261 | Did I miss something in the text? | Bible general Archive 4 | Tamara Brewington | 203915
Thank you Doc for settling this matter. This is important information, for instance I was given a bunch of scriptures for Types of Christ in the OT, that I think are eisegesis; Israel the nation as a type for Christ - Hosea 1:11,Mathew 1:25, the Temmple of Solomon as a type for Christ - Ezekiel 11:16, 37:26, Psalm 11:42, the sacrifices of Israel as a type for Christ - Hosea 13:14, Psalm 40, the priest as a type for Christ - Psalm 110, 70, Deuteronomy 32:43, the savior as a type for Christ Numbers 20:16, Ezekiel 33:2,3, the covenant as a type for Christ - Genesis 15, 22. This is the kind of thing that was also happening in this class. Agape, Tamara

Oh Thanks a bunch Doc for the encouragement as you know I am a bit of a regular mensch and would love a very detailed follow up with attending scriputres. Which,Laugh OUT Loud, you may not have time for! But which I seriously am searching for real answers for. I have to go back to some of your links and remember to write down the specific things I am supposed to be looking for in the myriad of subjects that are there in their search engines. Today was the last day of class for the Introduction to Theology course and he said and I quote (I was careful to ask him respectfuly three times, one for each part, carefuly writing it down),"knowledge and wisdom are the basis for our faith and the basis for our salvation, the knowledge of Christ's atonement brings the wisdom that has to be believed in order to be saved, and the Law gives us knowledge and the wisdom of faith". He gave Proverbs 22:17-19 and Galatians 3:22-24. Before answering he told me to present an argument if I liked, I said I have argued this enough outside of class, I want to learn from you exactly what you are trying to teach us here. 263 | Is war biblical? | John 18:36 | Tamara Brewington | 203913
Yeah Doc, I agree that the questions posed are tough. The Romans passage was written to Christians who were going to be put to death by the Roman government. Paul knew he was proscribing obedience to an evil government, the context is clear to obey it anyway. There are other passages that tell the Christians they are called to suffering in general and specifically for Christ. Paul even said to the Romans, if he had done anything worthy of death, he would be willing to die in another passage. This Romans passage seems to be talking about internal government inside the rulership of an empire, not external government response to an opposing government. The OT is ripe with God commanding war for His own holy purposes and they were all commended for their faith in war acts. There is the concept of caring for the oppressed and standing up for the causes of the oppressed in the OT, which I have heard applied to this theory on "just war", but which the scriptures used said nothing of war. Then to complicate things one has to consider how much suffering under and unjust government is enough? Should we suffer extensively only if it is for the gospel, but not for other reasons as Christians and when do we stop turning the other cheek and for what reasons? A big problem with no "just war" would be Hitler and his program of utter world domination and destruction in which, contrary to popular belief as many or more Christians than Jews(if you believe the like of the historical forays of R.C.Sproul and one other theologian whose name I can't remember) were killed and the rest of the world's inferior were to follow. Scripture does give us a clear answer to suffer under an evil regime localy, but does not give us a clue what to do outside our borders. I am gratefull for what you presented as an answer though. 264 | Reconcile tomb accounts? | Matt 1:1 | Tamara Brewington | 203882
Dear Azure, I agree that the writers were writing with emphasis on differing aspects of the story, you are absolutely right about that part. By looking at it from that light we can deduce that there were two angels and that some writers only spoke about the one who did the speaking. And we can deduce that there was defintely a group of women, not just two or three. What can't be explained by the phenomena of writers writing form different views is the difference of Mary telling the disciples in three days or on the same day and whether or not Peter and John came the third day or the same day and whether or not Mary saw Jesus before she told the disciples the tomb was empty before or after she saw Jesus. Thanks for the link, checked it out, but it is talking about the saints who rose from the dead when Jesus died. God Bless, Tamara
265 | Is war biblical? | John 18:36 | Tamara Brewington | 203881
Say Doc, I already had a grasp of the criteria from the Reformed position on the "just war" concept. I wanted to see some scriptures other than that of Hebrews which might suppport their position. And the reason is these men of faith in Hebrews were engaging on war at God's command. I can see the concept of there being "just wars" in the OT because God commanded it. But I am trying to find out what is the scriptural basis for a "just war", or whether these theologians just extrapolated the idea based on their observations of the unjustness of tryanical rule... Help me out Doc! Thanks Tamara

268 | Reconcile tomb accounts? | Matt 1:1 | Tamara Brewington | 203874
That was interesting but does not adequately explain the various differences in days and places, or whether or not Peter and John came right away or in three days, or whether Mary saw Jesus before or after telling Peter and John the toms is empty. I was going to say that was a cute answer becuase I keep getting replies that don't realy answer the questions, but offer platitudes instead, but don't want to trivialize your answer because it applies to some of the variations, but not others... Care to give it another go? God Bless...

