21 | God's name or a title? | John 1:1 | Sir Pent | 120981
Disagreement.......................................................... Hi BStudent, There is too much in your last post to reply to all of it individually. But I will summarize by saying that your interpretation of the Bible goes against what is widely considered a correct Christian understanding of it. Your background in the Jehovah's Witness has significantly biased your interpretation, and is the reason for the mental gymnastics used to explain why these verses don't mean what they say they mean. I will point out the same thing that I have told others on this subject. God sent the Bible to be His message to mankind. He has protected it's accuracy through the years, copies, and translations. He would not have allowed it to be corrupted to the extent that people would have been decieved into thinking Jesus was God. If the Bible says that "the Word (Jesus) was God" then that is exactly what God meant. Attempting to explain it away by looking at Greek is only trying to confuse people. Put your trust in your Bible, not in your brain, or in the brains of the Jehovah's Witness teachers who are leading you into error. |

22 | The culture war | Luke 17:3 | Sir Pent | 120980
A different perspective.............................................. Hi Pete2, You seem to think that Christians cannot win the culture war due to their desire to "turn the other cheek". You seem to think that being kind cannot stop evil. However, there are many examples in history where just the opposite is true. For instance, there is the story of Telemechus the monk. His peaceful protest of the gladiator contests in ancient Rome stopped the killing there forever. This is recorded in the writings of Theodoret (http://www.ccel.org/s/schaff/npnf203/htm/iv.viii.v.xxv.htm) I can relate to your personal experience of being raised in a Christian home but coming to a point of having to start over with a clean slate (tabula rasa) to determine what you believe. Perhaps you would be interested in reading how I started from scratch and found Christianity to be the only logical choice. 23 | Simple analogy to understand the Trinity | 2 Cor 13:14 | Sir Pent | 120968
Personal Note......................................................... Hi Mary01, Thanks for your response and do not be concerned with offending me. I always enjoy having a good logical exploration of a subject with someone. If I understand correctly, you agree that the Father is God, but you disagree that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are God. Let's examine Jesus first. You said that you interpret John 1:1 differently and in such a way that it does not say that "the Word (Jesus) was God", as it clearly appears to. Your explanation of this was based on the original greek, which Tim Moran (who is much more an expert in that area than I) has already responded. However, let me also respond by saying that God would not allow His message to all mankind to be so corrupted that He would allow that significant an error in translation. For more information on my thoughts along these lines type the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. You also said that you interpret differently Jesus statement in John 10:30 that "I (Jesus) and the Father are one". You see this as just saying they are united in mind (ie they think alike). However if you want to look at the Greek, there is a word used throughout the New Testament that means being united in one mind. It is "homothumadon", and is used 11 times. If this is what Jesus meant, then logically He would have used that word, but He didn't. And if you are like me and are convinced that God protects the accuracy of His message to mankind, then you would also be convinced that God would not allow an error in translation like this that would lead people to believe that Jesus was God. I hope that you will chew on some of this for a while, and I look forward to hearing your response. |

25 | Cristians are a no show in Culture War | Luke 17:3 | Sir Pent | 120956
Referral to another thread............................................ Hi Mommapbs, You asked where were Christians during Roe vs. Wade? Many of them were praying for Roe, and their prayers were answered. She has now become a Christian and actively supports the unborn. You asked where were Christians when school prayer was banned? Many of them were starting something called "See you at the pole", which now has thousands of students praying around their school flagpoles across America. You asked where were Christians while evolution was being taught? Many Christians have put much time and effort into discovering how science supports the scriptural account of creation. See ICR.org for more information. You asked where were Christians when the Ten Commandments were removed? Many of them have put signs in their yards to support the return of the Ten Commandments, and some such as Justice Roy Moore have put their career on the line for that cause. You asked where are Christians now that "In God We Trust" is endangered? Many of them have started groups such as the CLA (www.christianlaw.org) and the ACLJ (www.aclj.org) to defend against these legal threats. You asked where are Christians now that "sanctity of life" is endangered? Many of them started an organization called "Right to Life" to fight this culture war. Even their enemies admit that they are winning. (http://www.miplannedparenthood.org/rtl.htm) You asked where were Christians when the US Post Office released an Islamic stamp? Many of them are protesting and educating people about this issue (http://www.freecongress.org/commentaries/2002/021121pw.asp) While I agree with you that more could be done, one cannot deny that there are Christians who are truly engaging in the "culture war". I hope that this message is an encouragement to you Mommapbs. I hope you can see that the cup is half-full :) |

27 | God's name or a title? | John 1:1 | Sir Pent | 120843
Disagreement......................................................... Hi Bstudent, In your post, you said that I am wrong to designate the Bible as the highest authority in my life. You said that it was better to allow reason and logic to control you beliefs and actions. I disagree. Humanity is too good at rationalizing to trust your eternal soul to your ability to be rational. We need an anchor that is beyond ourselves and thankfully God has given us His Word to be just that :) 1 Cor 2:5 "so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God." |

