41 | What evangelist ran to meet an official | Acts 8:26 | Sir Pent | 116992
Answer and a question................................................ Welcome to the forum JaniceTillman, The answer to your question is Philip, and the story can be found in Acts 8:26-40. I also have a question for you. You have posted 7 times to the forum, and they have all been questions. None of them seem to be related. Why are you asking these questions? It gives the appearance that you have a list of questions (ie. a test for a Bible class), and are just using this forum to save you the effort of searching. Do I guess correctly? |

43 | How Do You Stay on Track? | Ps 23:3 | Sir Pent | 116967
Personal Note........................................................ Hi Hank, There are many verses that give me a great deal of comfort and assurance of God's providence. My favorite is Romans 8:28 "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." A second is Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." A third is 1 Corinthians 10:13 "...God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it." A fourth is Philippians 1:6 "For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus." A final one is Genesis 50:20 "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive." |

44 | pornography....... | 2 Tim 2:22 | Sir Pent | 116914
Wise quote from another............................................. Hello Angst33, A wise person once said on this forum "Smoking is just another way that we fill a need for ourselves. This is idolatry - we become the source (through whatever means) of fufilling our needs. That is exactly what god wants to do." I would say that the same thing is true of pornography. It is a substitute to fill a need in your life. I would think that the best way to stop using it is to allow God to meet your needs so that there is no reason to look at it anymore. I would also recommend that you join a small group at your church and ask them to help keep you accountable by asking you on a weekly basis how you are doing in that area of your life. P.S. For those of you who wonder who the wise person I quoted was, it was none other than Angst33, themself :) |

48 | can you sleep with a non christian boy? | 2 Tim 2:22 | Sir Pent | 116613
My answer............................................................ Hello Clem, You should not sleep in a bed with a person of the opposite gender unless you are married to them. That would be true whether the other person is a Christian or not. As a Christian, you are a representative of Jesus and an example to the world. What kind of testimony will you be giving if you are known to sleep in bed with this boy? Would Jesus sleep in a bed with a girl? Clearly, He would not. What is your motivation? Why would you want to do this anyway? |

Try to compare apples to apples..................................... Hello again Ptgard05, You are correct that there are more homosexuals than kleptomaniacs. However, there are many more people committing adultery than there are homosexuals. So don't belittle Hank's post by picking and choosing. |

50 | read last statement | Rom 1:27 | Sir Pent | 116567
I'll answer your question, will you answer mine?................. Hello again Ptgard05, Your post about your relative was written after mine, however, I have read it now. I understand that you believe your relative to be honest, but that does not change the fact that his claims and personal experience have not been proven in respected scientific literature. Now how about my question. Since science is not definite on the issue, why do you question the Bible which is definite? Do you doubt the word of God because of the word of your relative? |

51 | How many yrs was promised to us to live? | Gen 6:3 | Sir Pent | 116549
My answer......................................................... Welcome to the forum Escottl, I think that the verse you are looking for is Genesis 6:3. It speaks of God lowering the normal lifespan of humans to 120 years. Although this is shorter than some of the lifespans of the first people, it is still longer than the "three scores" that you mentioned, which would only be 60 years. |

52 | i do believe..but this troubles me | Rom 1:27 | Sir Pent | 116521
My perspective as a scientist...................................... Hello Ptgard05, In you post you mentioned that the Bible condemns homosexuality. You also said that you believe that science has proven that homosexuals are born that way. Finally you correctly say that God wouldn't condemn someone for something that they were forced into from birth. That only leaves two possibilities. Either the Bible does not really condemn homosexuality (which you seem to be hoping and trying to prove), or people are not really born in such a way that they are forced to commit homosexual acts. It is interesting that you seem to doubt your understanding of the Bible more than you doubt your understanding of science. I am a scientist with my degree in Chemistry/Biology, and I work in research and development at a biotech company. I have also been a Christian for a very long time. Speaking with experience in both areas, I can say with confidence that you are correct in your understanding of the Bible and incorrect in your understanding of the science. |

