21 | What does God owe the Devil? | Luke 4:6 | Hank | 209519
Dear Finder :: Your question is an excellent one and how I wish I could render an excellent answer to it! The problem of evil is a subject which laymen and theologians alike have pondered over down through the years, only to conclude that man is limited indeed when he seeks to know fully the mind of the infinite, transcendent God. ...... But God has revealed in His word much about evil, Satan, the fall of man and the way to redemption. I believe you will find an article at the web site, gotquestions.org, particularly helpful. Here's the URL: http://www.gotquestions.org/God-vs-Satan.html ..... While you are at this web site, you may wish to poke around among a large number of articles on evil, Satan, the fall of man, sin, redemption, etc. Just use their search engine to explore the site. I've found this web site to be handy, useful, doctrinally and theologically sound, and user friendly. I hope you like it and receive from it at least a measure of help with your question. The editors frequently recommend some excellent resource materials for those would like to delve deeper into various subjects. --Hank
22 | Changing my skin color | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 209502
Dear bermudianchristian :: Thanks for sharing your thoughts. While not specifically biblically oriented, in a broader sense they perhaps are. My guess -- please set me straight if I've wrong -- is that you are a young person. This thing that has been called "the herd instinct" is especially strong among young folks -- everybody wants to be, think, do, and look like his peers. This usually passes with time. ..... When I read your post, my mind went back nearly 50 years to an experience I had when I was in the U.S. Army. For a time I was attached to a medical unit at an Army hospital in Aurora, Colorado and there met a fine old gentleman, a patient at the hospital, who was a black man. His skin color was not brown but quite black. His hair was as white as snow, his teeth white and even, his smile engaging, his voice resonant -- in short, he was a strikingly handsome man for his age. I visited him on several occasions. He was gentle, wise, and seemed to enjoy our visits very much. We talked of many things as we sat in our comfortable chairs basking in the sun on the spacious lawn that surrounded the hospital building. The years have erased the memory of the content of most of those pleasant conversations but this much remains. One day this kind old gentlemen observed that people should be content with the gifts the Lord has given them and thank Him for life itself and all its wonders and marvels. Then he said something like this: "You know, I think it's so foolish that black people want to straighten their hair and bleach their skin trying to turn it white. And white people want to curl their hair and bake their skin in the sun for hours trying to turn it dark." ..... Now I'll close with a verse of Scripture: "Not that I speak in respect of want, but I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content" (Philippians 4:11). May God richly bless you. --Hank
23 | specific antichrist characteristics/desc | Matt 7:15 | Hank | 209378
Dear aherbert :: Usually questions and comments with a strong political overtone are discouraged or simply not allowed on Study Bible Forum. But your question is so worded that it clearly is not designed to elicit a political melee on this Forum, and I believe it deserves an answer. ..... I doubt that there is scarcely a reader of this Forum who has not received one or more of the junk e-mails that you describe in your question. You mentioned that the phrase "according to Revelation" is often employed as a preface to the outlandish text messages that usually follow in this kind of cyber-trash. It is doubtful whether there has ever been a book, divine or secular, that has been more ill used and misinterpreted than the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. False teachers galore have made a career, and often a lucrative one, of scaring gullible people out of their skins with dire threats that they attribute to the Book of Revelation. And this scare tactic about the mysterious "man from out of the East," this charmer, this charismatic "antichrist" is merely the dregs of the same sour old wine dressed up in new wineskins. .... You ask where all these people are getting these specific details about the antichrist. My answer is that there are a lot of people on the internet who have vivid imaginations and practically no knowledge of Scripture. .... You need to learn what the Bible says and doesn't say about antichrist. May I suggest you kick off your quest by reading the article "Who Is the Antichrist?" on the following website: http://www.gotquestions.org/antichrist.html ..... This is a conservative and responsible website. Next, read the "antichrist" entry in one or more good Bible dictionaries. Then, do an search of the word "antichrist" in an exhaustive Bible concordance. There is a free one right here on this website of the NASB. The editors of gotquestions.org recommend a source book on the antichrist which you may wish to check out when you read the article I've recommended. ...... The purveyors of false teaching rely for their success on the ignorance and gullibility of their readers and listeners, so let's not be slack with learning what the truth is by diligent application to the study of Scripture. You could do worse than to make 2 Timothy 2:15 your motto and high aim in life. ..... Welcome aboard the SBF website. --Hank
24 | want your opionion | 1 Thess 4:15 | Hank | 209370
Dear Jack :: In welcoming you to Study Bible Forum, I'd also like to point out that srbaegon, jlhetrick and Azurelaw have given you biblical references to your question but have not given you their opinions. ...... So, since it is an opinion you want, suppose I come forth with unmitigated brashness and say to you that it is my opinion that Christ will come at 6:46 Greenwich Mean Time on the morning of August 19, 2022. I have no Scripture with which to back up my opinion. I can't even back it up using the Daily Horoscope from my morning newspaper. And, to be perfectly honest, I can't even back the opinion up with anything more substantial than thin air. So what possible benefit can you or anyone else derive from my opinion? I don't even believe it myself, because to tell the truth, I have no such wild opinion as that. As with all other matters of religious faith and practice, I base my belief on the Second Coming of our Lord soley on what the Bible says, and it says that no one knows the day or the hour (see Matthew 25:1-13). ...... Please consider the all-important difference between asking "What is your opinion about thus and so?" and "What does the Bible teach about thus and so?" --Hank
25 | God Punished New Orleans with Katrina | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 209308
Myrtle2 :: I can't find New Orleans or Hurricane Katrina mentioned in Scripture. :-) ...... Any attempt to answer these kinds of questions calls for speculation. We hold that it is far better to learn as much as possible of what God has revealed in His word instead of speculating about what He has not revealed. I've been studying the Bible for more than 50 years and yet have done little more than scratch the surface of God's revealed truth. So that has left me precious little time to engage in speculation and guesswork. Perhaps some day ages and ages hence I may speculate a bit, but I simply don't have time for it now. --Hank

