241 | some people say you must speak in tongue | 1 Cor 12:4 | Ray | 144090
Hi EdB, You wrote, "When we are saved we are filled/given/baptized in the Holy Spirit, we have it all." Can we talk about the semantics of that for a minute? Later in the paragraph you said that "He is complete in us"; so the "it all" is the Holy Spirit Himself. That is what I hear jcsavs saying also, that is, that we are filled with God Himself, the Gift. Is that the general teaching of the charismatic or pentecostal believer? You referenced 1 Cor 14, but the "spirit" of that chapter, the five words of instruction from the mind, are a lower case spirit that speaks mysteries. 1 Cor 14:2-19. For a reminder of how I see these things see #143816. I would say that we are filled/given/bapized in the holy spirit, and we have it all. He gives us the spirit without measure. John 3:34. 242 | leave when violent..? | Mal 2:16 | Ray | 143956
Hi greentwiga, When I spoke of the covenant being broken I did not mean that the marriage is over and that there should be a divorce. The covenant that I see in Malachi is one of life and peace. The covenant that I see in 1 Corinthians is that the husband and wife "consent to live" together. This "consent" is one of hearty approval; being pleased to dwell with each other. This is the convenant that was broken. Until they are pleased to dwell together in life and peace; until they are reconciled, they should be separated. From the heart, Ray |

243 | Is it just? | Mal 2:16 | Ray | 143954
Hi Searcher, Once again, you sidestep the issue. The question is, is there no recourse at all for a battered wife? You say that love must prevail. What love do you see in the husband who beats his wife? I would rather that the love that the wife has for life itself should be what prevails. The husband who abuses is not showing any love so how can it, being lacking, prevail? The battered wife can not know whether the husband will change and cease his abuse. God has called you and us to peace. 1 Corinthians 7:15ff. From the heart, Ray |

244 | leave when violent..? | Mal 2:16 | Ray | 143901
Hi Searcher, There is no provision for divorce for abuse. So is the wife supposed to stay in that situation and be "beaten up" or "battered"? The question is "leave when violent..?" From the heart, Ray |

245 | Unpardonable sin | Matt 12:32 | Ray | 143816
Hi justme, If you are open to the "power from on high", that holy spirit power, that spiritual power that Jesus had; then let's consider Ephesians 1:13. You spoke of believing in Him and being sealed "of the Holy Spirit". I believe that we were sealed with the holy spirit of promise, that promised gift from God. The Spirit of truth reminds us of all the things that Jesus said; the word of God. We hear the message of truth, the saving words of the gospel of salvation which is given as a down payment of our inheritance. We are given a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. Ephesians 1:13-17. It is when we are sealed with the holy spirit and are washed in the word of God, that we express faith in the Lord Jesus and have that saving knowledge of Him. We can not see the finger or the spirit of God any more than we can see the wind that blows. But that is the way of the Spirit of God. I believe that unless we are born of water and the spirit, we cannot enter into the kingdom of God. If we are born from above, become believers and enter into the kingdom of God, then we do not blaspheme the Holy Spirit but rather we recognize His spiritual power. From the heart, Ray |

246 | Unpardonable sin | Matt 12:32 | Ray | 143815
Hi justme, In your other post you spoke of "God's power through the Holy Spirit". What is the "power" that was used to cast out the demons in Matthew 12:28? We can not say along with the Pharisees that it was a demonic spirit because that would be blasphemy. Could we say however that it was a holy spirit that cast out the demons? Could not we say that He cast out demons by the power and spirit of God? Matthew 12:28, "But if I cast out demons by the *spirit of (God), then the kingdom of God has come upon you." Luke 11:20, "But if I cast out demons by the *finger of (God), then the kingdom of God has come upon you." From the heart, Ray |

247 | Why the execution in 2 Sam 1..? | 2 Sam 1:16 | Ray | 143736
Hi Seedling, The kind of reward he would be expecting would be the kind of reward that we would expect if we returned something of value to its owner. We might expect nothing or a little token of appreciation, but this Amalekite (a people who was supposed to have been exterminated by Saul but wasn't because of Saul's disobediance) expected the value of the crown and bracelet taken from Saul's body. We know from 1 Samuel 31:4,5 that Saul's armor bearer killed Saul, so this man was a liar and a thief. Plus he was a person that David recognized as a threat to anyone who was the Lord's anointed. 2 Samuel 4:10, "when one told me, saying, 'Behold, Saul is dead,' and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and killed him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news." 2 Samuel 1:13, "And David said to the young man who told him, "Where are you from? And he answered, "I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite." 15 And David called one of the young men and said, "Go, cut him down." So he struck him and he died. 16 And David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I have killed the (Lord's) anointed.'" 1 Samuel 16:8-11 shows us how David felt about "stretching out his hand" against the Lord's anointed. He said that all of the people who did not protect Saul were deserving of death (see NKJ) because they did not guard the (Lord's) anointed. From the heart, Ray |