55 | A distinction without a difference? | 1 Cor 12:10 | Sir Pent | 116339
A defense of "reformed" forum members......................... Let me begin by a few disclaimers: I do not agree with "reformed" theology, but rather fall into the Arminianist theological camp. I do not support needless forum dissention, but rather accept that it is healthy to have honest discussion from varying perspectives. I do not desire for this to discussion to be a stumbling block for those on the forum who are less mature, which is why I am posting it in this restricted thread. I do not mean to pick on the respected forum members (Morant61, Ray, Emmaus, and Hank) mentioned in this post. I am only trying to point out some observations purely as examples. Now to the defense: There seems to be 3 main criticisms of certain "reformed" members of our forum. 1 - The person is too argumentative 2 - The person is posting too much on the same subject 3 - The person is posting on a subject that is denominationally divisive The first point is the easiest. Whether a person is too argumentative is a very subjective thing. It often appears very differently depending on whether we agree with the person or not. I think that it is probably possible to make a case that anyone who has posted more than 200 times on this forum has been too argumentative at times. This is not a good reason to ban a person. The second point is also relatively easy. Each forum member has their own personal interest in certain aspects of Christianity and Bible Study. They naturally tend to focus on these areas in their posts. For instance, Morant61 has over 500 posts containing a derivative of the word "Greek". This is not a bad thing. It merely means that he has a strong interest in the original languages that the Bible was written in. Ray has over 600 posts containing a derivative of the word "Capital". This is also not a bad thing. It merely reflects his own personal study on which words in the Bible should be capitalized out of reverence to God. A large number of posts, or even a large percentage of a forum member's posts (30 percent in Ray's case), should not be grounds for kicking someone off the forum. The last point is the hardest to defend, due to the fact that the Forum clearly states a rule banning denominationally divisive subjects. There are certain members of this forum who believe one way on a particular doctrine of Christianity and others who fall in the opposing camp. The problem is that this forum seems to be inconsistent in its behavior towards the inevitable conflicts that therefore arise. Some topics that are denominationally divisive are allowed. For instance, Emmaus has posted almost 500 times containing a derivative of the word "Catholic". There is a lot of dissention between Catholics and Protestants, yet no one criticizes Emmaus. And if any topic has caused discord on the forum it would be "Cain's wife". Hank has posted almost 100 times with a derivitive of Cain, which has become his personal running joke. Yet although almost none of these posts contain any scripture, no one criticizes Hank. Therefore, it seems that the only denominationally divisive topic that is banned from discussion is that of the reformed perspective. This doesn't seem to be fair basis for kicking a forum member out either. |

58 | Last part of Jonah | Jon 4:10 | Sir Pent | 116323
My answer........................................................ Welcome to the forum Eggeland, God sends a prophet named Jonah to go preach to an evil city named Nineveh. Jonah tells the people there that God will destroy them because of their wickedness. The people of Nineveh beg God to forgive them and they stop doing the evil things. God mercifully decides to not destroy them after all. Jonah is very angry about this because he hates the people of Nineveh and wanted them to be destroyed. At the end of the book, Jonah has left the city of Nineveh and is waiting to see if the city of Nineveh will be destroyed after all. One day, God causes a plant to grow very quickly beside Jonah to give him shade and coolness. This makes Jonah very happy (Jon 4:6). Then God sends a worm to kill the plant, taking away Jonah's shade and making Jonah very upset (Jon 4:7-9). God then uses this as a lesson to teach Jonah why he spared the people of Nineveh. God points out that Jonah cared about the plant even though he hadn't invested any work to make it grow. How much more then does God care about the people of Nineveh (and all people), who he created and sustained (implied in: Jon 4:10-11). Because God loves people so much, that is why He wants to forgive them when they truly repent (Jon 4:2). |

59 | Does the Holy Spirit work differently? | Bible general Archive 2 | Sir Pent | 115001
Is Option #3 the only difference................. The third option is definitely true. The Holy Spirit did come to less people in the Old Testament than it came to people in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, it was a rarity for the Holy Spirit to come to a person, and was limited mainly to prophets, kings, and other important people. In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit comes to all who believe in Jesus Christ. But is this the only difference? Does anyone have any ideas for more options? |

60 | Does the Holy Spirit work differently? | Bible general Archive 2 | Sir Pent | 115000
The problem with Option #2........................ The second option is also commonly accepted. Many people believe that the Holy Spirit came temporarily to people of the OT, and come permanently to people of the NT and even today. The problem is that I am unaware of which scriptures this idea comes from. Any ideas? |
