241 | What about the woman at the well in Jn 4 | John 4:18 | Ray | 110073
Hi TommyS, I have found this morning, that looking at Hosea along with John 4 can be enlightening. The idea of husbands and harlots or adulteresses are key to Hosea. I can envision the woman at the well and Jesus talking about Hosea. The idea that we can get from comparing them is that Jesus can show compassion on whom he shows compassion, and He will say to those who were not His people, "You are My people!" See Hosea 2:23. Jesus wants the woman to know Him as her "Husband". Hosea 2:16, "And it will come about in that day," declares the Lord, "That you will call Me, Ishi And will no longer call Me Baali. For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, So that they will be mentioned by their names no more." Jesus does not judge the woman for he knows that the men also are the sinners. Hosea 4:14 says that "I will not punish your daughters when they play the harlot Or your brides when they commit adultery, For the men themselves go apart with harlots And offer sacrifices with temple prostitutes; So the people without understanding are ruined." And Hosea 5:4 says that "Their deeds will not allow them To return to their God. For a spirit of harlotry is within them, And they do not know the Lord." The men were coming to Him after hearing the word of the woman. James 4:8 says "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." From the heart, Ray |

242 | Just your interpretation? | Rom 4:3 | Ray | 109883
Hi Kalos, I believe that you chose this verse, Romans 4:3, for the reference for your question. Let me offer the passage in the King James and ask for your interpretation from the standpoint of how you look at God. Romans 4:1-5, King James, "What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh not, but believeth on ***him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." What is your interpretation of the "***him" of verse four? Or how do we look at Romans 10:14 in the King James? From the heart, Ray |

243 | Is Jesus "least" in kingdom of heaven? | Matt 11:11 | Ray | 109849
Hi TommyS, I am happy to see that you are studying pronouns to determine who it is that is being spoken of, for since there is no way to determine capitalization in the Greek itself, that is very important. Since you wonder if HE HIMSELF is the least in the kingdom of heaven, you are wondering if the "he", "the one", NASB, should be capitalized in Matthew 11:11. You may be aware that I have expressed on the forum that I capitalize in my personal copy the pronoun in Matthew 11:10, "This is the One about whom it is written,..." In verse 11 Jesus continues, "Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen [anyone] greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he." For my study of Jesus being the One spoken of rather than this man John the baptist, I contrast Matthew 11:10 and 11 with a literal translation of John 6:14, "This [One] is of a truth the Prophet, the One who is to come into the world." I compare Matthew 11:10,11 with John 6:29, "Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him [sic] whom He has sent." The gospel of John was written to downplay John the baptist, in favor of the importance of Christ. I believe that Matthew does the same, so I am happy that you were considering capitalizing the "he" of Matthew 11:11. In considering leaving the pronoun in the lower case, (and I believe that it is rightfully in the lower case) I think of other verses where Jesus speaks about the "least" ones. Luke 9:46, "And an argument arose among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side, 48 and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for he [sic] who is least among you, this is the one [sic] who is great." Luke 9:48c, NKJ, "For he who is least among you all will be great." Here Jesus is claiming equality with the One who sent Him. And if we leave the "he" in lower case we recognize that He came in the likeness of men and that He humbled Himself. Jesus continued on in Luke 9:50 and said, NKJ, "Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is on our side." Or in the NASB, "...for he who is not against you, is for you." So, again, I believe we can see His humanity here. Yet see also Luke 11:23, "He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters." I was going to contrast Luke 9:48 with Luke 22:47, but this post is long enough as it is. Hope it helps. From the heart, Ray |

244 | 100 percent accurate interpretation | Jon 1:1 | Ray | 109715
Hi New Creature, When talking about interpretation, I think about capitalization of the pronouns of Deity, mainly. The translation is important also, but mainly for determining the number of pronouns. That is my opinion. I don't know how many people were involved in the translation/interpretation of Jonah for the New King James version, but I would personally give it my stamp of approval for a l00 percent accurate rendering of that book. I would think that the NASB would be easily persuaded to agree with the NKJ, also, in a future copyright. I believe that it is possible for us to agree 100 percent on the interpretation of Scripture if we all have the same perception of God. In comparing the NKJ and the NASB look at John 1:6, Jonah 2:3 (also Psalm 42:7, NASB), and Jonah 4:2. I think that our translators/interpreters have to be consistent in their work. See Psalm 42:7 and Jonah 2:3 for an example of this. From the heart, Ray |

