343 | The word "Bible" | Matt 1:1 | Hank | 178965
Hello, Justme - The English word 'bible,' not unlike many other English words, has a long and interesting etymology, as Doc has noted. But the word is not applied only to the sacred Scriptures of Christians but to any publication that is preeminent, especially in authoritativeness, such as "the fisherman's bible." Now it strikes one as being a bit odd that a secular work, e.g., a fisherman's bible, would be considered authoritative and its content rarely challenged, if indeed challenged at all, while busy-bodied fools of every generation have pecked at the Holy Bible like chickens pecking at grains of corn in a vain effort to prove it false. They, many of them have already passed away, and all who follow them will in turn pass away, but praise be to God, the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endureth to all generations (cf. Psalm 100:5). ...... Good to hear from you once again, Justme. I pray that you are well. --Hank
344 | doesn't god know all there is to know? | Ps 48:10 | Hank | 178904
rckeel - If you will carefully and laboriously ponder the following passages and compare them to the passage in 2 Chronicles 32:31, perhaps you will gain a greater understanding of the doctrine of God as revealed in His word. Here are the passages, to some of which I've parenthetically inserted an occasional remark: Deut. 8:2 ..... Gen. 3:9 (did not God know the answer to His question to Adam, "Where art thou?") ..... Gen. 3:11 (do you suppose He who created the universe ex nihilo would be ignorant of whether Adam had eaten of the forbidden tree?) ..... And in the Book of Job you will find a remarkable thing. The omniscient God asks his servant job a grand total of 83 questions, 39 in Job 38 alone. All 83 questions are recorded in Job 38:1-41:34. Do you for a moment believe that God was asking Job all those questions for the purpose of adding to His own knowledge -- or did He have some other purpose in view? Obviously Job was stumped by God's questions; he couldn't answer a single one of them. The significant thing about these questions, first of all, is that Job didn't have a clue what the answers were. And the second thing is that God is driving home the point, in a way that Job could understand, that Job must resign himself to letting God be God, the sovereign omnipotent, omniscient and transcendent Creator who answers to no one. ...... John Calvin is on record as saying that God often talks to His people in baby talk. The Bible is replete with examples of this -- from earthy parables to anthropomorphisms -- which God chose as vehicles by which to reveal Himself to mankind in ways they can comprehend. ..... But let us never think of God Almighty as being anything less than absolutely sovereign and absolutely omniscient. "O LORD, you have searched me and known me: You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O LORD, You know it altogether" (Psalm 139:1-4). --Hank
345 | Were Noah's sons triplets or born sepera | Gen 5:32 | Hank | 178901
rckeel - Thanks for your question. Shem, Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, were not triplets. Japheth was the oldest (Gen. 10:21) and Ham the youngest (Gen. 9:22-24). --Hank
346 | Elders who cower to pastors | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 178813
Bereaniam - From your continuing reports, it sounds as though the church where you worship has more problems than a giraffe with strep throat! Don't you find it difficult to function as a Christian should in such an environment where you are in a more or less constant stew about how things are going? Have you considered looking for another church? It can be done. I did it. And found one, too! It was one of the few smart things I ever did. --Hank
347 | Is it true we should put spouse b4 child | Gen 1:1 | Hank | 178747
kriss - Chapters 5 and 6 of Paul's Letter to the Ephesians addresses family relationships. Therein you will find biblical instruction to husbands, wives and children; and perhaps the answer to your question. --Hank
348 | Baptism and defacto elationships | Acts 2:38 | Hank | 178512
CB - Doc has given a splendid response in Post 178503, which I endorse without reservation. In no wise would I baptize this fornicating couple who obviously don't take the word of God seriously. It is repentence they need right now -- and perhaps regeneration -- not baptism. The key issue is what the Bible teaches about immorality -- and on the issue of fornication the teaching is as clear as it can possibly be -- and not what various age groups think about it. --Hank
349 | Baptism and defacto elationships | Acts 2:38 | Hank | 178418
cb - One can guess, but perhaps you should define what you mean by "de facto relationship." And it is essential that you fully understand the biblical definition of "repent." If you don't, please include that fact in your revised question, assuming you wish to revise and resubmit your question. --Hank
350 | Who created God? | Gen 1:1 | Hank | 178247
