201 | So, to honor lies in married adulthood? | Matt 23:9 | meusing | 39405
Calvin said : The true meaning therefore is, that the honor of a father is falsely ascribed to men, when it obscures the glory of God. we are to honor our parents, but not as substitutes for God. We still have an obligation to our parents, even it they turn agaist us. We can offer them up to God, and serve them as if they are in God's keeping. |

202 | what is does Jesus mean in matt 7:6? | Matthew | meusing | 39399
I like how John Calvin explained this : 6. Give not that which is holy. It is unnecessary to repeat oftener, that Matthew gives us here detached sentences, which ought not to be viewed as a continued discourse. The present instruction is not at all connected with what came immediately before, but is entirely separate from it. Christ reminds the Apostles, and, through them, all the teachers of the Gospel, to reserve the treasure of heavenly wisdom for the children of God alone, and not to expose it to unworthy and profane despisers of his word. But here a question arises: for he afterwards commanded to preach the Gospel to every creature, (Mark 16:15;) and Paul says, that the preaching of it is a deadly savor to wicked men, ( 2 Corinthians 2:16;) and nothing is more certain than that it is every day held out to unbelievers, by the command of God, for a testimony, that they may be rendered the more inexcusable. I reply: As the ministers of the Gospel, and those who are called to the office of teaching, cannot distinguish between the children of God and swine, it is their duty to present the doctrine of salvation indiscriminately to all. Though many may appear to them, at first, to be hardened and unyielding, yet charity forbids that such persons should be immediately pronounced to be desperate. It ought to be understood, that dogs and swine are names given not to every kind of debauched men, or to those who are destitute of the fear of God and of true godliness, but to those who, by clear evidences, have manifested a hardened contempt of God, so that their disease appears to be incurable. In another passage, Christ places the dogs in contrast with the elect people of God and the household of faith, It is not proper to take the children's bread, and give it to dogs, ( Matthew 15:27.) But by dogs and swine he means here those who are so thoroughly imbued with a wicked contempt of God, that they refuse to accept any remedy. Hence it is evident, how grievously the words of Christ are tortured by those who think that he limits the doctrine of the Gospel to those only who are teachable and well-prepared. For what will be the consequence, if nobody is invited by pious teachers, until by his obedience he has anticipated the grace of God? On the contrary, we are all by nature unholy, and prone to rebellion. The remedy of salvation must be refused to none, till they have rejected it so basely when offered to them, as to make it evident that they are reprobate and self-condemned, (aujtokata kritoi,) as Paul says of heretics, ( Titus 3:11.) There are two reasons, why Christ forbade that the Gospel should be offered to lost despisers. It is an open profanation of the mysteries of God to expose them to the taunts of wicked men. Another reason is, that Christ intended to comfort his disciples, that they might not cease to bestow their labors on the elect of God in teaching the Gospel, though they saw it wantonly rejected by wicked and ungodly men. His meaning is lest this inestimable treasure should be held in little estimation, swine and dogs must not be permitted to approach it. There are two designations which Christ bestows on the doctrine of salvation: he calls it holy, and compares it to pearls. Hence we learn how highly we ought to esteem this doctrine. Lest these trample them under their feet. Christ appears to distinguish between the swine and the dogs: attributing brutal stupidity to the swine, and rage to the dogs. And certainly, experience shows, that there are two such classes of despisers of God. Whatever is taught in Scripture, for instance, about the corrupt nature of man, free justification, and eternal election, is turned by many into an encouragement to sloth and to carnal indulgence. Such persons are fitly and justly pronounced to be swine. Others, again, tear the pure doctrine, and its ministers, with sacrilegious reproaches, as if they threw away all desire to do well, all fear of God, and all care for their salvation. Although he employs both names to describe the incurable opponents of the Word of God, yet, by a twofold comparison, he points out briefly in what respect the one differs from the other. |

203 | Threshing floor? | 2 Sam 24:16 | meusing | 39377
The threshing floor was considered Holy because the Angel of the LORD halted there. It is believed that this threshing floor later became the foundation for the temple. also where Abraham obeyed God being willing to sacrifice Isaac there because he believed God's promise so much that he knew that to keep His promise God would have to raise Isaac from the dead. John Gill on his comment on Gen 22.9 said : Mount Moriah. Maimonides (f) says, "it is a tradition in or by the hands of all, that this is the place where David and Solomon built an altar in the threshing floor of Araunah, the Jebusite, and where Abraham built an altar, and bound Isaac on it; and where Noah built one when he came out of the ark, and is the altar on which Cain and Abel offered; and where the first man offered when he was created, and from whence he was created.'' And so the Targum of Jonathan, and other Jewish writers (g). (f) Hilchot Beth Habechirah, c. 2. sect. 1. 2. (g) In Pirke, ut supra. (c. 31.) |

