21 | some reject, others obey the gospel WHY? | Acts 8:13 | John Reformed | 69756
Dear Tim, I apologize for noy making my point clearer. What I mean to say is that the knowledge of the truth does not (necessarily) equate with the believing of the truth. How is it that we came to believe? It was by the work of God, was it not? We recieved the gospel call and for some inexplicable (inexplicable to human reasoning) reason we understood that the gospel was true and that we were in dire need of Christ to cover our nakedness before a Holy God! It took a miracle of grace, working by means of a God given faith, to transform us from spiritual death to spiritual life. While knowledge was an essential element of our conversion, it was not knowledge alone that was the cause of it. It is the power of God using knowledge of the truth as a means of salvation that made the difference. For instance: I meet a person and learn they are unsaved. I present them with the knowledge of the truth (the gospel). They recieve it but consider it foolishness. I have often wondered why some recieve the gospel but others reject it. Why? Are some men more inclined toward God than others? And if this is so, why is it so? I believe that which makes the difference is grace operating through the gift of faith. This is what ephesians 2 teaches me. How would you answer from Scripture? John |

22 | Is God obliged by the prayer of faith? | Rom 8:28 | John Reformed | 68422
What if our request is contrary to God's will for us? Dear inmyheart, I pray for many different things from God. I prayed earnestly for God to heal my dog. But he became so sick and miserable that I felt it was God's will for me to spare him further suffering, and so I had the vet put him down. Is it not best to seek God's will, rather than insisting that He must honor my prayers? The problem I have with "wof" doctrine is that it presents a formlaic kind of religion: If you do this plus that God will answer your prayer by granting to you that for which you have prayed. But what if you pray for something that God does not want you to have? John |

24 | Is praying to created beings scriptural? | Bible general Archive 1 | John Reformed | 62728
Dear Emmaus, I have a question regarding your closing paragraph which speaks of a prayer to Michael the archangel. The Scripture teaches that we live our lives "corum deo" and have access directly to the Throne of Grace. Therefore, why would one seek, or even desire, to "pray" to a finite creature when he may make his request known directly to God Almighty? I have not found any teaching in the Bible that warrents prayer to a mere creature. John |

25 | Can belief be excluded from exegesis | Ephesians | John Reformed | 62408
Is it possible for a person to answer a question, make a statement related to the Bible or interpret even one verse but not have their theological persuasion influence what they say? If your answer is Yes, please explain how one is to do this and yet say they have presented the whole truth of God? Thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration of this thorny and difficult question. John John |

27 | What does your church believe? | John 1:1 | John Reformed | 61493
My church believes:A Synopsis of the Beliefs of the Presbyterian Church in America 1. The Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice. 2. There is one God, eternal and self-existing in three persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) who are to be equally loved, honored, and adored. 3. All mankind participated in Adam's fall from his original sinless state and is thus lost in sin and totally helpless. 4. The Sovereign God, for no other reason than His own unfathomable love and mercy, has chosen lost sinners from every nation to be redeemed by the quickening power of the Holy Spirit and through the atoning death and resurrection of His son, Jesus Christ. 5. Those sinners whom the Spirit quickens, come to believe in Christ as Savior by the Word of God, are born again, become sons of God, and will persevere to the end. 6. Justification is by faith and through it the undeserving sinner is clothed with the righteousness of Christ. 7. The goal of God's salvation in the life of the Christian is holiness, good works, and service for the glory of God. 8. At death the Christian's soul passes immediately into the presence of God and the unbeliever's soul is eternally separated from God unto condemnation. 9. Baptism is a sign of God's covenant and is properly administered to children of believers in their infancy as well as to those who come as adults to trust in Christ. 10. Jesus Christ will return to earth, visibly and bodily, at a time when He is not expected, to consummate history and the eternal plan of God. 11. The Gospel of God's salvation in Jesus Christ must be published to all the world as a witness before Jesus Christ returns. John Reformed |

28 | Is God in absolut contrl over all things | Acts 4:24 | John Reformed | 61377
Acts 2:23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. Did God foreknow that Jesus would be crucified because He saw it in the future? And what dies His predetermined plan mean? Is it what Hopes will happen like when we make plans, or does He actually cause it to happen because it is His Sovereign will that shall happen. |

31 | What in the Bible made you a non-christi | 1 Cor 9:25 | John Reformed | 53410
Dear Simchat, I'll be brief. You continually make statements that are unsupportable! You Said: "I know that you have all of the scriptures backing up your claims that you are correct, but so do I as well as the Mormons, JW’s, Jews, Muslims, etc." This is abject nonsense. Having been a professing christian yourself you must be well aware of the arguements that refute the false teaching of the cults. Christian apologetics have successfully addressed these errors throughout church history. Again you said: " I was once a Christian just like you, I believed in all the doctrines you do. But I looked at the scriptures objectively and found something different. Do tell! What did you find that promted you to discard christianity? What was the "revelation" that caused you to embrace this new docrtine? John |

32 | Who are the "any" and "all" in verse 9 | 2 Pet 3:9 | John Reformed | 52915
I believe that the preceeding clause "but is patient toward you" ("you meaning the saints) indicates that the pronoun "any" points back to his audience which are the saints (also called "beloved"). I have persued this with Hank and Tim Moran and they feel "any" and "all" refer to any particular person universally. What say ye? |

37 | Is Limited Atonement a "scandalous" Doc | NT general Archive 1 | John Reformed | 34635
Dear Saints, In my postings thus far I have been attempting to show that the reformed doctrine of Limited Atonement is indeed biblical. I have found it to have been a profitable use of my time and I hope you all have profited as well. I've gained new insight regarding this doctrine and in other areas of Scipture as well. I have learned that much,if not all, the controversy surrounding this "scandalous" doctrine is founded on a fundamental misunderstanding regarding the term ATONEMENT. This misunderstanding seems to have been in existance for at least 140 years. In the course of my research I happened across a theologian by the name of R.L Dabney. It seems that brother Dabney was the chaplain to Stonewall Jackson during the War Between the States. Dabney in his article " The Five Points of Calvinism contends that the problem arises from a confusion over the definition of the term "atonement". This fundamental error promted me to beseech the the saints of this forum to define the term in question. It is my contention that, because this doctrine is one held by Reformed Christians, we are the ones who should be allowed to put forth the definition and that definition alone should be the standard on which the conversation is based. Assuming we all agree, in my next post I will attempt to clarify what atonement means and argue for it's scriptual foundation. In the meantime I earnestly seek your input and guidance. Would'nt it be wonderful if we Christians could actually resolve a breach in our understanding and honor Christ by coming closer together? God Bless you all, John Adams |

38 | From whom does faith originate? | Eph 2:8 | John Reformed | 34105
Dear Bro. Tim The crux of my question is: From whom does faith orignate? Can an unregenerate man (one who is dead in trespasses and sin) find within himself the capacity for faith?, or must it necessarily come from an outside source I believe that we are saved by grace thru faith and even my capacity to believe in Christ was a gift from God. Perhaps I misunderstood your analogy, it seemed to me that God did His part by providing His Son (the bridge) but then we had to do are part by contributing our faith (getting up and crossing the bridge). It is my contention, based on my understanding of Scripture, that formerly I was dead in trespasses and sin; my foolish mind was darkened; etc.(Ro:1). I was without God and was actively in rebellion against Him. Then I was presented with the Gospel and I believed. It must have been the Holy Spirit that gave me a new heart that made faith possible to begin with. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Your Bro. in Christ, John |
