41 | Luke 24:36-words in red? | Luke 24:36 | Hank | 210101
Dear Husky :: Good question! I only wish I had the answer for you, but I don't and would be surprised if anyone else on the Forum does. The translation team at the Lockman Foundation probably does, and you can e-mail the Foundation and ask them. Simply go to Lockman.org and there click on "Contact Us," write your question in the box, include your own e-mail address in the space provided, and zip it off to them. I would guess that you'll get an expeditious reply, but if not let me know and I'll be happy to do whatever else I can to help you. If you do get the information you're seeking, please let the Forum know the answer to the mystery. Welcome aboard! --Hank
42 | Where is guidance to save my marriage | Gen 2:24 | Hank | 210098
Dear DMTN :: From the beginnings of Genesis come these words: The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." (Genesis 2:23,24). ...... The Bible speaks of a man and his wife as one flesh joined together in holy marriage. There is always two, always a partnership, never never his or her problem or responsibility, but always a mutual sharing, a common bond, a union of mind and body. Therefore, dear friend, as much as we'd like to be able to help, we dare not attempt to do so on this Forum lest we do you and your wife more harm than good. This is simply not the proper venue nor is it the purpose of Study Bible Forum to function as a marriage counselling service. Since, as we have stated, marriage is a God-ordained partnership between a man and his wife, problems that arise within the marriage must be addressed by both husband and wife, and resolved within the framework of the partnership. To this end, therefore, it may become desirable or even necessary to go before a trusted pastor or other Christian adviser who is qualified to give counsel and skillfully lead both you and your wife to a resolution of your problems. ..... And, finally, in good times or bad, in sickness or in health, whatever may befall, it is such a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. May good bless you and your wife. In all you both do, put Him first in your life. --Hank
43 | WHAT IS MEANT BY "COVER HIS FEET" 1SAM24 | 1 Sam 24:3 | Hank | 210096
Hello and welcome to Study Bible Forum. The phrase in 1 Samuel 24:3 you asked about, i.e., "to cover his feet," as the KJV renders it, is a euphemism for having a bowel movement. Some modern versions translate the phrase "to relieve himself" or "to attend to his needs." ...... It is of some interest to note how this expression which literally means "to cover his feet" came to be. Preparatory to "attending to his needs" a person would actually crouch and drop his garment to his feet, thus covering them. --Hank
44 | Is Christmas wrong...... | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 210089
Dear Hancock :: The remembrance of the "Christmas Story" from the Gospels is never wrong at any season of the year. When I was but a boy, I committed to memory the "Christmas Story" that Luke told so beautifully in Luke 2:1-20. For years I've gathered my children -- and now my grand-children too -- around the fireplace at Christmastime and recited this passage from Luke's Gospel in the majestic words of the King James Version. ..... But what the world means by Christmas is another thing. It is what C. S. Lewis used to call "the commercial claptrap." Lewis also used to lament that dreadful business of having to exchange gifts, which was more out of habit and custom than anything else. He observed that perfectly rational people would actually buy some useless trinket for a friend but they would never think of buying anything quite so absurd for themselves. ...... Your question has to do with whether it's wrong for Chrstians to celebrate Christmas. That depends in large measure upon which Christmas we celebrate, it seems to me. Do we put our emphasis on Santa Claus or on Jesus Christ? Are we more agog about what gifts we hope to get than about the gift of His Son that God has already given us? ...... Every year we hear someone remind us that He is the reason for the season. We hear it so often, in fact, that we may cease to listen to it. Yes, it's a trite saying, tired and worn out, and yet it doesn't hurt us to listen to it once more. He IS the reason for the season. ...... So let me wish you a Merry Christmas in the best possible sense of the term. --Hank
45 | Two Natures or One? | Rom 6:6 | Hank | 210073
Hi, Nevvvvine :: You ask why a Christian should "bother getting baptized today." Well, I really didn't know it was a bother at all! ..... Reason aplenty is that the Lord Jesus Christ commanded it (Matthew 28:19). Baptism of the believer in Christ by immersion in water is therefore an essential of obedience, whereas only faith is essential for salvation (John 3:36). Baptism neither saves nor contributes to salvation in any way. Salvation is wholly of God. Man is not saved by works. Man is not saved by faith plus works. Man is saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8,9). ...... Dear skateboardp :: Thanks so much for your question. Although it is an excellent one, it has not been answered very well. You may forget the terrible and murky advice about linking names and numbers to nature, whatever that means! ...... Skateboard, I'd like to recommend a web site to you that I believe will be of help to you in determining how to begin the wonderful journey -- and I pray the life-long one -- of studying your Bible. The article has down-to-earth practical hints on where to begin and how to proceed in your Bible studies. I hope you like it. Please let us know how you're progressing and how we may be able to help you. Here's the URL: http://www.gotquestions.org/start-reading-Bible.html --Hank
47 | Two Natures or One? | Rom 6:6 | Hank | 209965
