34865 | Why not sentences | Rev 22:18 | Asis | 97009
Scripture is laid out ion verses. This was done by someone after the Bible was complete. Why aren't the verses laid out in the incremental units of language called sentences. Some are complete sentences some are not. How can we get the meaning of a scripture without looking at the whole sentence that contains it. Is there a reason that scripture is broken up the way it is or was it abritrarily done? In a recent post Philip. 2:6-8 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: [7] But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: [8] And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. [KJV] But the sentence begins with verse 5 . .. .Philip. 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: [KJV] When this portion of the writers thought is included, doesn't it affect the meaning of the whole? I was just wondering why the bible is broken down in the way it is instead of sentences. Webster Dictionary says of a sentence. 4 a : a word, clause, or phrase or a group of clauses or phrases forming a syntactic unit which expresses an assertion, a question, a command, a wish, an exclamation, or the performance of an action, that in writing usually begins with a capital letter and concludes with appropriate end punctuation, and that in speaking is distinguished by characteristic patterns of stress, pitch, and pauses b : a mathematical or logical statement (as an equation or a proposition) in words or symbols. So why not split the Bible up into complete thoughts instead of partial thoughts? Anybody know why? |

34866 | Please I'm looking for your opinion! | Rev 22:18 | EdB | 101989
I was sent this yesterday and I found it interesting. I thought I would post it to the forum for comments. Plese read this and tell me what us what you think on this subject. "I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH." MATTHEW 16:18 The church's all-time biggest blunders is never too late to learn from our blunders. Here are 7: (1) We've made unbelief a doctrine. While third-world nations believe God for New Testament results, we teach our seminary students that God doesn't do miracles anymore. (2) We've tolerated division. Who needs the devil when we're so adept at hating one another in the name of denominational loyalty? (3) We've cultivated a religious spirit. We've taught that Christianity is about avoiding things like smoking and drinking. As a result we've lost our joy, because intimacy with God cannot be achieved through performance. (4) We've encouraged "super stars. " Consequently, some of our preachers have stopped modeling servanthood, and forgotten that Jesus washed feet and rode on a donkey. (5) We've equated money with success. We've found a way to "theologize" greed, instead of using our God-given prosperity to feed the poor and reach the world with the Gospel. (6) We've stayed in the pews and become irrelevant. We freak out when somebody uses rap or rock music to reach the younger generation. Instead of engaging the culture we're hiding from it. (7) We've taught people to be escape-artists. Instead of "occupying till He comes," we'd rather be astronauts and fly away. We read rapture novels when we should be praying for those living on the verge of martyrdom. Why can't we have their kind of faith? We can - if we're willing to pay the price and commit ourselves fully to God! |

34870 | Why do some sermons misrepresent truth? | Rev 22:18 | Gilderd | 145531
Why do so many preachers exaggerate their sermons? They misquote the Bible by using trite sayings in place of actual references. For example, they say Jesus said, “where two or MORE are gathering in My Name, there I am in the midst of them”, when in fact Jesus said where two or THREE. They claim Samson was muscular and only one boar and one sow were on the ark. Does God ignore these blatant lies, or is He as upset as I get hearing such outlandish misrepresentations of truth? Have YOU noticed such in your churches too? Thank you for being honest in your responses. Gilderd |

34872 | Why so many Bibles? | Rev 22:18 | Md1234 | 166654
Why are there so many versions of the Bible. When I was a child everyone had the same bible. Today you can't read along with ministers in many occasions because you may not have the particular version he is using. I visit a lot of different denominal and non denominal churches with our gospel singing group and I find it frustrating not to be able to read along. Someone that didn't know anything about the bible and not been to church much may not know what to believe. Whatever happened to Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever. Or not adding to or taking away from the word of God. Is this not what man is doing when they change things around so much?