Livingword :: Welcome and thanks for your question. ..... As regarding your first question, Scripture does not say how much time elapsed before Adam and Eve bore Cain and Abel. Scripture does make it clear that Cain and Abel were not the only two children of Adam and Eve (see Genesis 5:4). Finally, the answer to your last question, "where did the rest of the other people come from?" is this: God created only two people, Adam and Eve (see Genesis 2:7-25). All other human beings who have ever lived and all those who are living today are descendents of the one man (Adam) and the one woman (Eve) whom God created. --Hank

30 | What main scripture book of romans? | Romans | Hank | 209107
gapeach :: If you are asking for a single verse from Romans that sets forth the theme of the whole epistle, I'd suggest Romans 1:16: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek" (ESV). ...... The power of the gospel is the power of God Himself. The effect of the gospel is salvation. The scope of the gospel is universal. But the condition is limited to those who believe, to those who have faith in Jesus Christ. --Hank

32 | Mathew 5.6 | Matt 5:6 | Hank | 208817
Hi, Dcmartin :: In Matthew 5:6 we have the fourth of the list of "Beatitudes" that are part of our Lord's discourse that we call "The Sermon on the Mount." You will note that in each of the Beatitudes, Jesus is not showing how to be saved; He is describing the characteristics of those who have been saved. Note in verses 1 and 2 of Matthew 5 that it was His disciples who came to Him and it was they whom He taught. He begins by saying, Blessed (which means happy) are the poor in spirit, and continues with blessed are they that mourn, blessed are the meek, and in verse 6, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled." These characterists of the true disciple of Jesus -- the poor in spirit, the mournful, the meek, they who hunger for righteousness -- are the very opposites of the proud, or haughty in spirit, or the self-righteousness of the Pharisees. Jesus is describing as happy not those who are prompous and self-righteous, but those who, as regenerate disciples of our Lord, recognize their own spiritual poverty and yearn for that righteousness which only God can give them. ..... And Jesus says, "for they shall be filled." The Greek word for filled (chortazo) means to experience a complete and total satisfaction, a satisfaction such as the world is incapable of providing. In the beautiful words of Psalm 107:9, the psalmist declares, "For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness." ..... Nearly 500 years ago Teresa of Avila summed it up succinctly in four words: "God alone is sufficient." --Hank

