41 | Is Christmas wrong...... | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 210089
Dear Hancock :: The remembrance of the "Christmas Story" from the Gospels is never wrong at any season of the year. When I was but a boy, I committed to memory the "Christmas Story" that Luke told so beautifully in Luke 2:1-20. For years I've gathered my children -- and now my grand-children too -- around the fireplace at Christmastime and recited this passage from Luke's Gospel in the majestic words of the King James Version. ..... But what the world means by Christmas is another thing. It is what C. S. Lewis used to call "the commercial claptrap." Lewis also used to lament that dreadful business of having to exchange gifts, which was more out of habit and custom than anything else. He observed that perfectly rational people would actually buy some useless trinket for a friend but they would never think of buying anything quite so absurd for themselves. ...... Your question has to do with whether it's wrong for Chrstians to celebrate Christmas. That depends in large measure upon which Christmas we celebrate, it seems to me. Do we put our emphasis on Santa Claus or on Jesus Christ? Are we more agog about what gifts we hope to get than about the gift of His Son that God has already given us? ...... Every year we hear someone remind us that He is the reason for the season. We hear it so often, in fact, that we may cease to listen to it. Yes, it's a trite saying, tired and worn out, and yet it doesn't hurt us to listen to it once more. He IS the reason for the season. ...... So let me wish you a Merry Christmas in the best possible sense of the term. --Hank
42 | A difficult question | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 210459
Hi, COG :: If you are serious enough about this subject to invest a few dollars of your money and quite a few hours of your time, pick up a copy of Josh McDowell's "The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict." Published by Thomas Nelson, the book is still in print and can be purchased at religious bookstores and online. With its 760 pages, this book is no wimp. It tackles hard questions such as "Is the Bible historically reliable? Is the Bible from God?" ...And much, much more. ...... I've enjoyed the book enormously and find myself turning back to it periodically in order to refresh my mind on certain questions. And I believe you will enjoy it too. ...... For a postscript, I'll say that the subject that you've broached is of such enormity and scope that no "crash course" or cursory reading is likely to do much good, certainly not a response so necessarily brief as a post on Study Bible Forum must needs be. That's why I recommend this hefty book. And it just happens to be one of the best contemporary books on the subject that I've come across. So please buy it, read it, study it, and I truly do believe, you'll be the richer for having done so. An avid reader for many years, I always feel slightly robbed when I invest my time and money in a book only to find it wasn't very good and hardly deserved the investment I made in it. But I don't think you'll feel cheated when you buy and read "The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict." I certainly haven't felt short-changed by it! --Hank
43 | Prayer Request from My Family | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 212025
Dear Skccab (Cheri) : Although it's true that this is a Bible study forum (you don't really need to be reminded of that), there is no earthly reason why an occasional urgent request for prayer should not be honored. This company of believers should deem it a privilege, it seems to be, to engage in intercessory prayer on behalf of you and your friend who is gravely ill. You have been an active member of this forum for quite a while and many of us consider you as "family" now. so the last thing I'd want to see is your sincere prayer request being summarily dismissed and your being essentially ignored on this forum. Of course, I'll pray for your friend Stanley and for you, Cheri, and take comfort in the belief that other Christians on this forum will do likewise. ..... I do want to emphize, however, that the thrust of SBF is Bible study, so by and large it's better to channel prayer requests through other web sites that are designed for prayer requests and capable of handling a large volume of them. Study Bible Forum simply isn't. --Hank

Dear Messenger : You have not asked a question but have made a series of statements, the point and direction of which I do not know. While it is recognized that this was your initial post to the Forum -- to which I bid you welcome -- you are encouraged to make sure that you understand and follow its guideline as stated in the links cited beneath the "Information" section on the left column of the home page. --Hank