Request for more information.......................................... Hi Mary01, In your post, you said that you did not think that the Bible passages that people had posted about the Trinity actually supported that idea. Could you please type the number 120479 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right of the screen. This will take you to a post that I wrote on the subject that contains several verses on the subject. I would be interested to know what you think that those verses mean since you don't think they support the idea of the Trinity. |

29 | God's name or a title? | John 1:1 | Sir Pent | 120612
Referral to another thread............................................ Hi Cloud, Understanding the Trinity is not as impossible to understand as most people think. Please type the number 120478 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen for more information. P.S. Dear Lockman Foundation, why is Bstudent not banned from the forum? He has posted openly that someone should study with Jehovah's Witnesses (a known cult) in post 120593. He has also questioned the deity of Christ (breaking a forum guideline) by denying Jesus eternal nature (posts 119537 and 120536) and by declaring that Jesus is "separate and obviously inferior" to God (post 119192). |

Personal Note......................................................... Hi Angel, I am fine with you calling me something other than my full screen name. I would most prefer if you called me by the one that you observe to allign with my posts. If you primarily consider my posts to be defending people and ideas that are right, then I would ask that you call me "Sir". If you primarily consider my posts to be "held in" and expressed with self-control, then I would ask that you call me "Pent". If you do not believe that my posts reflect either of these things, then perhaps you would prefer to just call me "Mark". P.S. I think that we are in agreement that if you subtract God from science, you lose all meaning and purpose. |

Personal Note........................................................ Hi Tim, I'm glad that we share the confidence in the authority of scripture both when it was written and even still today. I also look forward to more participation from you when your life calms down a bit. Until then, enjoy the piano :) |

Clarification......................................................... Hi Angel, I'm glad that you seem to agree that God does reveal Himself to us even through nature (science) and other fields like philosophy and astronomy. The reason why I thought you did not believe that, was your statement that "we cannot seek God through sicence, philosophy or any other human wisdom". I am glad that we are now in agreement, and I forgive you for not wanting to use my screen name. When I first came to the forum many years ago, several people also were concerned about it. However, if you'll click on my name, my user profile explains it's origin. |

An alternative view................................................... Hi Angel, I agree with you that only through God's grace can we come to know Him. However, I would disagree that God doesn't use things like science and philosophy to bring people to Himself. Romans 1:20 says "For since the creation of the world His (God's) invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they (all humans) are without excuse." Luke 19:40 says "But Jesus answered, 'I tell you, if these (My followers) become silent, the stones will cry out!'" These are just two examples of places where the Bible supports the idea that nature (science) can and is used by God to bring people to know Himself. Please type the number 22206 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to a series of posts that I made once explaining how one can discover who God is from observing His creation. |

36 | who can explain to me? | John 1:1 | Sir Pent | 120480
An alternative view................................................... Hi Rowdy, You stated that it is difficult for us to understand the concept of the Trinity. Although most Christians do think that it is very complicated, I would suggest that there is a relatively simple explanation. Please type the number 120478 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen to see my thoughts on this subject. |

37 | Simple analogy to understand the Trinity | 2 Cor 13:14 | Sir Pent | 120479
Support for my Trinity beliefs........................................ The Father is God. Eph 4:6 "one God and Father of all..." One of the Father's primary purposes is to determine the will of the whole Trinity. Luke 22:42 "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me (Jesus); yet not My will, but Yours be done." The Son is God. John 1:1 "...the Word (Jesus) was God", John 10:30 "I (Jesus) and the Father are one." One of the Son's primary purposes is to reconcile humanity to God. 2 Cor 5:18 "Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation". The Holy Spirit is God. Acts 5:3-4 clearly equates lying to the Holy Spirit in verse 3 with lying to God in verse 4. There is further support in 1 Cor 2:10-11. One of the Spirit's primary purposes is to guide our daily lives. John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My (Jesus) name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you." 38 | Simple analogy to understand the Trinity | 2 Cor 13:14 | Sir Pent | 120478
My analogy of the Trinity............................................. Many people have asked me over the years about how to understand the idea of the Trinity of God. With my background in science, I have found the best example to be one of the most common molecules on Earth...H2O! Everyone is familiar with H2O, it can be a solid (ice), a liquid (water), or a gas (steam). They all three have different properties, but are still the same molecule. For instance, some forms are easier to see or touch than others. They also have different primary purposes, but are still all the same molecule. Ice keeps things cold, Water quenches our thirst, and Steam can power an engine. Similarly, the Father determines the will of the entire Trinity, Jesus restores our relationship with God, and the Holy Spirit guides and comforts us in our daily lives. Finally, they can all be in the same place at the same time. In science there is a phenomenon called the "triple point". At a certain temperature and pressure, a pure substance can be in all three forms at the same time. For scriptural and scientific support of the ideas in this post please read the first response to it (which can be found at the bottom of the screen). |

39 | Words were ADDED to later manuscripts | Mark 16:9 | Sir Pent | 120431
My answer........................................................ Hi Tim, I'm always glad to see your posts on the forum, although they are less common than they once were. Your question of how do I reconcile all of the variant texts in ancient manuscripts is a bit too broad. However, just like the supposed "contradictions" that people often bring to the forum, I do believe that there is an explanation for each of them if taken one at a time. |
