Beja, I looked in Wikapedia for both antinomianism and nomianism and didn't come up with anything BUT Wikapedia offered the following Novatianism From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search The Novatianists were early Christians following Antipope Novatian, held a strict view that refused readmission to communion of Lapsi, those baptized Christians who had denied their faith or performed the formalities of a ritual sacrifice to the pagan gods, under the pressures of the persecution sanctioned by Emperor Decius, in AD 250. They were declared heretical. Novatian Main article: Novatian Novatian was a Roman priest who in 251 opposed the election of Pope Cornelius, following the assassination of Pope Fabian during the persecution, on the grounds that he was too lax in accepting the lapsed Christians. He let himself be made a rival pope, one of the first antipopes. He held that lapsed Christians, who had not maintained their confession of faith under persecution, may not be received again into communion with the church, and that second marriages are unlawful. He and his followers were excommunicated by a synod held at Rome in October of the same year. Novatian is said to have suffered martyrdom under the Emperor Valerian I, 253-260 AD. Novatianism after Novatian After his death, the Novatianist sect spread rapidly, were found in every province, and in some places were very numerous. Those who allied themselves with the doctrines of Novatian were called Novatianists; their own name for themselves was the ("katharoi"), or Puritans, reflecting their claim not to be participants in the lax practices of the Catholics by which they believed the Catholic Church to have been corrupted. They went so far as to rebaptize their converts. Novatianists (including Novatian) were labelled by Rome as schismatics in not submitting to the bishop of Rome, and were by Rome labelled heretics in denying that the Church has the power to grant absolution in certain cases (such as to the Lapsi—those who had renounced their Christianity under persecution but later wanted to return to the church). Beyond that, their practices were the same as that of the Catholic Church in almost everything, including monasticism in the fourth century. End of Quote. Is this that to which you're referring? I've never heard of the word as you reference. Just looking for clarification. God bless, Inquisitor |

42 | When was the beginning? | Gen 1:1 | Inquisitor | 224791
I like to read the story of Creation in Genesis as straight forward and as simply as possible. For example, each day was designated with "morning and evening" so we can be assured that God executed His Creation in a mere six days. AND those six days each consisted of 24 hours as demonstrated throughout the rest of the OT. When a day was designated some other value, some other Hebrew word was used. To me personally, this kind of simple message of Creation demonstrates the full Majesty and Power of God. We do get to enjoy the after-effects. You may remember Naaman with leporsy who wanted to be healed very badly in 2 Kings 5. But when he went and visited that prophet of God, Naaman wanted God to come out on his terms and heal his leporsy as he thought He should. That's NOT God's Way; I like to think God showed all that Power and Majesty with Creation and did so in private without witnesses as He created man last. Yes, we have to choose between Creationism or Evolution. I hope this helps and God bless, Inquisitor |

43 | Text Clarification | Bible general Archive 4 | Inquisitor | 224754
I think Azure is right on target here. This concept is very much alien to the teaching of the Bible. I don't think there's any scripture to even suggest such a thing. Your friend should be challenged to furnish the verse to which he/she is referring. Thanks be to God you're there to defend His Word, 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; God bless you in your studies, Inquisitor |

108cious and Lionheart, It does look like you all have made a very good conclusion, coupling these words, Matt 15:24 with those about sheep from another fold. It does sound closer to the whole of God's Word than any other. God bless you. Inquisitor |

I most certainly agree. I think we've sharpened enough iron with each other on this one. Still, God bless each and every one of you. We're all working toward the same goal, thanks be to God. Inquisitor |

Just one that comes immediately to mind is that of Lazarus and the rich man. Many think this is a parable based with a fictional name then there are a significant portion of others who think this is based on a true story of two individuals who passed on to their Maker. Jesus doesn't give us much help with this quandry. This is the only one of which I can think at the moment, but I'll think on your question and will answer as best as I can. I would have to defer to someone else for an answer to the second question. |

