: From your post #67713: "...there is only one sin that cannot be forgiven and that is to deny or 'blasphemy' God once you make the commitment to be 'reborn'." .... Jesus makes it clear what the unforgivable sin is. Do you know what it is and can you cite the scriptural reference for it? And where do you find scriptural support your phrase "once you make the commitment to be reborn?" How does one make a commitment to be reborn? Does he "reborn" himself? --Hank
70 | Question #4 for tremere123 | Exodus | Hank | 67772
tremere123: From your post # 67733: In answer to the question regarding the qualifcations of an elder, you posted this: "I think that an elder is someone who is either older than you or someone in authority"...etc. The New Testament lays down specific qualifications for elders. What are they, and why did you not answer this question from Scripture instead of with a vague and rambling series of "I thinks"? --Hank

tremere123: From your post #67735: "...if we don't believe God's work or testimony...that is (Jesus) we cannot believe in God who did or created the work (Jesus)." Again, chapter and verse. Are you saying that God created Jesus? --Hank
72 | Question #2 for tremere123 | Exodus | Hank | 67770
tremere123: From your post #67739: "Rumor has it that several angels are jealous that we humans can choose to love God." ..... Is this is a biblical teaching? Can you can cite a biblical reference for it? If so, apparently the Bible has begun to deal in rumor, is that not true? --Hank
73 | Question #1 for tremere123 | Exodus | Hank | 67769
tremere123: OK, I accept your invitation: impress me! From your post #67739: "...God gave us free will and in order to give us free will He had to create a bad choice as well as a good choice." ... Please show this forum where the Bible teaches any such thing as this. Remember your promise. Cite Chapter and Verse. --Hank
74 | Can We Put God in the Dock? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 65333
Here is a statement from Post No. 65304: "God is now obligated." Can anyone justfy this statement by citing Scripture? Wherein does Scripture teach that we sinful human beings have the authority, the power, or the right to put God in the dock, to place, by any act of our will, the sovereign Lord under obligation of any kind? --Hank
75 | Can We Put God in the Dock? | John 3:16 | Hank | 65335
Here is a statement from Post No. 65304: "God is now obligated." Can anyone justfy this statement by citing Scripture? 76 | Bootstrap Salvation? | Eph 2:8 | Hank | 63870
Humanism teaches a "bootstrap salvation" of sorts. The humanistic worldview asserts that man is captain of his own soul, the master of his fate. Major world religions, except Christianity, teach that works are a vital ingredient in the salvation forumla. Even some Christians believe that salvation hinges upon some combination of faith and good works, even though the Bible states plainly that salvation is the gift of God, a product of His grace made manifest through faith in His Son who paid the price by going to the Cross. The question is: Why do you suppose it is so difficult for some to come to grips with the biblical truth of John 3:16 and Ephesians 2:8,9? The biblical view of salvation is so unlike the views of humanism and pagan religions. Could it be that some professing Christians who insist on adding works as a requisite of salvation are being influenced by secular views without being fully aware of it? Can we think like the world thinks, allow ourselves to be influenced by prevailing worldviews, and yet follow Christ and His teachings also? In essence, do you think that there is a trend that modern Christians and churches tend to think more in harmony with the worldview than with God's view -- not only on the "good works" topic but in other areas as well? Let's try to keep this "on topic," by backing up views with what the Bible teaches. --Hank

I notice that you have posted 76 questions to the forum. 3 notes and no answers, so let me ask you a question [and give YOU an opportunity to answer]...... Where do you get all your questions? 79 | What is truth? | John 18:38 | Hank | 52056
Dear Forum: In John 18:38 Pilate asked Jesus, "What is truth?" On this forum we have many different and opposing points of view on critical issues, yet each of these views is being offered as the truth. One says baptism is necessary for salvaton; another says no, not so, faith alone is sufficient. One says man has free will; another says no, he does not. One says the believer has eternal security; another says no, you can lose your salvation unless you do good works. The list of opposing viewpoints is virtually endless. Can two points of view both be true when they say opposite things? So, Forum, what IS truth and how do we find it and recognize it when we see it? --Hank
80 | Has Anyone Changed His Mind? | Eph 2:8 | Hank | 51253
Has anyone on this forum who initially logged on to it believing that salvation is by grace only through faith only in Jesus Christ only been persuaded to change his mind as a result of anything he has read on these pages about baptism and works being necessary for salvation? --Hank
