21 | What day do YOU attend church? | Col 2:16 | djconklin | 25511
"What day do you attend church?" You are assuming that I go to church. Much like many "commentators" assume that they know what Col. 2:16-17 is talking about. Tit-for-tat and it won't hurt as much as (well, that assumes you don't put your foot in it): what is Col.2:16-17 about? |

22 | What day do YOU attend church? | Col 2:16 | djconklin | 25512
"Please know that we are not trying to mean or anything. Those of us that have been around for a while have had to fight tooth and nail for clear Biblical statements. You might say that we desire 'hot or cold' and 'yes or no' answers, because there are so many 'lukewarm' and 'maybe' answers that are not answers." Sorry, but I have been attacked so frequently by my fellow Christians that I am quite leery of going beyond what the Bible says. |

23 | what sabbath does it refer to? | Col 2:16 | djconklin | 25514
Very good question! Too bad the others didn't catch on to that one! The key is to look at how the word "heorte" was used in the LXX; it turns out that you'll find the same answer if you take very careful note how the words "chaq" and "mo'ed" are used in the Hebrew text. Hint: it wouldn't makes sense to use the word "heorte" (feast in English) to refer to a day of fasting (such as, the Day of Atonement and the feast of Trumpets--both of which are?).
24 | Who are 'others?' | Col 2:16 | djconklin | 25517
"Did three members of your flock send you encouraging mail about your sermon on Saturday (or Sunday)?" I don't have a church; I said I was trained as a pastor (i.e., I know how to do what they are supposed to do; the pity is that many church members don't want to learn how to study the Bible for all it is worth. Apparently, they want to be spoon-fed.). I posted a study on my web site; none of my sermons that I have ever preached are posted anywhere. There is a distinct difference between the two--the study should undergird and support the sermon. ---- "Did three members of this forum send you mail to the effect that they understood your point on this thread?" Yes and encouraged me as well. They looked at my study and read it. One really, really liked my bibliography. He said that that alone was worth the visit. |

25 | djconklin, Worship on Sabbath in Bible? | Col 2:16 | djconklin | 25649
It was assumed in earlier texts; but,in Leviticus 23:3 it says "Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings." Note the words "holy convocation". |

26 | can a woman be in authority? | 1 Tim 2:12 | djconklin | 27887
Authority on what? What was Paul talking about here? Was he saying that a woman couldn't teach chemistry, physics, calculus, physiology, psychology, or a foreign language? Some people have taken this verse to such extremes that they believe a woman shouldn't be allowed to vote or drive a car. Did you know that the hermeneutics of the traditionalists is the same as those who advocated slavery? See Willard Swartley's book Slavery, Sabbath, War and Women. For more study on this issue see the bibliography of material that I have read at http://biblestudy.iwarp.com |

27 | Popular opinion? or Scripture? | 1 Tim 2:12 | djconklin | 27892
"Rom 16:1 "I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea;" This was the only passage I could find concerning Phoebe. I don't see a mention of her being a deacon in this passage." As I recall the Greek that Paul wrote has diakoinos--the feminine of deacon. --- "1 Tim 3:12 "Deacons must be husbands of only one wife," Actually what the Greek says (assuming I remember correctly) translated literally into English is "one man woman". One speaker noted that when he was at home in Indiana it meant one thing, when he studied for his doctorate in France it was interepreted differently, and when he was a missionary in Africa it meant something else. When I studied this verse I found something like 5 different meanings--which one is the right one and how do we know it is right? |
