45 | why is this woman likened to a dog? | Mark 7:27 | Shelly | 128563
The NIV Study Bible notes says (on Mark 7:27-28): 'Dog' refers to little dogs or house pets, not outdoor scavengers. Jesus was saying that his first priority was to provide food for the children (teach his disciples), not to allow pets to interrupt the family meal. The woman did not try to argue. Using Jesus' choice of imagery, she pointed out that she was willing to be considered an interruption as long as she could receive God's healing for her daughter. Ironically, many Jews would lose God's spiritual healing because they rejected Jesus, while many Gentiles, whom the Jews rejected, would find salvation because they recognized Jesus. |

59 | What was the day of penecost? | Acts 2:1 | Shelly | 116960
NIV Study Bible notes: Acts 2:1 Held 50 days after Passover, Pentecost was also called the Feast of Weeks. It was one of three major annual feasts (Deut. 16:16), a festival of thanksgiving for the harvested crops. Jesus was crucified at Passover time, and he ascended 40 days after his resurrection. The Holy Spirit came 50 days after the resurrection, ten days after the ascension. Jews of many nations gathered in Jerusalem for this festival. Thus Peter's speech (2:14 ff) was given to an international audience, and it resulted in a worldwide harvest of new believers--the first converts to Christianity. |