246 | Searching for the truth | Genesis | Ray | 108931
Hi Fyt Robert, If you go to the Ask Questions Action section and type in Genesis 1:26 or 27 you will find that this has been discussed quite a bit. You wrote as a misquote or typo for Genesis 1:26, "God said "Let us make man in our images, in our likeness...". The "images" should be a singular "image". I also like to capitalize the "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness." I know that God is speaking in Genesis 1:26 and I know that man was made in the image of God because of verse 27. I like to think of "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness" as being the words of the Man, Jesus Christ. I compare this phrase with Colossians 1:16, "For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created by Him and for Him." I compare the phrase "Let Us..." with John 1:1,2, "...and the Word was God. This One was in the beginning..." 1) Scriptures that were offered in the other threads for Genesis 1:26 were these, and I offer them (with slashes) for comparisons. Genesis 1:27, "...in the image of God/ He created him; male and female He created them." Colossians 3:9,10, "Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One/ who created him-- 11 a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all." 1 Corinthians 12:24b, "...But God/ has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another... 27 Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it." Ephesians 5:29, "for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ/ also does the church, 30 because we are members of His body." Ephesians 4:24, "and put on the new self which in the likeness of God/ has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth." 1 Samuel 2:2, "There is no one holy like the Lord, Indeed, there is no one besides Thee,/ Nor is there any rock like our God." 247 | scripture of , were silent the rocks | Luke 19:40 | Ray | 108871
Hi slipskip, A reference verse for Luke 19:40 is Habakkuk 2:11, "Surely the stone will cry out from the wall, And the rafter will answer it from the framework." I started to think about being silent and started to compare some verses. I hope that you won't mind my talking about some things outside of your question. I saw this contrast in Habakkuk concerning the silence of God and the earth being silent. Habakkuk 1:13, "Why dost Thou look with favor On those who deal treacherously? Why art Thou silent when the wicked swallow up Those more righteous than they? Why hast Thou made men like the fish of the sea, Like creeping things without a ruler over them?" Habakkuk 2:18ff, "What profit is the idol when its maker has carved it, Or an image, a teacher of falsehood? For its maker trusts in his own handiwork When he fashions speechless idols. Woe to him who says to a piece of wood, "Awake!" To a dumb stone, 'Arise!' And that is your teacher? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, And there is no breath at all inside it. But the Lord/ is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him." Luke 19:45, "And He entered the temple and began to cast out those who were selling, saying to them, "It is written, ' And My/ house shall be a house of prayer,' but you have made it a robbers' den." And He was teaching daily in the temple;..." Habakkuk in chapter 3 told the Lord in prayer that he had heard the report of the Lord and he stands in awe of His work in the midst of the years. The people in Luke 19:48 were hanging on Him and listening to His words as He taught in the temple and preached the gospel. Anyway, some things to think about. Welcome to the forum. 248 | family salvation | Acts 16:31 | Ray | 108825
Hi donna robertson, A comparison of the verses given to you so far show how it is up to each one of us to walk in faith and develop our convictions and opinions. 1 Corinthians 7:17, "Only, as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each, in this manner let him walk..." Romans 14:12, "So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God." We all have our own opinions on how we should walk, but the important thing is to keep the commandments of God. Romans 14:21, "It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God./ Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves." 1 Cor 7:24, "Brethren, let each man remain with God in that condition in which he was called. Now concerning virgins I have no command of the Lord, but I give an opinion as one who by the mercy of the Lord/ is trustworthy." We all have our convictions and opinions, but what is important is obeying the commandments of God; things that we are convinced of in the Lord Jesus. From the heart, Ray |

249 | Do you accept defeat too? | Heb 10:14 | Ray | 108254
Hi Gal5:16, Thanks for bringing up the topic again. May I ask what version of the Bible you are quoting from? I would like you to compare your "It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect" with the NASB for 2 Samuel 22:33. 2 Samuel 22:33, "God is my strong fortress; And (He) sets the blameless in His way." An alternate reading would be "God is my fortress; And He sets free the complete ones in His way." When one compares this passage with the Hebrew 10 passage we learn that we can know a new and living (Way). 2 Samuel 22:31, "As for God, (His) way is blameless [complete]; The word of the Lord is tested; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a *Rock/, besides our God?" From the heart, Ray |

250 | Nathanael sitting under fig tree means ? | John 1:48 | Ray | 108068
Hi pineska, Welcome to the forum. I don't recognize the version that you quoted from in your question. One can find many references in the Bible about sitting under the fig tree. See 1Kings 4:25, 2 Kings 18:31, Isaiah 36:16. I like to think that Nathaniel was thinking about the Scriptures and praying while under his fig tree. Perhaps thinking of the peace and prosperity that would come when the King arrives. I compare John 1:48 with Micah 4:4 and Zechariah 4:10. John 1:48, "Nathanael said to Him, 'How do You know me?" (Jesus) answered and said to him, 'Before Phillip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Zechariah 3:10, "'In that day,' declares the (Lord) of hosts, 'every on of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and under his fig tree.'" Micah 4:3, "And (He) will judge between many peoples And render decisions for mighty, distant nations. Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they train for war, And each of them will sit under is vine And under his fig tree, With no one to make them afraid, For the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken." He is the King of Israel. Micah 4:7, "I will make the lame a remnant, And the outcasts a strong nation, And the Lord will reign over them in Mount Zion From now on and forever." From the heart, Ray |