Newwine :: I urge you in the strongest terms possible to read and take to heart Post 209949 entered by BradK. In it Brad quotes C. H. Spurgeon. and considering the sum and substance of your posts to date, my friend, it seems perfectly obvious that you may be able to profit by giving close attention to what Spurgeon has to say. ..... Again, that's post No. 209949. Please read it, study it, print it out and carry it with you -- and above all, think about it. Opinions and views based but loosely on Scripture, if indeed at all, are not edifying to the readers of Study Bible Forum. --Hank
48 | Two Natures or One? | Rom 6:6 | Hank | 209947
Newwine :: I'm confused about your position on baptism. Perhaps you can help clear away my confusion in this way: Which of the following statements more clearly reflects your belief? (1) Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. (2) Salvation is by grace through faith plus baptism. --Hank

50 | Just a question | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 209850
Nevvvvine :: The term you are asking about is "proof text," not "text proof." ..... Proof texting in its simplest terms is the methodology used in an effort to "prove" a doctrinal position by taking a passage or passages of Scripture out of context so that they appear to say what the person wants them to say. The proof text method of biblical interpretation generally ignores not only the immediate context of the verse but the broader context of the entire Bible. For example, a favorite proof text used by promoters of baptismal regeneration is Acts 2:38. ...... Genesis 6:14 provides a dramatic example of how misleading proof texting can be. Suppose we remove the verse from its natural context and interpret it soley on the basis of the command it contains. In that case, everyone who fears the Lord and yearns to obey His commands should head out to Home Depot first thing tomorrow in search of gopher wood in order to build an ark. ..... All of Scripture has been masterfully woven together into a seamless fabric. It was never meant to be read and studied in little isolated snippets while ignoring all the rest. We can "prove" or "disprove" about any doctrinal position we wish if we handle God's word recklessly and abuse it to further our own suppositional errors. In his second letter to Timothy, Paul charged him to "be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15). And indeed those who do not accurately handle the word of truth have every reason to be ashamed. And proof texting is not accurately handling God's word. --Hank
51 | Prophets in the church | Eph 4:11 | Hank | 209812
Nevvveine :: Before getting into the business of considering percentages of accuracy of today's so-called prophets, should we not first search Scripture to determine whether it supports the doctrine that there in fact are contemporary prophets at all? From the multiple passages in Scripture that warn against false prophets we may be sure that there are prophets today whose message is patently false. But are there true prophets? We can extend the question by asking can there be true prophets and what need is there for them if the Scriptures are complete? When we assert that there are divinely inspired prophets today, we affirm that God's word is incomplete and requires additional revelation. Such a position poses a most serious problem, and flies in the face of what the Bible says about itself. See, for example, 2 Timothy 3:16,17. ....... Ephesians 4:11 has been suggested in this thread as a "proof text" in support of the continuation of true prophets from Apostolic times down to the present time. But this text does not support such an assumption, nor does any other passage in the New Testament. ....... There are true prophets today, yes, but not in the sense of being foretellers of the future. There is another sense in which the word is frequently used in Scripture, and that is forth-tellers. In our time those who proclaim the gospel of Christ as it is revealed in the word of God are in fact forth-tellers or prophets. ...... I'd like to close this post by recommending an article by John MacArthur in which he exegetes Ephesians 4:11 as well as sets down an excellent biblically-based exposition of the subject of apostles and prophets. Please note how the Amplified Bible renders Ephesians 4:11 ,,,,,,, Perhaps you and Bloodwashed and others could profit from a study of this article by John MacArthur. 52 | how do i become a pastor | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 209713
Imoulton: In the main, the educational requirements for a pastor are laid down by the denomination or by the local church. There are pastors who have a doctorate in theology and there are others who have never seen the insides of a seminary. --Hank

meta, sorry you chose to feel offended at a short post that was written seven years before you registered on Study Bible Forum and directed not to you but to someone else you probably never heard of. It seems incredible that a beginner on the Forum would choose to post a tirade against someone he doesn't know, about something that doesn't concern him that was written in a seven-year-old post. The idea of Study Bible Forum is not to search through the archives and drag up something to be disagreeable about. The users of this Forum who get on well are those who contribute worthwhile, Bible-based posts that teach and edify. Telling someone to "get a life" has always struck me as being particularly contentious and presumputous. There are registrants here who have been active on this Forum since its beginning in 2001, one of whom is the person you told to "get a life, His life." It can be very annoying to others when a new registrant comes on and starts dishing out advice right off the bat. For example, I happen to know that the person you told to "get a life, His life" has been a regenerate believer in Jesus Christ for years. He does not need your advice. Think about it and please enhance your understanding of what this Forum is all about by studying the terms of use and applying them to your contributions to it. The longer you stay around and the more you know about Study Bible Forum and its people, the more inclined you will likely be to see your own need for Christian growth and your own limitations in dishing out advice to others. --Hank