249 | Knowing God | John 17:3 | Ray | 143640
Hi Hank, Knowing the triune God is key. Hebrews 4:14, "Since then we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of (God), let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin." John 17:1, "...Father, the hour has come; glorify Thy (Son), that the Son may glorify Thee," John 17:3, "And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true (God), and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent." John 17:5, "And now, glorify Thou (Me) together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world began." 1) 1 John 5:20, "And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding, in ordr that we might know (Him) who is true,..." John 20:31, "...and that believing you may have life in (His) name." 2 Tim 3:14, "You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them; 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by (God) and profitable for..." John 10:14, "I am the (g)Good (s)Shepherd, and I know My own, and My own know (Me)." 1 Cor 3:16, "Do you not know that you are a temple of (God), and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" The parentheses are mine to encourage comparisons. The capitalized "High Priest" is not in the NASB but is in the NKJ. From the heart, Ray |

250 | Are we looking for a way or the Way? | Matt 7:13 | Ray | 143582
Hi Bible Verse, The verse you offer here shows that the Father Himself is God. How do you view the anointing from the Holy One in verse? 1) Do you go with the NASB or the NKJ for 1 John 2:27? Has "it" taught you or has "He"? Or both? 2) Who is the He Himself of 1 John 2:25, in the NASB? (For the passage speaks of both the Father and the Son.) From the heart, Ray |

251 | Are we looking for a way or the Way? | Matt 7:13 | Ray | 143573
Hi lionheart, You wrote, "I don't know if I would look at knowing the Father as a way as much as I would look at it as the way." I love language, but it is often hard to determine the emphases and meaning on the typed paper. I think you are differentiating between "a way" and "the way". O.K. I see that as your point of focus. Now look at the sentence looking at differentiating between the "Father as a way" and "it as the way". Is "it" a way"? Is "it" enough for us? Is the father or even the Father enough for us? You have mentioned an excellent verse for working out this question. I do not see God the Father as an "it". This is my translation/interpretation for that verse. Philippians 2:12, "for God is the *One who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure." We are children of (God) as we walk with (Him). 1 John 3:1, "See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of (God); and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him." 1 John 2:6, "the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as (He) walked." The parentheses are mine for comparisons. From the heart, Ray |

252 | Ecclesiastes 11:5 and John 3:6 | Eccl 11:5 | Ray | 143554
Hi Tony2, I had in mind how the New Testament writers quoted the Old Testament and sought to tie them together and teach through them as a whole. I thought that the one phrase in Ecclesiastes about the path of the wind and the verse in John about the "pneuma" [spirit, wind] were connected. The little things like that cause wonder for me. I pretty much was making a comment at the end of a long day and with not much substance. Welcome to the forum. From the heart, Ray |

254 | Doers of the Law means...?? | Rom 2:13 | Ray | 143549
Hi seedling, I would capitalize the "abiding in Him", but I certainly would agree. :)) His (Spirit) indwells us; and the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of (God). Romans 8:11-16 If we abide in Him, (His) words abide in us; and Jesus said "abide in My love". John 15:10, "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in (My) love;..." We abide in the (Vine) for apart from Him/ we can do nothing. Just as in the beginning of the gospel of John "apart from Him/ nothing came into being that has come into being." That is the way I see it. The parentheses and slashes are mine for comparisons. From the heart, Ray |

255 | Doers of the Law means...?? | Rom 2:13 | Ray | 143521
Hi seedling, I think that you did well to correlate 2 Cor 3 and Romans 2. Your idea that God puts it [the spirit of the Law] into our hearts is correct as per Ezekiel 36:26,27. "I will give you a new heart and a new spirit within you." I compare 2 Cor 3:5-8 with Romans 2:23-29. 2 Cor 3:6 tells us that "the *Spirit gives life" and that the ministry of Spirit is with glory; and Romans 2:29 tells us that circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the spirit [my choice is *Spirit], not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God." 2) The witness that comes to my mind is the witness of the Spirit with our spirit that we are children of God. We have received a spirit of adoption as sons. Romans 8:16, "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." 3) We might also say that through faith Christ's spirit is flowing through us. What do you think? Hi DocTrinsograce, I look at patterns also. Proverbs 9:10, "The fear of the *Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." Numbers 24:16, "The oracle of him who hears the words [literally, sayings] of *God, And knows the knowledge of the Most High." John 6:63, ".."the words that *I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe and who it was that would betray Him." Proverbs 2:5-8 Proverbs 3:7, "Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the *Lord and turn away from evil. Proverbs 11:1 Proverbs 15:9 Proverbs 15:33, "The fear of the *Lord is the instruction for wisdom, And before honor comes humility." Proverbs 20:12, "The hearing ear and the seeing eye, The *Lord has made both of them." Proverbs 21:2, "Every man's way is right in his own eyes, But the *Lord weighs the hearts." Just some of the repetitions and thoughts to consider in knowing Proverbs 9:10. From the heart, Ray |