K - A follow-up on my previous answer and a footnote to Jeff Hetrick's excellent Bible-referenced response. The "Who made God" question is a textbook example of the compound question fallacy which occurs when one ignores questions that should be asked first. For example, "Have you stopped beating your spouse?" is fallacious when it has not been established that one has ever beaten one's spouse. Similarly, "Who made God" is fallacious because it presupposes the prior question which should be asked, "Is God a created being?" And Scripture no where remotely suggests that God is a created being but is in fact Himself the Creator of all things. See the opening chapters of Genesis and the opening chapter of John's Gospel. ..... If God were a created being, then who created God? Let's say for the sake of argument that it was a being called Pinauk. Then who created Pinauk? Let's say Pinauk's creator was a being named Manikel. Then who created Manikel? If Pinauk created God, then Pinauk must be God. But Manikel created Pinauk, so Manikel must be God. And round and round we go with this faulty reasoning that gets us absolutely no where. ...... Questions such as "Who made God" are such as are typically asked by the very young. How old are you? --Hank
351 | name and claim.. is it Biblical? | 2 Tim 2:15 | Hank | 178237
hesees - Context! Context! Context! The Bible is to be studied as a unified and progressive revelation of God to mankind. Thus context is vitally important. The "golden rule" to follow in the study of God's word was laid down by the apostle Paul to young Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:15: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth." ..... This approach to the word of truth is no less applicable to followers of Christ today than it was to Timothy some two thousand years ago. ..... Plucking a verse here and there at random without regard to context is a risky business. Cults and false teachers frequently fall prey to this error and thereby lead countless numbers of people astray. --Hank
352 | Who created God? | Gen 1:1 | Hank | 178236
K - God is eternal, the Creator, not the created. See Genesis 1:1, John 1:1, Deut. 33:27, Is. 9:6, Rom. 6:26, 1 Tim. 1:17. --Hank
353 | Does the Bible predict Christianity? | Luke 18:8 | Hank | 177898
Aspilos - Before His ascension, the risen Christ gathered His apostles together and this is what He told them: "You will receive power (see Acts 2) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." As the Book of Acts unfolds, one can see plainly that this is exactly what happened and the way it happened -- in the exact geographical and chronological order that Jesus foretold in this passage taken from Acts 1:8. --Hank
354 | Where/How to start reading the Bible? | Ps 119:11 | Hank | 177822
J2Praise - A wonderful journey awaits the new believer as he takes his first steps in the study of God's word and begins to treasure it in his heart (see Psalm 119:11). Perhaps of lesser importance than where to begin is simply to make sure you do begin. And having begun, that you continue to immerse yourself regularly in God's word for the rest of your days on earth. ...... Here are three links that may be helpful to you. The first is an article called, "Where Is a Good Place To Start Reading the Bible?" and the link is http://www.gotquestions.org/start-reading-Bible.html ..... 355 | Is it disrespectful to not use a title | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 177735
Bereaniam - My pastor (Southern Baptist Church) does not use the "title" of reverend. He signs his correspondence Brother Dale, and in church bulletins he is referred to simply as pastor. If I were addressing a priest, I would not call him father, nor the pope holy father. --Hank
356 | Saul covering his feet/relieving himself | 1 Sam 24:3 | Hank | 177605
Tabby - "To cover his feet" is a Hebrew euphemism for the English "to go to the bathroom." Thus, modern translations, e.g. NASB, ESV, NIV, usually render the phrase, "to relieve himself." The KJV rendition of this passage is more literally accurate but not as readily understood by readers who may not be fluent in Hebrew euphemisms. --Hank

358 | Homosexual are picked on in the church? | Lev 20:13 | Hank | 177313
journey_me - What I see missing from your assessment is repentence, which involves a great deal more than saying "I'm sorry." It involves changed hearts, changed lives -- or, in today's vernacular, a change in one's lifestyle -- and this new birth in Christ can be effected solely by the work of the Holy Spirit at the moment when the penitent sinner is regenerated. I won't list the scriptural references that solidly condemn homosexuality; you probably know them already, and if not, they are readily accessible in the archives of this formum as are numerous articles on homosexuality. Simple use the search box and type in such key words as "homosexual" or "homosexuality." --Hank

KRISSEN - Post 448 written by Kalos back in 2001 treats of the issue of keeping the Sabbath. It is biblical, informative and excellently written by one of the Forum's most respected posters who, by the way, is still contributing to the Forum today. To read it simply type the number 448 in the search box. ..... As to your strained relationship with your mother, my advice is to honor her. She is your mother. See Exodus 20:12. Since you ask for honest advice, I advise you not to call your mother ignorant, not to anyone and certainly not on a public forum! This comes from a Christian man who is probably older than your mother. --Hank