48 | Arguing Among Apostles?? | Gal 2:11 | Inquisitor | 224730
I can only respond with what's in the Bible. In God's Word, we have many, MANY parables from the world's best Teacher, Jesus Himself. He teaches from Parables because He's the best at taking "earthly basic truths from God's Creation and illustrating points of Hevenly Principles or Truths from His Father." Now most of His parables are given so those with a hunger for righteousness (then and now) can see between the lines and appreciate the Teaching as given by our Lord. So that means we must learn to make conclusions, using our minds and gleaning the most important threads in those parables and arrive at the ultimate point to which our Lord is pointing. See Matt 13:10-16. Only with a very few Parables, the Lord is forced to interpret the Parable even to His beloved disciples, i.e. The Sower and the Parable on the wheat and tares, Matt 13. So here the Lord is actually encouraging us to "put two and two together" and come up with the right interpretation. Seems like a sound Biblical Principle to me. The most important conclusion to draw from all this is as you alluded. We MUST make certain we do conclude those things in accordance with the whole NT. Thus we don't have any contradiction within God's Word. This way, we can comply with Paul's words to Timothy. God bless you in your studies, Inquisitor |

I've heard other strange interpretations, including people from the past before Jesus' time and far in His future. So as I said, there's no value in speculating as to whom exactly Jesus is referring. When there's not any Bible commentary to help interpret such an unusual statement, it's best to leave it alone. God bless you all, Inquisitor |

51 | wHO ARE SHEEP FROM ANOTHER FOLD | Rev 7:9 | Inquisitor | 224724
Quoted for context: John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. 15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. 17 “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” 19 Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. 20 And many of them said, “He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?” 21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” This verse 16 is very difficult to interpret since it comes to us "out of the blue" and Jesus doesn't explain it. As far as I know, the Bible doesn't give much commentary on this phrase "sheep not of this fold." We do know that quite often Jesus referred to sheep when He was really referring to people. With this passage we can't even speculate very much. I would not place too much value or need for discussion since it doesn't seem to mean very much to God or His Son. God bless you, Inquisitor |

Then go ahead and do the right thing and post the question and that scripture(s) along your comment on it. Then we can know for sure we really are discussing with a true dedicated Bible student. We'll all be built up and edified as the Lord has commanded through Paul in Eph 4:11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Luke 24:1 Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’” 8 And they remembered His words. 9 Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Acts 20:7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. 1 Cor 16: 1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come. Now we can easily see why the first day of the week is so important to the first century christians as the Lord rose on that day just as He predicted in accordance with the OT prophecies. Then we see fulfillment of that guidance in the NT with obvious emphasis on the first day of the week in stark contrast to the Sabbath. On the subject of Patterns from our Lord: Phil 3:17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. 1 Tim 1:16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 2 Tim 1:13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. Tit 2:6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you. Heb 8:5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. One of the main themes we can see throughout both the OT and the NT is the fact that God has ALWAYS given mankind and His children guidance of one kind or another. For the ark, He gave Noah tremendous detail as He did for the Temple to David and Solomon. We all know about the tedious details (over 600 rules and regulations) God gave with the Law of Moses. BUT in stark contrast with the OT, the NT has minimal details, specific instructions and most of those from the Apostles who were commissioned to represent Christ in the first century, see below*. The decisions they made, i.e. Acts 15 with the blessing of the HS is most powerful. They issued a letter with only 4 restrictions, minimal details in contrast to the OT but of course they MUST be followed. *The Great Commission Matt 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Yes the title of this paragraph, "The Great Commission" is not part of the actual Biblical text but the message is clear. The Lord commissioned these men to represent Him to the world. Check the vast majority of commentaries and you'll see agreement on this concept. The bottom line is that Yes indeed there are Patterns in the NT to guide the Lord's church in this dispensation, the Christian age. I hope this helps in clarifying and God bless, Inquisitor |