251 | Why wasn't Jesus named Immanuel? | Matt 1:19 | Ray | 107975
Hi Schimc, You ask, "Why wasn't Jesus named Immanuel?" I would say that Immanuel is more of a title; Jesus came in the name and authority of being God with us. Matthew 1:22, "Now all this took place that was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, 'Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,' which translated means, ***'God with us.'" Matthew 21:9, "And the multitudes going before Him, and those who followed after were crying out, saying, 'Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest!' And when ***He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, 'Who is this?'" Why didn't they call Him ***Immanuel? Because they did not know who this was. From the heart, Ray |

252 | Is the Virgin Birth of Jesus a myth? | Matt 1:19 | Ray | 107928
Hi schimc, Thanks for your question. It reminds me that I wanted to go back to a discussion of Isaiah 7:15 and my post #106825. I believe that the passages in Isaiah 7 and 8 are a dual prophecy. Isaiah 7:14 talks about the virgin [Mary] who would be with child and bear a Son [sic]. That is in contrast to the young woman, the prophetess, Isaiah's wife who would give birth to a son [sic]. There is that contrast between the Boy Jesus and the boy who knows how to cry out 'My father'. Isaiah 8:4 The virgin birth is the sign that what was conceived in her was of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:18, "Now the birth of Jesus/Christ was as follows. When His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the (Holy) Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her, desired to put her away secretly. But when he considered this, behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which [NASB, l977] has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bear a Son..." Isaiah 7:11, "Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord/ your God; make it deep as Sheol or high as heaven." But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord!" Then he said, "Listen now O house of David! Is it too slight a things for ou to try the patience of men, that you will try the patience of my (God) as well? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a Son, and she will call His name Immanuel." The slashes and parentheses are mine to show how I would compare the passages. From the heart, Ray |

253 | What is God saying in this verse? | Gen 3:15 | Ray | 107639
Hi Hallie, I go with the NASB on this passage when it leaves in lower case the word "seed". The style of their format leaves "He shall bruise" in question, but "he shall bruise" should agree with "you shall bruise him". So the word seed and the two pronouns of him I leave in lower case and do not think of them as Deity. I would say that everyone is at enmity with the serpent whether we are aware of it or not. We can bruise him and he can bruise us, but the important thing to remember is that he is defeated in the end because of Christ. Romans 16:20, "And the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet." There is a difference between the bruises that we can inflict and the crushing that God does on our behalf. Hi Norm, I have a question for you. By whose authority did Jesus do the things that He did? I am thinking about John 12:49,50 and others. John 12:49,50, "For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me commandment, what to say, and what to speak. And I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me." Matthew 28:19, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." [Just as the Father has told Me]. From the heart, Ray |

255 | Where do i go for helpwith problems? | Prov 3:5 | Ray | 107557
Hi Brenda02, Welcome to the forum. Using a concordance of the Bible, one can find many references that will help you. In your case you could start with "peace". Philippians 4:6,7, NKJ, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Romans 5:1, "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." John 14:27, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." Romans 8:6, "For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." Isaiah 26:3, "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." Psalm 85:8, "I will hear what God the Lord will speak, for He will speak peace to His people and to His saints; but let them not turn back to folly." 2 Thess 5:16, "Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all." Brenda02, I think that just being thankful in all things will give you peace. Keep your mind focused on Him and trust in Him for He loves you. From the heart, Ray |

Hi Born Witness, The following verse references were written out in a book called "Precious Bible Promises", Thomas Nelson Publishers. The copy I have is presented by Coral Ridge Ministries. The theme of the Bible Promises for your interest is "In Security" , pp. 112-115. I will type the references and write out the ones that might apply to your interest. These are in the NKJ. 1 John 4:4, "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." John 10:29 Jude 23-25, "Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the prescence of His glory with exceeding joy, to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen." Romans 8:37-39, "Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that..." Psalm 42:5, "Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance." Isaiah 25:9, "And it will be said in that day: "Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for Him; we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation." Psalm 23:6 1 Peter 3:13, "And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good?" Isaiah 40:26 Philippians 1:6, "Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." Hebrews 10:35-36 Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Hebrews 13:6, "So we may boldly say: 'The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?'" Habakkuk 3:19 1 John 5:14-15 1 John 5:18 Isaiah 43:2, "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you." Psalm 94:18, "If I say, 'My foot slips', Your mercy, O Lord, will hold me up." 2 Peter 1:10, "Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble." Those are the Scriptures listed in the book "Precious Bible Promises". The introduction says, "Someone has said that there are more than thirty-seven thousand promises in the Word of God. Precious Bible Promises makes the most prominent of those readily available in a systematic form." Hope it helps. From the heart, Ray From the heart, Ray |

