27 | Valid 'gifts?' | Eph 4:11 | Shelly | 144187
I believe they are still valid today - we see them in our own church here; I think they should be evident in all (growing) churches. NIV Study Bible notes says: Eph 4:11, 12 Our oneness in Christ does not destroy our individuality. The Holy Spirit has given each Christian special gifts for building up the church. Now that we have these gifts, it is crucial to use them. Are you spiritually mature, exercising the gifts God has given you? If you know what your gifts are, look for opportunities to serve. If you don't know, ask God to show you, perhaps with the help of your minister or Christian friends. Then, as you begin to recognize your special area of service, use your gifts to strengthen and encourage the church. |

28 | Sin no more? | Ps 51:1 | Shelly | 144186
They can ask for forgiveness, but they really need to repent, which means to turn from their ways, and not go back and do it again. The NIV Study Bible notes says: John 5:14 This man had been lame, or paralyzed, and suddenly he could walk. This was a great miracle. But he needed an even greater miracle--to have his sins forgiven. The man was delighted to be physically healed, but he had to turn from his sins and seek God's forgiveness to be spiritually healed. God's forgiveness is the greatest gift you will ever receive. Don't neglect his gracious offer. |

29 | Why celebrate Ash Wednesday? | Bible general Archive 2 | Shelly | 144185
I think it is a Catholic thing. If you go to their Catholic Dictionary, http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01775b.htm, they offer the following explanation: Ash Wednesday The Wednesday after Quinquagesima Sunday, which is the first day of the Lenten fast. The name dies cinerum (day of ashes) which it bears in the Roman Missal is found in the earliest existing copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary and probably dates from at least the eighth century. On this day all the faithful according to ancient custom are exhorted to approach the altar before the beginning of Mass, and there the priest, dipping his thumb into ashes previously blessed, marks the forehead -- or in case of clerics upon the place of the tonsure -- of each the sign of the cross, saying the words: "Remember man that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return." The ashes used in this ceremony are made by burning the remains of the palms blessed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. In the blessing of the ashes four prayers are used, all of them ancient. The ashes are sprinkled with holy water and fumigated with incense. The celebrant himself, be he bishop or cardinal, receives, either standing or seated, the ashes from some other priest, usually the highest in dignity of those present. In earlier ages a penitential procession often followed the rite of the distribution of the ashes, but this is not now prescribed. There can be no doubt that the custom of distributing the ashes to all the faithful arose from a devotional imitation of the practice observed in the case of public penitents. But this devotional usage, the reception of a sacramental which is full of the symbolism of penance (cf. the cor contritum quasi cinis of the "Dies Irae") is of earlier date than was formerly supposed. It is mentioned as of general observance for both clerics and faithful in the Synod of Beneventum, 1091 (Mansi, XX, 739), but nearly a hundred years earlier than this the Anglo-Saxon homilist Ælfric assumes that it applies to all classes of men. "We read", he says, in the books both in the Old Law and in the New that the men who repented of their sins bestrewed themselves with ashes and clothed their bodies with sackcloth. Now let us do this little at the beginning of our Lent that we strew ashes upon our heads to signify that we ought to repent of our sins during the Lenten fast. And then he enforces this recommendation by the terrible example of a man who refused to go to church for the ashes on Ash Wednesday and who a few days after was accidentally killed in a boar hunt (Ælfric, Lives of Saints, ed. Skeat, I, 262-266). It is possible that the notion of penance which was suggested by the rite of Ash Wednesday was reinforced by the figurative exclusion from the sacred mysteries symbolized by the hanging of the Lenten veil before the sanctuary. But on this and the practice of beginning the fast on Ash Wednesday see LENT. |

30 | What is required for Salvation? | John 17:3 | Shelly | 140057
Romans 10:9-10 [9] That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Jesus said, in Luke 13:5 "I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish." |

31 | Where's the verse , " It's not about us | Col 1:16 | Shelly | 139955
I can't find "It's not about us," but I have heard of the phrase "It's not about me" before, but I don't think that's scripture either. The following verse is one that says it's all about God: Col. 1:16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. |

32 | in Revelations."You should beat your chi | Rev 2:23 | Shelly | 138021
The only scripture I can find is Jesus talking about striking an evil person's child (not about us beating our own children). Rev. 2:23 "I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds." Regarding the doctor (Luke was a doctor), I think she should pray for healing, but until that happens, she should take medication. Col. 4:14 Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and Demas send greetings. Luke 5:31 Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. And as for an unordained minister, I wouldn't call him a pastor. |

33 | Can 2 people say vows and be married? | Heb 13:4 | Shelly | 137881
I imagine different countries have different laws in regards to marriage. What country do these people live in? In my country, you can't just say vows and be married - it has to be done with a registered marriage celebrant. If they have never been properly married, then there is no divorce either. Here's one scripture about marriage - Hebrews 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. |

34 | I need verses that say God is the ONLY 1 | Mal 2:10 | Shelly | 137315
Deut. 4:35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides him there is no other. Deut. 4:39 Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other. 1 Kings 8:60 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other. Isaiah 44:8 Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one." Isaiah 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, Isaiah 45:14 This is what the LORD says: "The products of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush, and those tall Sabeans-- they will come over to you and will be yours; they will trudge behind you, coming over to you in chains. They will bow down before you and plead with you, saying, 'Surely God is with you, and there is no other; there is no other god.' " Isaiah 45:18 For this is what the LORD says-- he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited-- he says: "I am the LORD, and there is no other. Isaiah 45:22 "Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. Isaiah 46:9 Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. Joel 2:27 Then you will know that I am in Israel, that I am the LORD your God, and that there is no other; never again will my people be shamed. Mark 12:32 "Well said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. |

35 | Eve always blamed for the fall of Man. | Gen 3:12 | Shelly | 137090
I think it's unfortunate that in today's society, a lot of people are always looking for someone else to take the blame, and are not responsible for their own actions. Adam IS accountable for what he did, even though he tried to blame someone else. |

36 | Can catholic man marry a catholic widow | Ps 103:12 | Shelly | 136120
I don't think you will find it in the Bible, because the Bible doesn't even contain the word catholic. Maybe the question should be, "Can a single Christian man be married to a divorced Christian woman?" |

Don't know if you're anywhere near Albury NSW Australia, they have a collection of Bibles on display at the moment (see article in paper below). Mon, Oct 18, 2004 Collection of Bibles museum attraction by HOWARD JONES TIME is running out for Border residents to view a rare collection of old Bibles, including one of the original King James Authorised Version printed in 1611. The Albury Regional Museum has an exhibition of the Bibles, including Lord Hopetouns 103-year-old leather-bound Bible that is still used to swear in governors-general. The museum has borrowed the Bibles from the Bible Societys Arrowsmith Memorial Library of historic scriptures in Sydney but must close the display next Sunday. Among the treasures are a 1495 Latin Vulgate Bible, a 1551 copy of William Tyndales New Testament, and what is thought to be William Shakespeares Bible from 1607. A Welsh Bible on display once belonged to Mary Jones, the same person whose struggle to buy a Bible in 1813 encouraged a London group to start the British and Foreign Bible Society, now known as the Bible Society. |
