21 | Self or Others? | Matt 7:14 | zach† | 34767
Dear brother charis; I think the NKJV rendition of this verse helps me to better understand this verse. The NKJV words it this way: Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. I think Luke 13:23-24 is a good cross reference which to me sheds light on the verse in question; Luke 13:23-24 says: Lu 13:23 Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, 24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. So from these two separate texts my thoughts begin to gravitate toward a remnant that are saved. Scripture also refers to a remanant in Luke 12:32 except here it calls them a "little flock" Let me post this verse. Luke 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Now lets jump back to Matthew 7:13 where it says: Mt. 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: So we see that it's the many that are traveling on the broad (wide) road leading to destruction, and the Few (or remnant, little flock) Mt. 7:14 that are going down the less traveled narrow and difficult path or road which leads to life. I would appreciate your comments in return In Christ zach† |

22 | Fallen 'Partakers of the Holy Spirit?' | Heb 6:6 | zach† | 34762
Lifer; I found these comments from Calvinist Charles Spurgeon concerning who these are that are mentioned in Heb. 6:4-6. Spurgeon on Heb. 6:4-6 (Those mentioned in Heb. 6:4-6 are true and real Christian's) "We come to this passage (Hebrews 6:4-6) ourselves with the intention to read it with the simplicity of a child, and whatever we find therein to state it; and if It may not seem to agree with something we have hitherto held, we are prepared to cast away every doctrine of our own, rather than one passage of scripture." (Charles Haddon Spurgeon) "a child reading this passage, would say, that the persons intended by it must be Christians. If the Holy Spirit intended to describe Christians, I do not see that he could have used more explicit terms than there are here." "How can a man be said to be enlightened, and to taste of the heavenly gift, and to be made partaker of the Holy Ghost, without being a child of God?" "I think that I shall be able to show that none but true believers are here described." "First, they are spoken of as having been once enlightened, This refers to the enlightening influence of God's Spirit .... I cannot consider a man truly enlightened unless he is a child of God." "the next thing that God grants to us is a taste of the heavenly gift, by which we understand, the heavenly gift of salvation." "we cannot think that the Holy Spirit would describe an unregenerate man as having been enlightened, and as having tasted of the heavenly gift, No, my brethren, If I have tasted of the heavenly gift, I am one of his." "no man can be a partaker of the Holy Ghost, and yet be unregenerate." 'further..... they have tasted the good word of God .... I say again, if these people be not believers-who are?" "They had received the powers of the world to come.... powers with which the Holy Ghost endows a Christian." "These, we say, whatever may be the meaning of the text, must have been, beyond a doubt, none other than true and real Christians" (all the4 above quote taken from Spurgeon. After having said all that Spurgeon still maintained his Calvinist position of "Perseverance of the Saints" How he could I don't know, seems amazing that he still could. Must have been something in those cigars he smoked In Christ zach† |

24 | What can I teach on Faith? | Romans | zach† | 34360
lillee; here is a Bibical definition of faith. Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Ungers Bible dictionary defines saving faith as “such belief in the Lord Jesus Christ as leads one to submit completely to the authority of Christ, and to put complete and exclusive trust in Him alone for salvation. Faith is being sure and certain about unseen realities solely on the basis of what God says in His word, no matter what may be the external conditions, circumstances, or appearances, the person of faith will trust in God’s promises, rely upon God’s word and obey God’s commands without doubting or wavering, no matter what the cost or sacrifice. Sight is not faith. Hearing is not faith. Neither is feeling faith. But believing when we can neither see, hear, nor feel, is faith. We walk by faith, not by sight 2 Cor. 5:7 Faith is believing what God hath said What can be proved requires no faith to accept. Faith rests upon the character of God, not upon the demonstrations of laboratory of logic. A.W. Tozer Faith is not of ourselves it is a gift from God Eph. 2:8 That means it does not originate within us. God is the author (originator) of our faith Heb. 12:2 Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. HOW DO WE GET FAITH Faith comes by hearing the word of God. Rom. 10:7 Faith and obedience go hand in hand. God requires faith that manifests itself in obedience Heb 6:12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (Saving faith is also an obedient faith. Faith and obedience are not contradictory. Jesus is the “author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.” Heb. 5:9) FAITH IS NOT just an intellectual assent to certain ideas or to historical truth. Neither is faith feeling. We walk by faith not by sight or physical senses. In Christ zach† |

25 | Is there more to salvation than this | Romans | zach† | 34358
walker; Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Our responsibility is to repent and believe. Of course once we become born-again Christian's we have the Holy Spirit indwelling us. Our bodies are His temple (1 Cor. 6:19-20) and as temples they are to be kept clean for the Master's use. We are to DAILY submit, and surrender ourselves to His molding influences. The Holy Spirit operates in us as we co-operate with Him. We need to love Him and others and follow His teachings and serve one another in the capacity in which He has gifted you and enabled and empowered you. We are to spend time with God in prayer, and in His word. We cannot know the will of God, if we neglect the word of God. And our lives should take root in Him, mature and bring forth fruit for His glory. I could go on and on, but hopefully this helps answer your ? In Christ zach† |

