41 | Cristians are a no show in Culture War | Luke 17:3 | Sir Pent | 120844
Disagreement......................................................... Hi Pete2, I am confused why you don't think that Christians participate in the culture war. It seems to me that there are many Christians who are actively trying to shed light into the culture around them. The Salvation Army is a great example of a church that puts into practice the Christian beliefs of meeting the needs of the society around them. They are certainly not in a bubble :) The crisis pregnancy centers run by the Catholic church in cities across America are educating young mothers and helping them to have the support and supplies necessary for taking care of their babies. The Prison Fellowship ministry started by Chuck Colson has just recently been turning America's prisons around and greatly reducing recidivism (prisoners who go back to prison after release for more crimes). My local church currently shares around 50,000 dollars each year to support missionaries around the world who are sharing the message of Jesus Christ. Many of them are even from our church. Thousands of other churches are similarly involved. These are just a few examples of how Christians are indeed allowing God to use them to change the culture around them. |

Disagreement......................................................... Hi Bstudent, In your post, you said that I am wrong to designate the Bible as the highest authority in my life. You said that it was better to allow reason and logic to control you beliefs and actions. I disagree. Humanity is too good at rationalizing to trust your eternal soul to your ability to be rational. We need an anchor that is beyond ourselves and thankfully God has given us His Word to be just that :) 1 Cor 2:5 "so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God." |

Request for more information.......................................... Hi Mary01, In your post, you said that you did not think that the Bible passages that people had posted about the Trinity actually supported that idea. Could you please type the number 120479 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right of the screen. This will take you to a post that I wrote on the subject that contains several verses on the subject. I would be interested to know what you think that those verses mean since you don't think they support the idea of the Trinity. |

Referral to another thread........................................... Hi Ourfathersheart, In addition to the great post written by Hank, that Mommapbs referred you to, I would also recommend that you type in the number 21448 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to my post on the subject and some more discussion from other forum members. |

Referral to another thread............................................ Hi Cloud, Understanding the Trinity is not as impossible to understand as most people think. Please type the number 120478 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen for more information. P.S. Dear Lockman Foundation, why is Bstudent not banned from the forum? He has posted openly that someone should study with Jehovah's Witnesses (a known cult) in post 120593. He has also questioned the deity of Christ (breaking a forum guideline) by denying Jesus eternal nature (posts 119537 and 120536) and by declaring that Jesus is "separate and obviously inferior" to God (post 119192). |

My answer............................................................. Welcome to the forum Strts, It seems to me that there are three possibilities here. The first is that your pastor believes that your church needs help so much that it would require so much time that you would not be able to also be involved with ministry outside of your church. The second is that your pastor knows that the Bible study you participate in outside of church has cultic influences, and your pastor is trying to protect you from them. The third option is that your church is a cult and the pastor doesn't want you to be in a Bible study outside of the church where you might learn the truth and get out of the cult. Without more information, there is no way to determine which of these, if any, are the case in your particular situation. |

49 | what is the longst name in the bible? | Acts 20:15 | Sir Pent | 120526
A bit of comedy...................................................... Hi Voliefe2, Perhaps the longest name in the Bible is the place where Paul went after Samos and before Ephesus. That place's name has a "mile" in it. P.S. Where do these trivia questions come from? |

50 | Angels mentioned by name in Bible? | Dan 8:16 | Sir Pent | 120524
My answer............................................................ Hi Debbie, In protestant Bibles there are two good angels named "Gabriel" and "Michael". In Catholic Bibles there is a third good angel named "Raphael". As for bad angels, the only one named is "Lucifer" aka "Satan". |

51 | Sexual relations with my Fiance? | Gen 2:24 | Sir Pent | 120521
Referral to another thread............................................ Hi Teachandsing, Previous people have also asked that question. Please type the number 114024 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen to see several perspectives that I have on whether people should get married legally before having sex. P.S. Notice that the verse says to "leave you father and mother". I don't think a situation of having sex with someone while you're both still living sepperately with your parents fits this Bible verse. |

Personal Note......................................................... Hi Angel, I am fine with you calling me something other than my full screen name. I would most prefer if you called me by the one that you observe to allign with my posts. If you primarily consider my posts to be defending people and ideas that are right, then I would ask that you call me "Sir". If you primarily consider my posts to be "held in" and expressed with self-control, then I would ask that you call me "Pent". If you do not believe that my posts reflect either of these things, then perhaps you would prefer to just call me "Mark". P.S. I think that we are in agreement that if you subtract God from science, you lose all meaning and purpose. |