Yeah Doc, thanks for another link. I said Reformed or Evangelical because not all Evangelicals are Reformed! I was reading about these doctrines because of this one professor who is the source of most of those questions from Sunday (notice that most were related?. I did a bit of exegesis on one verse for the Cultural Mandate and was able to show that the verse did not support it. Which is why he countered with the supposed Mandate to use Wisdom to evangelize, for which he had absolutely no scriptures at first. But later tried to give examples of Jesus using wisdom to counter the Pharisees and the Beatitudes as the wisdom of Jesus doing evangelism to save (?), and the wisdom of the parables. saying it all leads people to God because it causes them to think and it apealed to their ability to intellectualy grasp the gospel in order to get saved.

Doc, thanks for the bit from Josephus and the link for that sermon. I hear you that Christ is on every page... The course was about theophanies of Christ and types of Christ in the OT. Trying to see still how what happened at the tower of Babel fits that criteria... See how man being sinful and trying to reach heaven without redemption has to do with Christ though.
271 | Doc about that Us and Our wrong question | Bible general Archive 4 | Tamara Brewington | 203814
Thanks Doc... Hey thanks for spending the time with a new jack, been walking in the Lord for 10 years and trying to make sure I can find the scriptures for why I believe what I believe. I am going to school for the Bible but not seminary or college. I keep pushing myself because I literaly lost my mind and got diagnosed with all kinds of stuff for two years. The only thing that would clear up my symptoms was trying to craft sermons and articles, I would stop slurring my speech and be able to think straight. I finaly threw the pills away and dedicated the whole thing to God and got completely healed no more hallucinations etc. Now that I see that the Lord God is pushing me to study I can't give it up because every time I don't I get physically sick or mentally sick, this has been ever since I got out of the hopsital in 1995. I was in there because my kidneys imploded like nova stars. I was unconscious and Jesus was there and He said to me, you have not walked with me,and you don't konw me very well, but you got saved in 1982, do you want to come home, or do you want to go back out and bring me fruit? I said I want to bring you fruit Lord Jesus. I woke up and was told I was still dying and the Nephrologist came and said I am Catholic but I believe in the blood of Jesus. Who are you? I said I am a child of the most high God and I believe in the blood of Jesus. He said then pray for a miracle because there is no donor for you, they want to cut your kidneys out and dialyze you until you die in 7 years. I don't care what your denomination is tell me why you believe. I told him what happened while I was under and that I had asked Jesus for salvation after repenting in 1982 but never read the Bible or went to church to find out about how to walk with Jesus. He told me to start reading the NT and he dialyzed the junk out for 30 days and 30 nights. On the 30th day he says you aren't making it your organs are melting go back and ask the Father what to pray. I cried and went back to the room and prayed Father in the name of Jesus what should I pray. I heard a thought, pray to the Holy Spirit, for you know not what to pray as you ought to pray. I prayed Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus what should I pray? The thought came immediately, Pray to the Father that Jesus will heal your kidneys and do God's work in your body so that you can get out of the hospital and do God's work. Now, Doc, I prayed, but doubted, but the very next morning the doctors were surrounding my bed and the Catholic Nephrologist was there. And they kept on saying this cannot be her, where is the surgical scar? And the Catholic Nephrologist said I keep on telling you, it is not possible for her kidneys to have regenerated because there were no more compartments and the blood vessels inside were almost completely gone. And I keep on saying to you that this is a real medical miracle. That morning Doc, my kidneys were miraculously healed, and I was able to get out of the hosiptal on the 40th day as if I had been on the Ark. My story is longer than this and it was a long way to full recovery. But things come in seasons and for a long time I had a season of praise in song until my voice left. And for a long time I had a season of grace giving and now I am in a season of studing that God has seemed to require of me. I do it out of love, but I also do it out of obedience to love the Lord your God with all your heart all your mind and all your soul. God bless Doc tell me your testimony sometime I have more to tell, I had a season of miracles. By the way I am a Baptist not a Pentecostal(some think I am a charismatic, but I don't)www.whatdoyoubelieve@hotmail.com Tamara
