2161 | How important is your Church? | Bible general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 29085
Brian, The Church is the Body of Christ. To me it is indispensable. Even Jesus gathered companions for his mission and He established the Church for us. We are by God's creation naturally communal and familial creatures even as the Triune God is one but communal and familial. Even the Lone Ranger had Tonto so even he wasn't alone. Emmaus |

2162 | And 'Finally' Eph.6:10. a dilemma for me | Eph 6:10 | Emmaus | 29083
nodland, I think you might also take "finally" as "last but not least" or "most importantly." In that sense Paul is reminding that this is not a battle of the flesh but a spiritual batle in which we must rely on prayer and God's strength not our own. He uses the meataphor or example of the dress and equipment of Roman soldiers who battle in the flesh for the spiritual armaments we are equiped with by God. When we sign up in his army we stay in contact and obey through prayer and He provides us with the spiritual equipment we need. Eph 6:18. Pray, pray, pray. 2163 | "Oliver Twist" Christians? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Emmaus | 29081
Hank, This type of preaching shifts the focus from Jesus, the supposed center of attention, to the preacher. It is a very interesting technique although not very subtle. It is amazing that so many swallow it. I am suprised that more do not develop into cults like Jim Jones and David Koresh. When you get into new personal rvelation you do not have to answer to any tradition or history of exegesis by the Church. That leaves the field awfully wide open to run wild. Hence the warning of 2Peter 1:20-21 whether we are dealing with twisting of scripture or outright departure from it. That is why the "just me and Jesus" concept is dangerous. We need a community, a larger Body of Christ to give us the context of the Gospel as it is played out in our lives just as the text of the entire scriptures gives us context for any particular portion of scripture. 2165 | Why doesn't Mark talk about Jesus' birth | Mark | Emmaus | 29078
Angel, Mark is generally thought to have been written for a Gentile Roman audience. Mark was Peter's companion. For a Roman Gentile audience it was not important to discuss the geneology which would have been important to the Jews,to whom Matthhew was generally addressed and to whom the geneology was important. Romans were impressed by power and action. Mark is a tour de force of the Messiah, the Son of God. This Gospel moves from one display of power to another in quick sequence. It would be an action movie of it's day. One action scene after another. You will notice the general absence of Jewish themes which are more deveopled in the other Gospels especially Matthew and John. Luke also is a more universal Gospel written by a Gentile and when he does discuss the nativity he brings in the Gentiles, wise men, and also adresses geneology much later in his Gospel. Emmaus |

2166 | Please explain Isa 60 1-4 61 1-4 10-11 | Isaiah | Emmaus | 29075
Is 60:1-4 and Is 61:1-4 are spoken by the prophet regarding the restoration of Zion after the Babylonian exile. But they also refer to a Messianic restoration and in that sense Jesus refers to Is 61:1-4 in describing his mission in Luke 4 :18 and following. See also Is 42:1 and Is 48 and Matt 5:4 Is 61:10-11 could be seen as the the response of Zion or the Church to her restoration and redemption or of the Messiah. See Matt 5:6 Emmaus |

2167 | Please explain God's romantic love. | Luke 20:34 | Emmaus | 28988
whitestone, The Old Testament is full of marriage imagery of the relationship between God and his people as a husband/wife relationship. See The Song of Songs and the Book of Josea. In the New Testament we have the image of the Church as the bride of Christ in the book of Revelation. It is an image of intimacy beyond the mere physical which is a metaphor for spiritual realities. Of course one of the problems was the constant infidelity of the Old testament Bride, so it does not seem so romantic. This is a theme taken up in some areas of mystical theology. Despite the masculine authorship of scripture under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, women today often seem to be better at developing and understanding this type of theology because they are feminine by nature, whereas men are feminine in relation to God as members of the bride but not by physical nature. On the other hand women can be seen as masculine as members of the mystical body of Christ Jesus in his sonship to the father. The whole bible is full of all different types of family relationships to describe the relatioship between God and men. Father /son/daughter, husband/wife, brothers /sisters, mother/ child. But the most common we recognize is the image of the Father / child relationship I expect because of the teaching of Jesus in that context. Emmaus |
