34645 | Who wrote the letter to the Hebrews? | Hebrews | stobor | 1094
Who wrote this letter? My old AV calls Hebrews "The Epistle of Paul to the Hebrews," but no one seems to ascribe it to Paul anymore. I have heard Barnabas suggested as the author, and seem to recall the argument was convincing (but I didn't take any notes). Is anyone aware of sound reasons to ascribe this letter to one particular author? |

"And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax-gatherer." Matthew 18:17 "And if anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that man and do not associate with him, so that he may be put to shame." II Thessalonians 3:14 Does this mean to 'disfellowship' or 'excommunicate' a brother? As in cutting him off permanently from all communication and fellowship? |

34649 | why did God create the world | Gen 1:1 | wdc | 1061
Something I've been thinking about for a while. God is all knowing, and a loving, merciful God. So He knew all the suffering, pain, and evil that would happen in the world. Why then did He create it in the first place and put mankind on it. Why not just not create it, if He had not created it, we would have never none it, and look at all the suffering and evil that would have been avoided. Anyone have any thoughts? wdc

34652 | Is any type of contraception allowed? | Bible general Archive 1 | JMR | 1043
What does the Bible say about contraception? Is it against using any type of contraception? Does the Bible allow us to use any method or methods of contraception? My personal beliefs on this is that we are not allowed to use any type of contraception. I think my beliefs are biblically based however. Am I wrong in thinking this way? Please give biblical references with your response. Thanks! :-)
34653 | Denying the Master | 2 Peter | stephanos | 1033
I have been studying the Biblical doctrine of election for approximately 5 - 6 years now. The main area of this doctrine that I'm trying to understand and interpret properly (because many have not) is the subject of eternal security. There are many verses that are used by many to support the belief of "conditional security." One that has intrigued me the most is 2 Peter 2:1- key words being "Master" and "bought." I have found that "Master" in Greek is "despotes" in this verse, as opposed to "kurios" - the two being quite different in meaning. But "bought" (agorazo) has me a little stumped. I am a strong advocate in the Biblical doctrine of eternal security. So I know that a verses like this require diligence in studying and proper hermeneutics. Can anyone give some feedback on this passage? [I am in no way an Arminian, neither do I consider myself a Calvinist. Notice how I termed it "Biblical doctrine of election." I have a few Calvinist friends and know of many others who tend to put more emphasis on John Calvin and his "tulip" than the pure Word.] |

34658 | When is a plumb line true? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 980
When is a plumb line true? "And the Lord said to me, "What do you see, Amos?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "Behold I am about to put a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel. I will spare them no longer."" Amos 7:8 To answer my own question, a plumb line, according to a carpenter or a plumber is true when it stops moving. It is swayed by wind (empty breath, not the Spirit) and swayed by an unsteady foundation. It seems to me that "...let God be found true, though every man be found a liar..." ROM 3:4 speaks of a plumb line working in the church today. Nobody can claim to be 'right.' Not Calvinists, Arminists, Catholics, Charismatics, not anyone. Not even Baptists :-) It is our job to stop the swinging, through rational discussion, mutual respect, a sincere desire for understanding, and conviction of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Bible is a gift from God, given to assist us in this quest, not confirm OUR thoughts or traditions. Any answer that is from God will be simple, and carry authority, Just like Jesus answered the Jews. Personal rancor, prejudice, arrogance and stubbornness do not become us, although, I must admit, it is very entertaining at times :-) Overall, I am very blessed by this forum, and honored to participate. Let us all endeavor to find 'true' by arresting the 'swings' of flesh and soul, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Love and blessings in Jesus' name. |
