21 | Similarities of Moses and Jesus? | Bible general Archive 1 | Listener | 35333
Prayon, Great list going. I would echo Ray's comments that the differences should also be mentioned. One good way to illustrate this may be by the following passage, which compares and contrasts Moses and Jesus: John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. Actually there are many passages which relate Jesus to Moses. Moses hidden in the cleft of the Rock, Moses' prayer brings water from the Rock, etc. The only additional similarities that come to mind is that both were known for humility, both assembled 70 elders/disciples (also each led 12 tribes/12 apostles), and both were called out of Egypt: Numbers 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.) John 13:5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Numbers 11:16 ¶And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee. Luke 10:1 ¶After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Hosea 11:1 ¶When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. Matthew 2:15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. Listener |

22 | What is the Greek word? | Bible general Archive 1 | Listener | 35180
The most common controversy that I am aware of in this regard pertains to the following passage: Isaiah 7:14 - Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. There has been a great deal of argument over the Hebrew word translated virgin. Some scholars say the word should be translated "young woman", others say "virgin" is the correct translation. I would suggest, ever so humbly, that the average non-Bible scholar with enough sense to come in out of the rain can look at the context and settle the matter in their own mind. Choice 1) Isaiah 7:14 - ... the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a [young woman] shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel [God with us]. Choice 2) Isaiah 7:14 - ... the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a [virgin] shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel [God with us]. Which makes the most sense to you? Thanks, Listener |

23 | The Restrainer - Revisited! | 2 Thess 2:7 | Listener | 35154
Tim, I hope you won't mind if I try to resurrect this thread on 2 Thess 2:7. You provided some good info on the most prevalent ideas out there on the identity of the "restrainer". I would appreciate some feedback regarding my thoughts on the subject. 1) This is a controvertial passage with many possible interpretations, therefore it is not a good idea to build doctrines using this passage as a proof text. 2) I think the passage may be a little more straightforward than is often assumed. If we stick to the basics of looking at the context and comparing scripture with scripture I think the knot may unravel itself. The context tells us: It is the Antichrist that it is the "secret power of lawlessness" that is currently being restrained. This is related to "the man of lawlessness" and "the coming of the lawless one". This is clearly referring to the spirit of antichrist and the antichrist, also referred to as the beast in the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. So the question which follows, if we are seeking the identity of the restrainer, is: Who is restraining the antichrist/spirit of antichrist now? To answer this question, let's see where the Bible says the antichrist/beast is now, and how he is being restrained. Revelation 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. Revelation 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. So it is clear from these passages that the beast "is not, and yet is" and that he is in the bottomless pit. Let's look at one more related passage. The context of the following verse is a time yet future, the thousand year reign of Christ on earth. The verse is usefull for our study, however, because it tells us something of the nature and purpose of the bottomless pit. Revelation 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. So the bottomless pit is a place where the antichrist will be "shut up" and "sealed". Whatever else it may be, it is a place where the antichrist is "restrained". Who is doing the restraining? Two more passages shed additional light. Revelation 9:1 ¶And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. Revelation 20:1 ¶And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. So it would appear from these passages that it is the one who posesses the key, the angel or He who gives the key to the angel, is the one restraining. Now we are back to the original thought on this passage. Some would like to use the passage as a proof text for a pre-trib rapture. But "what saith the scripture?" Daniel 7:25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. 2 Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. Revelation 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 9 If any man have an ear, let him hear. Matthew 13:20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; 21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. 24 | Abortion for medical reason ??????? | Ex 20:14 | Listener | 32595
I can only imagine how you must feel. Please accept my sympathy and good will toward you and your family. I have very little medical knowledge but I feel compelled to share what I have learned through experience: 1) Men, including doctors and clergy don't know everything. Even when they act as if they are certain, they are sometimes wrong. We can only rely on God and His word. 2) Men, including doctors and clergy have a strong tendency to act in their own self interest. For doctors this means minimizing the possibilities of lawsuits and complications while maximizing profits. This is especially true if you have good insurance. For you, this means you must realize this bias in their advice, and make every effort to give priority to your family over yourself, as I trust you are now doing. 3) Get a second and a third opinion. This may clear things up immeasurably. When you ask the next doctor, try not to bias him/her with the previous doctor's recommendations. Proverbs 19:21 ¶There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. May God bless, comfort, and heal your wife. |

25 | Will all of Israel be saved? | Rom 11:26 | Listener | 32592
Prophetically, the Romans 11:26 may be related to the passage below. This passage indicates that although only a remnant (1/3) of Israel will survive until Christ's return, the remnant will be entirely saved. Even this may not refer to each individual but the nation as a group. The greater context makes it clear that the time frame is Christ's return. Zechariah 13:8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. 9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God. |

26 | Does the OT talk about resurrection? | Matt 22:30 | Listener | 16881
Steve, About the resurrection, one place is Daniel 12:1-2 I can't think of any relating resurrection to marriage. Daniel 12 1 "At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people--everyone whose name is found written in the book--will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt |

27 | going to heaven | 1 Cor 15:1 | Listener | 16450
The following verses indicate that when we "sleep" in Christ we (our souls only) go to be with him. When our bodies are resurected at the second coming (1 Thess. 4:16-18) they are made perfect and we are complete. 2 Corinthians 5 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15 50 I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed-- 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. |

28 | Is Israel still chosen? | Joel 3:20 | Listener | 16439
You are absolutely correct. The scriptures promise that David's kingdom will be established forever. They promise that God will establish Israel as the most blessed kingdom of all time. God is not finished with Israel. The very existance of Israel is a marvelous witness to the faithfullness of God. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob has preserved Israel through the terrorism of the Muslims, the holocaust, the diaspora - and they will always remain as a witness to the faithfulness of God. The verse below is just one example. The minor prophets are full of kingdom promises specific to Israel. 20But Judah shall abide forever, And Jerusalem from generation to generation. 21For I will acquit them of the guilt of bloodshed, whom I had not acquitted; For the LORD dwells in Zion |

29 | Will I go to heavan | Eph 2:8 | Listener | 16427
When this type of doubt comes to me there are three things that give me assurance. The first one is the book of 1 John. It is short and straightforward, and addresses this issue. One verse is quoted below. The second thing that helps me is to confess my sin, and appeal before God to the finished work of Christ, and submit to Him as Lord. This is much like my first real prayer when I accepted Jesus into my heart. The antidote for doubts about salvation is to walk with Jesus day by day. To spend time alone with Him (in Bible reading and prayer), to worship Him with other believers, to walk in loving obedience to Him and to share His love with others. I am not consistent, but find that when I do the above it develops the "personal relationship", and minimizes the doubts of salvation. May God bless you as you seek His face. 1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. |

30 | Word of God equal to food in NT | Matt 4:4 | Listener | 16423
There are a couple of passages where milk is synonymous with elementary principles of God's word. Meat (or solid food) seems to refer to advanced principles of the word: 1 Peter 2 2as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, Hebrews 5 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 1 Corinthians 3 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. |

31 | Word of God equal to food in NT | Matt 4:4 | Listener | 16422
The following refers to Jesus, the Living Word of God (John 1): John 6 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." 52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. |