34 | Misprint, in Forum Bible (NASB) | Matt 18:15 | Hank | 208497
IMM :: There are no misprints in the NASB translation of the verse you cite, Matthew 18:15. If you have a copy of an edition of the NASB 1995 Update that provides translators' notes in the margins, you will find an explanatory note on this verse that reads as follows: "Late mss add, against you" The marginal note refers back to the text and clearly indicates that this insertion appears immediately after the words "If your brother sins" in some late manuscripts. But obviously the phrase "against you" does not appear in the manuscript text that the NASB translators followed. I checked this verse in other versions. KJV, NKJV, ESV, and NIV all retain the phrase "against you." The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) also retains the phrase in its text but appends this footnote: other mss omit 'against you.' ..... I agree with you that the phrase 'against you' seems to fit the context, but being no translator or Greek scholar at all, and having to struggle to write even passable English, I confess that these waters are much too deep for me. :-) You can voice your concern to the Lockman Foundation and perhaps they will respond. They did to me some years ago when I raised a few questions involving what I thought was NASB's unconventional rendering of the last six words of Ecclesiastes 12:13. ..... Over the years I've also had a few questions about certain odd locutions in the King James Bible, but decided it would be most unkind to disturb the venerable translators' peaceful slumbers. :-) --Hank
35 | Trying to Choose a Study Bible | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 207873
Dear Dimmyimmy :: Thanks for your question, welcome to Study Bible Forum, and, by the way, I like your user name. It has a certain charm about it. ..... Now to your question. My pick of the short list to which you have narrowed your search for a study Bible is the MacArthur Study Bible, hands down. I bought a copy shortly after its initial publication and over the years have found myself going to it more frequently than to any of the other half dozen study Bibles that I own. The text of my copy is New King James, but it is now available in NASB, which you pointed out in your question. Both translations are excellent and both are more literally accurate than either of the other two you mentioned, the NIV for the NIV Study Bible and the NLT for what you term the Life Study Bible, by which I surmise you mean Life Application Study Bible. Both the NIV and NLT follow a translation philosophy they call 'dynamic equivalence' which is a fancy term for paraphrase. ..... But if the translation used is of paramount importance to you -- and I am convinced it should be for everyone -- you may wish to consider the NASB Study Bible, which has essentially the same annotations as the NIV Study Bible. And the Life Application Study Bible is published using versions besides the NLT. I'm familiar with the annotations in both the Life Application and the NIV Study Study Bibles, and in my view both are fairly sound and conservative but somewhat weak and "generic" on basic doctrinal issues, whereas MacArthur leans toward the essential doctrines of reformed theology. ..... My suggestion to you would be to gain access, if possible, to each of these; to observe and compare what they offer, and then to decide which one you like best. I render this advice with a measure of caution, however; because if you are a hopeless collector of Bibles like me, you're likely to end up with all three if your purse permits. :-) At any rate, best wishes for a happy quest, and if you have further questions that you think the Forum might be able to help you with, check back with us now that you know our address. ..... At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'll repeat that my choice among the three is MacArthur. --Hank

38 | thanks | Matt 5:3 | Hank | 207584
Dcmartin :: The antecedent of "theirs" in Matthew 5:3 is "the poor in spirit." In other words, "theirs" refers to "the poor in spirit." In this verse, as with all the other Beatitudes in this segment from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, "blessed" means "happy." And to be among those whom Jesus calls "the poor in spirit" is to be the very opposite of those who have a proud and haughty spirit. The redeemed of God have been humbled by His grace, have acknowledged their sin, have surrended their lives to the Sovereign Lord on whom they solely depend to save them. The verse concludes with the words "for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." As used here, it is a general designation of the ultimate abode of the regenerate believers in Christ, the dwelling place of the saved, the eternal home of the redeemed in Christ. (Cf. Luke 6:20-23). --Hank