55 | normal insecurities? | Song 1:6 | Hank | 209522
Dear truthckr2, thanks for your question and welcome. The Shulammite maiden in Song 1:6 was self-conscious of her appearance obviously, but that is not the same thing as being selfish or self-centered. Her step-brothers had made her caretaker of the vineyards, and her skin was burned and darkened by exposure to the sun. She may have been shy, coy, or even a bit coquettish in a winsome sort of way, but selfish? No, that doesn't seem quite the fitting word to describe this maiden. She explains that because of her duties in her relatives' vineyard, she has not taken care of her own vineyard, by which she means her personal appearance. ..... I'm not sure what you mean when you speak of the "normal side of this and the evil side," so I'm unable to respond to that segment of your question. --Hank
56 | What does God owe the Devil? | Luke 4:6 | Hank | 209519
Dear Finder :: Your question is an excellent one and how I wish I could render an excellent answer to it! The problem of evil is a subject which laymen and theologians alike have pondered over down through the years, only to conclude that man is limited indeed when he seeks to know fully the mind of the infinite, transcendent God. ...... But God has revealed in His word much about evil, Satan, the fall of man and the way to redemption. I believe you will find an article at the web site, gotquestions.org, particularly helpful. Here's the URL: http://www.gotquestions.org/God-vs-Satan.html ..... While you are at this web site, you may wish to poke around among a large number of articles on evil, Satan, the fall of man, sin, redemption, etc. Just use their search engine to explore the site. I've found this web site to be handy, useful, doctrinally and theologically sound, and user friendly. I hope you like it and receive from it at least a measure of help with your question. The editors frequently recommend some excellent resource materials for those would like to delve deeper into various subjects. --Hank
57 | Crucified with Christ | Gal 2:20 | Hank | 209505
Dear Kcabml4 :: Many thanks for your questions, mein Herr. Actually I am more of a student of Doc than he of me. And even if I were Doc's teacher back when the post you refer to was written, he has long since surpassed me, as Plato surpassed his teacher Socrates. Let's do this: let me ask Doc to respond to your questions. It will give you another, different, perspective on the subjects and, besides that, will almost surely be an improvement on anything I could do. I'll contact Doc and see whether I can talk him into doing both of us the favor of responding to you. --Hank
58 | Changing my skin color | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 209502
Dear bermudianchristian :: Thanks for sharing your thoughts. While not specifically biblically oriented, in a broader sense they perhaps are. My guess -- please set me straight if I've wrong -- is that you are a young person. This thing that has been called "the herd instinct" is especially strong among young folks -- everybody wants to be, think, do, and look like his peers. This usually passes with time. ..... When I read your post, my mind went back nearly 50 years to an experience I had when I was in the U.S. Army. For a time I was attached to a medical unit at an Army hospital in Aurora, Colorado and there met a fine old gentleman, a patient at the hospital, who was a black man. His skin color was not brown but quite black. His hair was as white as snow, his teeth white and even, his smile engaging, his voice resonant -- in short, he was a strikingly handsome man for his age. I visited him on several occasions. He was gentle, wise, and seemed to enjoy our visits very much. We talked of many things as we sat in our comfortable chairs basking in the sun on the spacious lawn that surrounded the hospital building. The years have erased the memory of the content of most of those pleasant conversations but this much remains. One day this kind old gentlemen observed that people should be content with the gifts the Lord has given them and thank Him for life itself and all its wonders and marvels. Then he said something like this: "You know, I think it's so foolish that black people want to straighten their hair and bleach their skin trying to turn it white. And white people want to curl their hair and bake their skin in the sun for hours trying to turn it dark." ..... Now I'll close with a verse of Scripture: "Not that I speak in respect of want, but I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content" (Philippians 4:11). May God richly bless you. --Hank
59 | more than one gospel? | 2 Tim 2:15 | Hank | 209442
"...WOF movement much more dangerous" ..... I think so too, Brad -- WOF and this "emerging church" business. That's pretty wild. ...... If we have any of this brand of "dispensationalist churches" in my neck of the woods, I've been blissfully unaware of them. I think sometimes I must wear blinds around my eyes, like a horse does, and therefore see only the church I attend and miss what's happening in all the rest. --Hank
60 | more than one gospel? | 2 Tim 2:15 | Hank | 209438
Truthseeker68 :: (1) WHO: Who are these dispensationalists? .....(2) WHAT: What do "they" believe? ..... (3) WHY: Why do you call their beliefs heretical? ..... (4) HOW: How do you propose to "call them out? ...... Thus far all I've read is a rant against this nebulous, staw-man army of supposed heretics. Let's examine the teaching of Scripture on this topic or else drop the issue. A general tirade against presumed heretics really does no good. Talk to us about what the word of God teaches and we will be much more likely to listen to you. --Hank