258 | Omit or not?To raise up the Messiah? | Acts 2:30 | Ray | 143432
Hi Mommapbs, The verses that you are posting here are not verses that I compared with each other. The word "gives" in 1 Thess suggests that God is giving His gift of holy spirit. The Holy Spirit of 2 Timothy 1:14 is He who is able to guard what was entrusted to Him (see verse 12). I would not compare them because one speaks of gift of holy spirit and the other of the Holy Spirit Himself. Now, if I follow your suggestion of a "holy Spirit" for 2 Tim 1:14 then the comparison with Ephesians 1:17 would not be the same. I failed to give you any comparison words, sorry. But I would compare "Holy"/ with "may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him./" Continuing on with the comparison of 2 Tim and Ephesians we would have the "treasure" and the "riches". 1) When speaking of the Person of the Holy Spirit, I believe that we should consistently capitalize the Holy. I am not saying that your suggestion of "holy Spirit" was not discussed through the ages. John 7:39 and the variance of manuscripts for that verse could be an example of such a discussion. 2) For an exercise in considering Gracious Father or "Holy Father" or "Righteous Father" you might look at John 17 and the conversation I had with Makarios and others years back. I hope this is all helping you. I do not want to discourage your free thinking, but God is not a God of confusion and we want to be consistent and discerning so that we may know the triune God better. I am encouraged today in reading 1 Thess 4:8, in that I am going with the NU Text and the NASB and "is giving" rather than the "has given" of the NKJ. In other words I am encouraged to think that we also can still be taught of (God) and receive instruction on how to walk and please (God). From the heart, Ray |

259 | Omit or not?To raise up the Messiah? | Acts 2:30 | Ray | 143378
Hi Mommapbs, Here is how I see your Scripture references--for clarification and discussion: 1) John 14:17: Here the Spirit of truth, another Helper, is a Person who will be with you forever. It is difficult to understand a triune God, but He is actually speaking of Himself. 2) 1 Cor 3:16, "Do you not know that you are a temple of (God), and that the **Spirit of *God dwells in you?" 1 Cor 6:19, NKJ, "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from (God), and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify **God in your body and in your spirit, which are *God's." 3) 1 Thess 4:8: 1 Thess 3:11, "Now may our God and Father Himself / and Jesus our Lord direct our way to you; 12 and may the (Lord) cause you to increase and abound in love for one another, and for all men, just as we also do for you;" 1 Thess 4:1, "...walk and please (God) (just as you actually do walk)..." 1 Thess 4:7, "For God/ has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. 8 Consequently, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives **His holy spirit to you. 9 Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by (God) to love one another." 1 Cor 12:11, "But the same **Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as (He) wills." 4) 2 Tim 1:14, "Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you." Here the Holy Spirit who dwells in us as believers gives us the treasure, the good deposit, the down payment, the pattern of sound words, the holy spirit. Ephesians 1:17, "that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. 5) Col 1:27, "...which is **Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 And we proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man will all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in (Christ). 29 And for this purpose also I labor, striving according to *His power which mightily works within me." Ephesians 1:18, "I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of **His calling; what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the sainsts, 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of (His) power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of *His might." The parentheses and stars are mine for comparisons. From the heart, Ray |

260 | Omit or not?To raise up the Messiah? | Acts 2:30 | Ray | 143362
Hi Mommapbs, In answer to your quick question: Are you thinking of Matthew 29:18? "And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to (Me) in heaven and earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I/ am with you always, even to the end of the age." We believe in the triune God. We believe that the Holy Spirit came upon the early Christians at Pentecost and they were endued with power, especially for being His witnesses. I haven't talked much with you, I don't believe, about the (h)Holy (s)Spirit. It is in that regard, namely whether we capitalize holy spirit or not, that I have my pencil sharp and my eraser in hand. It is as one concerned with capitalization and as one who counts nouns and pronouns of Deity, that I was looking at this passage in Acts 2. I believe in the Giver and the gift. The Holy Spirit and the holy spirit. The Word and the word. For Acts 2:38 I had for a long time decided on "the gift of the holy spirit" as speaking of the promised gift. For Acts 2:33 I had found agreement with "the promise of the Holy Spirit" until recently. I began to consider that the "gift of the holy spirit" is the same "promise of the holy spirit" for the promise is "for you and your children and for all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself". Acts 2:39. I had for Acts 2:17 penciled in a lower case "spirit". I chose a lower case "spirit' for verse 18 and for Joel 2:29. I am able to see a holy spirit being poured out easier than seeing the Spirit Himself being poured out. It was the identification of this variance in the manuscripts for Acts 2:30 that allowed me to change my mind in favor of a lower case "promise of the holy spirit". If you care to discuss this "power", this "power from on high", this holy spirit; let me know. I believe that the Spirit as the Giver gives us the gift of the spirit. From the heart, Ray |