26 | how can we loose our salvation. | NT general Archive 1 | zach† | 34351
etta; Here are just a few of the many verses concerning this topic; They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for awhile believe, and in time of temptation FALL away. (Lk. 8:13 Mark 4:16-17) Heb 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. Rom 11:21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Rom 11:22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. But it is happened unto them For if after they have escaped the pollution's of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than after they have known, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. (2 Pet. 2:20-22) For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. (Heb. 6:4-6 NASB) 1Tim 5:12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. 1Tim 5:15 For some are already turned aside after Satan. Rev. 2:4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Joh 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. zach† |

27 | Practical definition of 'forsake?' | Bible general Archive 1 | zach† | 33927
charis; I apreciate you reply; Let me answer a few of your questions to me as best I can. To me "forsake" means to turn our backs to something. Forsaking in my understanding of it is something that happens over a long period of time. With the individual, it begins with "grieving or making sad the Holy Spirit through our sins. To continue sinning which is called "willfully sinning" Heb 10:26 results in several things taking place. First we begin on a path in which we are drifting from the faith. Secondly; our hearts are becoming hardened. Thirdly; If we continue in this path there comes a time when our consciences becomes seared, and then the final step in this process is departing from the faith which can also be called apostasy. And that time we have "Quenched the Holy Spirit" To "Quench" means to extinguish or put out the spark of spiritual life which we began with. How much time it actually takes for this full process to reach maturity, I cannot say. It is a process that takes time. But let me finish by saying: God is not the one who forsakes us, rather it is we who forsake Him. God is faithful, and keeps His covenants and promises, yet man has shown that he often can be unfaithful and a covenant breaker. We need to daily "abide" submit ourselves unto Him" and "yield" ourselves to His molding process, so we can be clean vessels for the Master's use. But this too is a daily process. In Christ; zach |

28 | What is the best version of the Bible? | Bible general Archive 1 | zach† | 33567
WHICH BIBLE VERSION The story is told of four ministers discussing the pros and cons of various Bible translations and paraphrases. Eventually each stated which version, in his opinion, is the best. The first minister said he used the King James because the Old English style is beautiful and produces the most reverent picture of the Holy Scriptures. The second said he preferred the New American Standard Bible because he felt it comes nearer to the original Greek and Hebrew texts. The third minister said his favorite was the paraphrased Living Bible because his congregation was young, and it related to them in a practical way. All three men waited while the fourth minister sat silently. Finally he said, "I guess when it comes to translations and paraphrased editions of the Bible, I like my Dad's translation best. He put the Word of God into practice every day. It was the most convincing translation I've ever seen." . |

30 | do we have any free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | zach† | 33355

31 | predestination - free will or God | John | zach† | 33285
Let me simply answer your question with a quote that helps me with this topic. The quote goes like this: God is Sovereign, but in His Sovereignty He chooses not to violate man's free will to accept or reject Him. Though He knows the choice before we make it. And one more good quote to consider on this topic goes like this: I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew, He moved my soul to seek Him, seeking me. ‘Twas not I that found O Savior true, No, I was found of Thee. |

32 | Explain John 15:6 | John | zach† | 33282
John 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. In order to better understand this verse you have to go back to verses 1 and 2 Verse 2 mentions 2 different types of branches, which are "in Him" (meaning in Christ, and to be in Him is to be His. But we see in verse 2 the mention of one type of branch in Him which does not bear fruit. It doesn't produce anything when it should because it is not abiding and drawing life from the vine, and has become complacent, and is also in danger of being cut off from the vine, and a branch separated from the vine no longer draws nourishment from it's main life giving source, and through that process begins to dry up and wither. It is no longer green and growing. I'm sure you have seen how a branch cut from a tree over time begins to drop it's leaves and become dry and brittle. Thats what happens to us if we don't continue to abide in Him. Abide means to remain or stay connected. Once the branch becomes dry it then is only useful for the fire. Green braches don't burn well, but cut off non-producing branches will. |

36 | "Born-again Christian" redundant? | John 3:3 | zach† | 32854
I personally believe there are TRUE born-again Christian's, and then there are those people who claim to be Christian, who have not been born-again, and have some false conception of what born-again means. For instance: some people think that if your water baptized, then that constitutes that you are born-again. But I believe they fail to see the difference between being baptized which is a type of burial. Being born-again is not a burial, but rather is a birth. There is a big difference between a burial and a birth. In John Chapter 3 being born of the water refers to ones physical birth. We were in our mother's watery womb and then the water broke and you came forth born physically from that watery womb. Secondly being born of the Spirit refers to our spiritual birth. Only God can give us spiritual life. We cannot give ourselves spiritual life, because we were dead spiritually, and a dead spiritual corpse cannot do anything to produce life in itself. The life giving source must come from outside of us. The same way we had no say in our physically birth, we likewise play no role or part in our spiritual birth.
37 | do we have any free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | zach† | 3099
Read Revelation 22:17 and you will clearly see that it says: "whosoever WILL" Rev. 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. WE have choice to make. We have to repent. God does not do our repenting for us. We have to believe. No one believes for us. Thats part of what is entailed in the term "Free will" and it is God given.
