22 | Why God killed boys for teasing Elisha | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 195933
Hi Beau, Understanding the character of God is, of the highest order in this case. God does NOT kill innocent children. It is my understanding that in the hebrew the word that is translated for children, actually is a term that means "young men" and you can be certain that they were accountable for their actions. In mocking God's prophet, they were actually, mocking God! Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. God bless John |

24 | A prophet | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196054
Hi Sister Azure, Interesting question; I think maybe they [the false prophets] were just doing what 'false' prophets do, attacking the true Word of God, and going with their own agenda. As to their status, it seems that most, if not all the prophets of God, in all times, faced great difficulty and persecution, from those that did not choose to believe the Word of God. Just my one cent ;-) God bless John |

25 | many are called but only few are chosen | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196089
Dear st, "many are called but only few are chosen" Does not imply that we don't have free will, that is, in order to answer a call one must make a choice to answer, or not to answer, it does imply, however, that few answer with sincerity of heart, therefor, few are chosen. God bless John |

26 | what is free grace | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196155
Hi Brenda Well, if it were not free, it wouldn't be grace. By its definition grace is free. It's like this, suppose you are a murderer, you are caught red handed, found guilty and sentenced to death, and you deserve it. But instead of the sentence being carried out, the executioner says you can live. Now thats mercy. But then, inexplicably, he brings you home to live in his house to be one of his children, and gives you gifts! Now thats grace! And, it's free! Thats sort of what God does for us, salvation is the free gift of God, by His grace. |

29 | What is the reason God is speaking of ? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196226
He hates it. Even when it is justified. In his reveled nature, He would prefer it if restitution is sought and attained. God is a restorer of things, it is His will that none should perish, "and the two became one flesh," Type the word [restore] in the get Bible text search word(s): box, and see how many times it comes up in Scripture. Then read all 116 verses. God bless John |

Hello 2513 Welcome, Personally, I would pray and ask God to open doors, and, I don't mean to sound flip, but then I would open the help wanted section of the local news paper. Maybe others will have some encouraging verses for you. I pray that God will open your eyes to the truth of His word and show that it is not so much how many zeros are in our paycheck, but wether we regard the paycheck as ours, or God's. I recall reading about someone saying to a very successful business man that, he was just "lucky" to have had so many opportunities to reap a profit. The man replied simply, yes, but it seems, the harder I work, the luckier I get! God bless john |

33 | Does separation from God mean no love? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196394
Hello Scooter, Here is something you may remember writing, that I believe is true, remember, satin is the author of confusion, so hold on to the truth. "there is no darkness in light. There is no hate in love, and there is no sin with God." God bless John |

34 | Does separation from God mean no love? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196398
Hi Scooter, Well, the things you mention as being "mixed" with love, are not love. The later three, they are emotions; now that's not to say that love does not evoke emotion, man, does it ever! But the love that is being spoken of in the Bible, is not the kind of love you would normaly mix with those negative kinds of emotions, envy, greed, jealousy, etc. and, "perversion" is another issue altogether, perversion stems form a desire to have un-biblical or, i.e. sex outside of the guidelines set-forth by God, that is also a part of what is called erotic love, or Eros, I think in greek, that is not love, that is a misunderstanding that man has adopted, and is quite popular, [unfortunately]; what that is, is lust! Agape love, which is pure love, cannot be experienced apart from God. Here is something els that may help you. God bless John : Easton's Bible Dictionary LOVE This word seems to require explanation only in the case of its use by our Lord in his interview with "Simon, the son of Jonas," after his resurrection (John 21:16, 17). When our Lord says, "Lovest thou me?" he uses the Greek word _agapas_; and when Simon answers, he uses the Greek word _philo_, i.e., "I love." This is the usage in the first and second questions put by our Lord; but in the third our Lord uses Simon's word. The distinction between these two Greek words is thus fitly described by Trench:, "_Agapan_ has more of judgment and deliberate choice; _philein_ has more of attachment and peculiar personal affection. Thus the 'Lovest thou' (Gr. agapas) on the lips of the Lord seems to Peter at this moment too cold a word, as though his Lord were keeping him at a distance, or at least not inviting him to draw near, as in the passionate yearning of his heart he desired now to do. Therefore he puts by the word and substitutes his own stronger 'I love' (Gr. philo) in its room. A second time he does the same. And now he has conquered; for when the Lord demands a third time whether he loves him, he does it in the word which alone will satisfy Peter ('Lovest thou,' Gr. phileis), which alone claims from him that personal attachment and affection with which indeed he knows that his heart is full." In 1 Corinthians 13 the apostle sets forth the excellency of love, as the word "charity" there is rendered in the Revised Version. |

36 | I can do all things Phill.4:13 | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196438
Hello Faridah, A warm welcome to the forum! I would like also to welcome you to the family of Christians, who can honestly say that we don't measure up to the kind of prayer-life that we should. I don't believe that anyone who calls themselves Christian, can say that they spend enough time with God, we all, if we are honest, feel inadequate before God. May I say, your call for help, is heard, and will be answered, if you direct it to Him who is adequate. When the Apostles would look for our Lord they would most often find Him praying to the Father. Who of us can say that we come even close to that kind of prayer-life? Be encouraged, that you know that you need Him, and you at lest have a desire to know Him better. Keep praying, and as little as that may be, or as much as that may be, we all know, it will never be enough to assuage our feeling that it, just isn't enough, to give Him the thanks that He really deserves, for what He has done for us. Be blessed my Sister! When I think of you, I will pray for you. God bless John |

38 | number conflict? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196750
Amen Doc! Much of the first part of Matt 7 is a clear call for very careful discernment in judging others; but in v 6 our Lord is also, clearly, instructing us not to have anything to do with dogs and pigs, and, certainly he is not speaking about literal dogs, or pigs, He is speaking about people. This poses a very important question; how are we to know the difference? Verse 7-8 have been misinterpreted, for a "grab bag" for all kinds of wonderful gifts and blessings, but here I believe our Lord, is telling us to study the Word, and mostly pray for discernment, so that we can make that judgment. Would our Father give us a snake? Just my 2 pennies worth. God bless John |

40 | difference between the soul and spirit? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196773
Hi bigpinky, Welcome to the forum! Thats a very good question! I'm not sure I understand the difference, very well, but I'll take a shot. The line between Soul and Spirit is a hazy one indeed: Soul; is that part of us that is our consciousness, our wants/desires, our feelings, our very thoughts, that which we perceive as, ‘self’, is our soul, it has been called, the seat of appetite. Spirit; sometimes is used to mean breath, indicating, that which is vital to life, also sometimes used in describing a tendency toward a particular behavior, (i.e. he has a lying spirit, a leaning toward, or an untruthfulness or unfaithfulness in spirt). Spirit and soul are often both looked at as, that part of man that is unseen and sentient, or conscious, or aware of the fact that we are alive. I hope that helps. Gods bless John |