204 | What Book ofthe bible means going forth? | Ex 1:1 | meusing | 39370
John Gill explained : This book is called by the Jews Veelleh Shemoth, from the first words with which it begins, and sometimes Sepher Shemoth, and sometimes only Shemoth. It is by the Septuagint called Exodus, from whom we have the name of Exodus, which signifies "a going out"; see #Lu 9:31, because it treats of the going of the children of Israel out of Egypt; and hence in the Alexandrian copy it is called the Exodus of Egypt; and so the Syriac version entitles it the second book of the law, called "the going out"; and to the same purpose the Arabic version. |

210 | But Satan is our enemy, so how? | Matthew | meusing | 39018
Our focus is to be on God, and to show His love to others. Satan is God's enemy and he will do anything He can do to take our focus off of God. If our enemies are out of Satan's power, they will no longer be our enemies. Eph 6:10 In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [be empowered through your union with Him]; draw your strength from Him [that strength which His boundless might provides]. 11 Put on God's whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil. 12 For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere. 13 Therefore put on God's complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place]. 14 Stand therefore [hold your ground], having tightened the belt of truth around your loins and having put on the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God, 15 And having shod your feet in preparation [to face the enemy with the firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produced by the good news] of the Gospel of peace. [Isa. 52:7.] 16 Lift up over all the [covering] shield of saving faith, upon which you can quench all the flaming missiles of the wicked [one]. 17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword that the Spirit wields, which is the Word of God. 18 Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God's consecrated people). |

211 | sunday the day of sun worship | Mark 2:28 | meusing | 39016
So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. It is the Christian's priviledge to enjoy the first day of the week. How can we rejoice and worship on a day when the Lord of the Sabbath was in the tomb? Would you deny us worshiping the Lord of the Sabbath on the day which He defeated death, sin and the grave and DEMAND that we worship on a day that He was in the grave? |

212 | Christ never did away with the sabbath | Matt 12:8 | meusing | 39001
For the Son of Man is Lord [even] of the Sabbath. "... from the fall to the incarnation God was working; from the incarnation to the cross, God the Son was working; and from Pentecost until now, the Holy Ghost has been working. Assuredly, Christ had no Sabbath when He was upon this earth. true he finished His work - blessedly, gloriously finished it - but where did He spend the Sabbath day? IN THE TOMB! Yes, the Lord Christ - God manifest in the flesh, the Lord of the Sabbath, the Maker and sustainer of heavean and earth - spent the seventh day in the tomb. Has this no voice for us? Does it convey no teaching? Could the Son of God lie in the grave on the seventh day if that day were to be spent in rest and peace, and in the full sense that nothing remained to be done? Impossible! We want no further proof of the impossibility of celebrating a Sabbath than that which is afforded at the grave of Jesus. We may stand beside that grave amazed to find it occupied by such a one on the seventh day; but oh! the reason is obvious. Man is a fallen, ruined, guilty creature. His long career of guilt has ended in crucifying the Lord of glory; and not only crucifying Him but placing a great stone at the mouth of the tomb, to prevent, if possible, His leaving it. And what was man doing while the Son of God was in the grave? HE WAS OBSERVING THE SABBATH DAY! What a thought! Christ in His grave to repair a broken Sabbath, and man attempting to keep the Sabbath as though ie were not broken at all! It was MAN's Sabbath, and not God's. It was a Sabbath without Christ - an empty, powerless, worthless , because Christless and Godless, form." CHM "Notes on the Pentateuch" p.24 You may celebrate a Christless Sabbath if you want to rejoice over what man did to Christ, I celebrate the truimph of God over death, sin and the grave on the first day of the week. |

213 | Biblical revelations in Genesis 3? | Genesis | meusing | 38604
Man sinned; Man was judged; Salvation was promised 3:15 The sinner was redeemed 3:21 "We have here, in figure, the great doctrine of divine righteousness set forth. The robe which God provided was a effectual covering, because He provided it just as the apron was an ineffectual covering. Moreover, God's coat was founded upon blood-shedding; Adam's apron was not. So also now, God's righteousness isset forth in the cross; man's righteousness is set forth in the works - the sin-stained works - of his own hands. when Adam stood clothed in the coat of skin he could not say he was naked, not had he any occasion to hide himself. The sinner may feel perfectly at rest when, by faith, he knows that God has clothed him; but to feel at rest till then, can only be the result of presumtion or ignorance. To know that the dress I wear, and in which I appear before God is of His own providing, must set my heart at perfect rest. There can be no true, permanent rest in aught else." 215 | Am I lost for eternity because of sin | 1 John 1:9 | meusing | 38149
Read the verse over, and over and tell yourself that it is true. Remember John 3:16 then read John 20:31. Paul told us of his struggle with this in Rom 7. He then wrote Rom. 8.1 Our salvation is based on what Jesus has done, not how we feel about it. |