257 | Need to confess sins after being saved. | 1 John 1:9 | Ray | 107477
Hi windjammer, I don't know exactly what your friend says, but there is probably a little truth in what he says. As far as his saying that there is no longer a need to pray for forgiveness: If we have confessed a sin and look to Christ as the Savior for that sin, I would agree that there is no need to continually ask for forgiveness for that sin. He is faithful and righteous to forgive that sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If that same sin unexpectedly occurs or tempts us, then it is time to get our eyes off the sin and look to the Savior. We should then focus on Him and get to know Him better. If we know Him, we will keep His commandments. If we have a recurring sin, then we need to look for added strength and focus. We have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. The one who does the will of God abides forever and we have an annointing from the Holy One. And we know that He is righteous. 1 John 2:6, "the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as (He) walked." 1 John 1:5, "...God is (Light)." When we sin we lose some of our joy but we do not lose our salvation. We need to walk and abide in the Light. We are to be lights in the world, just as He was the (Light) of the world. I agree, windjammer, that we should confess our sins, especially any new sin, so that we can know His forgiveness. But it is in the rependance, the putting aside of that sin, that our communion is restored. 1 John 1:6,7, NASB, 1995, "If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin." 258 | Is Jesus God? Who is telling the Truth? | OT general | Ray | 107262
Hi Mommapbs, "Who is telling the Truth?", you say. Tara1 says that "truth is truth". Jesus said in John 14:6 that He was the Truth and the only Way to the Life and the gospel message. I would like to comment on flinkywood's post today where he quotes Scriptures from the LITV. Do you know what that version is? Anyway, he asks who the last speaker is for the references given. And I would like to look at Isaiah 41:1-4 with you all. Who is this last Speaker? Let us reason together for judgment. Isaiah 41:1-4, "Coastlands, listen to Me in silence, And let the peoples gain new strength; Let them come forward, then let them speak; Let us come together for judgment. "Who has aroused *one from the east Whom He calls in righteousness to His feet? *He delivers up nations before *him, and subdues kings. *He makes them like dust with *his sword, As the wind-driven chaff with *his bow. *He pursues them, passing on in safety, By a way *he had not been traversing with *his feet. Who has performed and accomplished it, Calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord, am the *first, and with the *last. I am He." I think that we in these last days can be looking for the Truth as well as the truth. I choose to capitalize "I, the Lord, am the First, and with the Last. I am He." To be consistent with the other verses of references that flinywood quoted, it should be First and Last. The nine pronouns that I *starred you can make up your own mind about but I think they are pronouns of the Truth. From the heart, Ray |

259 | Who are the Prophets who ate books? | Bible general Archive 2 | Ray | 107146
Hi Ironlips, I think that the scroll or the words of God are freely given to us as well. We should eat the Bread of life. Ezekiel 2:7, "But you shall speak (My) words to them whether they listen or not, for they are rebellious. Now you, son of man, listen to what I am speaking to you; do not be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth and eat what I am giving you." 1 Cor 2:12, NKJ, "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual." Ezekiel 3:4, "Then He said to me, "Son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak with (My) words to them...But I have sent you to them who should listen to you;" John 8:43, "Why do you not understand what I am saying to you?? It is because you do not hear My word." From the heart, Ray |

260 | Spirit vs spirit | Ex 31:3 | Ray | 107117
Hi Mikesc79, Welcome to the forum. Makarios and I have talked about capitalization issues before and it is indeed helpful as he says to consider the versions. What you are looking at when you consider capitalization is "interpretation". The NKJ and the NASB and the Holman Christian Standard, New Testament are versions to go to for help in capitalization. But your interpretation might be as good as the translators of the original languages because the languages do not give any guidance in that regard. We all have to determine if the Spirit is spoken of by the context of the passages. If you want to talk further, perhaps a good starting place would be Exodus 31:3. Here is a place where I have penciled in lower case "spirit" of God for my personal copy. A similar verse is Exodus 35:31. I believe that we should strive for consistency in our capitalization choices. 1 Kings 7:4 is a similar verse with no spirit or Spirit in the translation. A pronoun of God is a big ommision in the word of God I would think. Another marginal reference at Exodus 31:3 is for 1 Corinthians 12:4-8. Here we could discuss the difference between the spirit as a gift, and the gifts given through the Spirit. The difference between the gift and the Giver. 1 Corinthians 12:4, "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit." From the heart, Ray |