Dear Elhar - There is considerable variation from communion to communion in how members are received as well as in how membership may be terminated. Your question is rather general. Would you like to make it more specific? --Hank
46 | I want my wife back | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 157261
Mark, let me add my firm support to those who have urged you to seek counsel. Your pastor or other qualified Christian adviser may be able to help you and your wife mend the breach. What's done is done and we can't unscramble an egg, but that does not mean the egg is worthless and should be thrown away. --Hank
47 | doctrinally unsound? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 157656
Uma: I wonder whether anyone sees anything unsound or confusing in the following "news item," which is composed of several sentences extracted verbatim from several articles that appeared on the front page of this morning's edition of my hometown newspaper, The Times Record: "Timmons is an associate professor at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith. The churches are really acting like churches. For people to vote a tax increase is always a push. More than 630 school-age children who escaped to Arkansas in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina have enrolled in the state's public schools. The Quorum Court is considering an expansion of the current jail." ..... These excerpts from one page of a newspaper are out of context, they are non sequiturs, they don't make sense, and can even invite false and ridiculous conclusions; as if, for example, the enrollment of 630 children from the Gulf Coast had something to do with the expansion of the local jail! ...... Now, if we can take snippets from a newspaper and put them together in a collage in such a way that they become absurd, misleading, and even comic -- and we can and I just did -- then what is to keep us from walking all over God's word in such a crass and outrageous manner? .... There are some 39 Shakespearean plays extant. One could select a line or two from King Lear, from Hamlet, from Romeo and Juliet, from Julius Caesar, or from any of the 35 other plays, and by careful manipulation make up any number of absurd "doctrines" from the Bard. But is this sort of adulteration of his works fair to Shakespeare or fair to the readers of such out-of-context quotations? Of course it isn't. Yet hardly a day goes by that one doesn't see on this Forum a scissors job being done to the Bible in some vain effort to prove a point or tout a false teaching. ..... How many times have some of us who contribute regularly to the Forum stressed context...context...context! ..... It's odd indeed that some of the very folks who can readily see my ridiculous error in pulling lines from a newspaper out of context think nothing of doing it with Scripture. --Hank
48 | List Nasb departures from Hebrew text? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 157975
PeterAV, inasmuch as the NASB is a very literal translation, it is doubtful that it ever actually departs from the Hebrew text. This, however, is a question for the scholars who translated it. --Hank

51 | will going to church get me to heaven? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 158832
Dave: The term "going to church" is such a misnomer! It follows the same error as calling a building the church. The church is the body of Christ and is composed of all the redeemed in Christ. So in a real sense nobody "goes to church." We who are individual members of the body of Christ do assemble in community for the purposes of worship, instruction, the breaking of bread and prayer. Christ saves. We are saved by grace through faith in Him. Read the book of Acts. You won't find in it a single example of any regenerate believer who cloistered himself in a cave and absented himself from the fellowship of the saints. He who inclines to drum up excuses for not attending worship services on the grounds that this will not keep him out of heaven has a decidely myopic view of what the church is all about. If everyone thought as he thinks, local churches would become extinct. You figure the consequences of that! --Hank

54 | idle mine is thedevil work shop | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 159342
Bennett: Generally rendered, "Idle hands (not minds) are the devil's workshop," this quotation has been traced back to Chaucer who lived in the 14th century. It became associated with the philosophy of the Shakers, a religious movement in America during the 1800's. It is not a quote found in Scripture. --Hank

59 | iS THE u.s. MENTIONED IN BIBLE PROFACY | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 160459
flm1964 -- Thanks for your question and first post. Welcome. The United States is not mentioned in Scripture, nor "hinted at" in Bible prophecy, at least not to my knowledge and belief. One always should be extremely cautious in "reading into Scripture" what isn't there (called eisegesis). The Apocalyptic Literature of the Bible and matters pertaining to eschatology are deep waters in which even the "experts" often find themselves over their heads. I talked to a fine scholar one time who had made the book of the Revelation his object of special study. He told me he'd studied it for a quarter century but disavowed any claim to mastery of the book. Unfortunately, on the other hand, we see from time to time a whiz-kid buzz by who has skimmed through a couple of chapters of apocalyptic Scripture and would have you believe he knows more about eschatology than the Apostle John himself. --Hank
60 | Purgatory and Priest | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 160679
Hi, Jayell. Your first question is about confessing to priests. The Bible says that we are to confess our sins to God (1 John 1:9). The Catholic practice is based on tradition. ..... Your second question is about purgatory. There is absolutely no mention of purgatory in the Bible. The Catholic concept of purgatory comes from one of the Apocryphyal books, 2 Maccabees. --Hank