Personal Note........................................................ Hi Tim, I'm glad that we share the confidence in the authority of scripture both when it was written and even still today. I also look forward to more participation from you when your life calms down a bit. Until then, enjoy the piano :) |

Clarification......................................................... Hi Angel, I'm glad that you seem to agree that God does reveal Himself to us even through nature (science) and other fields like philosophy and astronomy. The reason why I thought you did not believe that, was your statement that "we cannot seek God through sicence, philosophy or any other human wisdom". I am glad that we are now in agreement, and I forgive you for not wanting to use my screen name. When I first came to the forum many years ago, several people also were concerned about it. However, if you'll click on my name, my user profile explains it's origin. |

56 | Civil punishment impossible? | Luke 17:3 | Sir Pent | 120487
A different perspective.............................................. Welcome to the forum Pete2, If I understand correctly, you are saying that as Christians we must have unlimited forgiveness, and that this would lead to chaos in society due to a complete lack of retaliation and punishment. The first thing that needs to be explained is that there are eternal consequences to sin and there are earthly consequences to sin. Imagine a drunk driver kills another person, and later repents of their sin. The eternal consequence of their sin (Hell) is then taken away and they can spend eternity with God after they die. However, some of the earthly consequences can not be taken away. Their car may be able to be repaired, but the person they killed will not come back. Thus even Christians can support earthly punishment. Even a forgiven thief would still have to repay his victims. The second thing that needs to be explained is that the "nice" thing is not always the Christian thing. Imagine a criminal who commits credit card fraud. They may repent and be forgiven. However, it could be the Christian thing to do, to cancel all their credit cards. It may seem like the "nice" thing is to just pretend nothing happened and let them have absolute freedom again. However, that would just be leading them into temptation. What is truly in their best interest may be eliminate the opportunity to sin again until they are able to overcome its tug. That is the key issue for a Christian. Our response to sin should not be to punish out of retaliation or vengenge, but instead out of tough love for the other person. We should be motivated by bringing them closer to God. |

57 | Premarital relations? | 1 Cor 7:9 | Sir Pent | 120484
Referral to another thread............................................ Hi Yates, You have already received a couple of great answers to your question, but I'll just throw in two more cents. In the Bible if a person had pre-marital sex, they were either stoned or forced to get married immediately depending on the circumstances. In either case, it was a very serious decision and not to be taken lightly or jumped into just because a person lacks self-control (which is a fruit of the Holy Spirit). Please type the number 114024 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen for several different perspectives on this issue. |

An alternative view................................................... Hi Angel, I agree with you that only through God's grace can we come to know Him. However, I would disagree that God doesn't use things like science and philosophy to bring people to Himself. Romans 1:20 says "For since the creation of the world His (God's) invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they (all humans) are without excuse." Luke 19:40 says "But Jesus answered, 'I tell you, if these (My followers) become silent, the stones will cry out!'" These are just two examples of places where the Bible supports the idea that nature (science) can and is used by God to bring people to know Himself. Please type the number 22206 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to a series of posts that I made once explaining how one can discover who God is from observing His creation. |

59 | who can explain to me? | John 1:1 | Sir Pent | 120480
An alternative view................................................... Hi Rowdy, You stated that it is difficult for us to understand the concept of the Trinity. Although most Christians do think that it is very complicated, I would suggest that there is a relatively simple explanation. Please type the number 120478 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen to see my thoughts on this subject. |

60 | Simple analogy to understand the Trinity | 2 Cor 13:14 | Sir Pent | 120479
Support for my Trinity beliefs........................................ The Father is God. Eph 4:6 "one God and Father of all..." One of the Father's primary purposes is to determine the will of the whole Trinity. Luke 22:42 "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me (Jesus); yet not My will, but Yours be done." The Son is God. John 1:1 "...the Word (Jesus) was God", John 10:30 "I (Jesus) and the Father are one." One of the Son's primary purposes is to reconcile humanity to God. 2 Cor 5:18 "Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation". The Holy Spirit is God. Acts 5:3-4 clearly equates lying to the Holy Spirit in verse 3 with lying to God in verse 4. There is further support in 1 Cor 2:10-11. One of the Spirit's primary purposes is to guide our daily lives. John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My (Jesus) name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."