272 | Doc help me, textual criticism website? | Gen 1:21 | Tamara Brewington | 203811
I can see from going over my notes from class that my first question about wanting something on textual criticism was the right questions. I tried lookling at the Masoretic English transliteration and found it was the same as the Mamre text in its basic content. I will take your word for it that somehow the words Us and Our belong. I thank God I found someone (besides my pastor who is also one of my professors whom I bug to death, he says he doesn't mind)who is way way deeper in the word than I am... Thanks Doc God Bless, Tam
273 | Lionheart do you know this site better? | Matt 6:9 | Tamara Brewington | 203803
OK Azure, I hope you weren't offended I mistakenly though that if my answer was a question, I should say question... I am just learning how to use this site, but doesn't the blog page keep going and going, there is room, I just didn't understand about notes and questions... For instance I notice you have perhaps more blogs here than anyone else and I keep trying to find out how to follow the threads to see both the string of questions and the answers. Perhaps you can help me. whatdoyoubelieve@hotmail.com I am praying that you are not being persecuted for your faith over there and that you are allowed to actualy worship Jesus in church and hear the gospel for real... God bless you.
274 | Thank you Lionheart but where is it? | Gen 1:21 | Tamara Brewington | 203794
Lionheart, I am thinking that the writers of the Greek Septuagint, which is the Greek version of the Hebrew Torah, from which we get our 5 books of the law in the Old Testament(as opposed to the Jews who do not use the Septuagint, but the Hebrew Torah) decided to translate the words make and likeness as, let Us make, and, in Our likeness, to fit their theology that Elohim is a triune God. But my God man, that is eisegesis isn't it? We are supposed to do exegesis, pulling out of the text the real meaning, not putting into the text our impression of what it should mean. The Hebrew Alphabet didn't change from then to now, it's still the same, the translation of the Ancient Torah says the exact same thing that the Strong's says it says and the Jews never changed the language of it to fit modern times, they speak other languages now, rather than Hebrew but kept the language of their holy books intact in writing and speech from then to now. My wonderment is if the Septuagint which is the Greek translation of the Hebrew Torah, which was written by first century Christians added Us and Our to jive with their beleifs in order to make the Bible conform to those beliefs... I get what you are saying about symbology and metaphors, but Genesis as narrative is historical literature in nature and does not employ the devices of symbolism like Daniel for instance and metaphors like in the Parables for instance (although some would disagree because they don't believe what it says happened word for word and say it is metaphorical myth with symbolic language to get people to understand that God created the world somehow or other, but not that way, they don't like talking serpents and trees that kill, or death from sin). I will keep trying to discover why this ambiguity exists...
275 | How do we get saved, by baptism? | 1 Pet 3:21 | Tamara Brewington | 203714
Good answer I believe this as well, however my concern was in how to reconcile apparently conflicting scriptures;Galatians 5:4, Romans 11:2,3, I Peter 1:4,5, Romans 8:37,38, about the requirments of salvation since I am encountering folks who believe in a false doctrine based on using only one set of scriptures and not all of scripture. Feel like giving a go at reconciling these scriptures?