If I gave that kind of impression, it's a great big mistake on my part. We CANNOT, we MUST NOT come up with imagination on the guidance as God gave in the NT. NO, NO, NO. Instead we must follow His Sacred Patterns such as the Day of Worship on Sunday, the first day of the week. Also we must imitate and follow the examples of the simple style of the elements of worship. I agree with you entirely. I meant for this discussion to be centered on the fact that we must inspect each other as you have done with me and make certain our words compliment with God's Word. This man of God in 1 Kings 13 (second in sequence) misrepresented God to the other man of God (first one) and he paid for it with his life. So we must see ourselves as vessels (messagers if you will) through which God's Light shines with His Words of salvation and His Son's body, the church. The imagination as mentioned in my post was merely an attempt to help visualize the confrontation between Paul and Peter. Again I agree with you, we MUST NEVER allow this kind of imagination to add to or take away from God's Word. And I would be the last person in the world to designate me as a teacher on this Forum. I hope this clarifies my position on this matter and God bless. Inquisitor |

Searcher, I'm not certain as to how I could improve on the clarity of my post but I'll try. Quoted from my original: What can we learn from this very unusual story from God? What would you say is the most important point for us to apply to our lives? Quoted from my last post: God's MUST always outrank anyone else when it comes to a contrast between two or more different sets of words. We must never let ourselves be swayed by the smooth and swave words of an experienced orator. We see more warnings in 2 Tim 4:1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. We're all on this Forum studying God's Word and bringing to the Forum the fruit of that study. Of course this involves Prov 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. 18 Whoever keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit; So he who waits on his master will be honored. 19 As in water face reflects face, So a man’s heart reveals the man. Sooner or later, each of us reveals our deepest and inner most thoughts on God's Word. Sure we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully, we're obeying God's commands and trying to maximize those strengths and minimize those weaknesses. Did you have some specific point you're were trying to say in response to my post? In a further attempt to answer your question, I can only encourage you to re-read my whole post again. Do you not agree that we must be on our guard when we see and hear words from our fellow man? Our God is looking for us to give His Word the respect He's due and study everything we encounter in the "religious world." We already know through Paul's prophecy that there will be many, many false teachers from his time to our present and on through the very last day. And the biggest difficulty (in my humble opinion) is the fact they have deceived themselves so effectively that they sound powerful and persuasive. Thus we who are sharpening each other must preach against these false views and concepts. I hope this helps. God bless you, Inquisitor |

Dad (tongue-in-cheek), I'm not certain but it seems you're trying to imply that my post was "speculating outside what has been revealed." Would you care to elaborate and pinpoint which particular statement is in conflict? I try very hard with all of my posts to this Forum to keep my statements within the bounderies of God's Word, or at least His Intent. Surely you don't think our Lord forbids us to use our imagination when He leaves out some of the details in His stories. I'm hoping to walk away from this thread of dicsussion with some encouragement. Do you have any such words for me? God bless you, Inquisitor |

Beja and Searcher, It looks like I'm not going to get much more response so here goes... Once again, I was going for a more far-reaching and powerful point from our God. I see this story as emphasizing just to whom should we as christians listen. So many times in mankind's history, a person such as Charles Russell or Joseph Smith comes on the scene and claims to be a man of God. But he teaches alien concepts in contrast to God's Word. We as christians MUST compare what we hear from our fellow man to God's Word. Our best example is from the Bereans in Acts 17:10 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. Notice they were listening to the great and noble Paul himself but that didn't cut no great stuff with them. They went to their scriptures to check and match his words with God's Word. We must never think we can take a man's word when it's in contrast with His Word. 1 Kings 13 makes that very clear along with Paul's words in Gal 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. God's MUST always outrank anyone else when it comes to a contrast between two or more different sets of words. We must take these words as directed from Paul to Timothy as though they were written to all of us. We must be on guard against those who have deceived themselves and then become very powerful in their speaking the perverted Words from God. Tell me what you think and God bless, Inquisitor |
