202 | Is this a discussion group? | 2 Tim 2:23 | kalos | 5754
Did you know? According to the Lockman Foundation, StudyBibleForum.com is "not a discussion group or topical survey" (http://www.gospelcom.net/lockman/studybibleforum/about.php). 2 Tim 2:14 "Of these things put them in remembrance, charging [them] in the sight of the Lord, that they strive not about words, to no profit, to the subverting of them that hear."; 2 Tim 2:16 "But shun profane babblings: for they will proceed further in ungodliness."; 2 Tim 2:23 "But foolish and ignorant questionings refuse, knowing that they gender strifes." 2 Peter 3:16 "as also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; wherein are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unstedfast wrest, as [they do] also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction"; |

203 | Q: Why? Why? Why?. A: Because. | Gen 1:1 | kalos | 4830
Have you noticed it's open season for WHY questions? To whom it may concern: When you ask "Why this?" and "Why that?," I don't know what you're getting at. Do you ask "Why" because: A) There are verses in the Bible that you don't believe? B) You won't accept any verse of the Bible unless it is explained to you? (God is not much in the business of answering "Why" questions. Does the thing made say to the One who made it,"Why"?) C) Is it that you do believe the Bible, but you are disagreeing with someone's interpretation of a particular verse or doctrine (which is your right as an American)? D) Or is there a 4th alternative answer to my question? |

205 | May I recommend . . . ? | 1 Corinthians | kalos | 4126
Dear JonnyRay: Thank you for the list of books you provided. May I recommend a small (208 pages), but powerful, volume on the Holy Spirit? It is a classic. "The Spirit Himself", by Ralph M. Riggs, Springfield, Missouri: Gospel Publishing House, Copyright 1949, 1977. What I like about it is that it covers not only the DOCTRINE of the Holy Spirit, but also the PERSON of the Holy Spirit. Here is a brief sample of the book: "MISTAKE TO USE 'IT' WITH REFERENCE TO THE HOLY SPIRIT "The Holy Spirit must never be considered merely as a blessing, a feeling, or an influence. How far short of the full truth it is to refer to Him as 'It.'" (I do not say that any of you all are doing that. I am merely quoting the above as a sample of Riggs' writing.) --JVH0212 |

206 | Revised ques.: What next? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 4102
What is the Holy Spirit? For the record, the Holy Spirit is a "He" not an "it." He is a "who" not a "what." So the primary question would be better phrased, "Who is the Holy Spirit?" On the other hand, whatever the question, the answer is NOT "The Holy spirit is Gods Holy Angels." See also Craig L. Blomberg", pp. 347-348, Baker Theological Dictionary of the Bible, Baker Books, 1996. Available in print and also online at http://bible.crosswalk.com/Dictionaries/BakersEvangelicalDictionary/ Look up: "Holy Spirit" in Baker's. The Father is God. The Son is God. The Holy Spirit is God. The Holy Spirit is a person -- not an it, not a what, not merely an influence, and certainly NOT angels -- but a PERSON. (To Whom It May Concern: That was some clarification of the Holy Spirit. Only 3 "things" in heaven, the Father, the son and the angles? And maybe satan? My only question is: To support your opinion could you cite chapter and verse please? CHAPTER AND VERSE. . . . I see the answer is: NO, you cannot cite chapter and verse for your assertion.) What next? Are we going to be told we should be baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Angels? |

207 | What next? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 4034
"The Holy spirit is Gods Holy Angels." Was this definition copied out of a Jehovah's Witness publication or was it made up on the spur of the moment.? . . . What is the Holy Spirit? For the record, the Holy Spirit is a "He" not an "it." He is a "who" not a "what." So the primary question would be better phrased, "Who is the Holy Spirit?" On the other hand, whatever the question, the answer is NOT "The Holy spirit is Gods Holy Angels." . . . The Holy Spirit "is the author of Scripture, the one who empowers Christ and believers, sovereignly bestows gifts, and can be insulted through apostasy . He sanctifies, inspires prophets, vindicates Christ, and brings blessing to believers . He provides assurance of salvation, testifies to who Jesus is, and produces orthodox Christology. He is the characteristic mark of Christians who pray in him. )Note: "who pray in *him*" not in "*them*". The Spirit creates the states in which John receives his visions, is the source for the messages to the seven churches, and one of the heavenly speakers John overhears. . . . A biblical theology of the Spirit is difficult to epitomize. He sovereignly Acts as he chooses! Most Christian traditions stress the data of certain portions of Scripture (most notably Acts or Paul) at the expense of others. . . . But an essential summary ought to include at least that *the Spirit is the transcendent, omnipresent spiritual and localizable presence of God's personality and power, living in and divinely empowering all of God's true people.* . . . Craig L. Blomberg" (pp. 347-348, Baker Theological Dictionary of the Bible, Baker Books, 1996. 208 | What does the dictionary say? | Ex 20:13 | kalos | 4023
Dear prayon: I agree with you in that "unforgivable" and "unforgiven" are two DIFFERENT words with DIFFERENT meanings. However, I am convinced that some of our post-ers (and I do not mean you) are unaware of the difference between the two words. Rather, they seem to be using both words interchangeably, as if both meant THE SAME THING, which, of course, they do NOT. As I've said before, some on this Forum are throwing around a lot of words, without knowing what those words mean. I sincerely thank you for your input. --JVH0212
209 | What is the sin that IS forgivable? | Ex 20:13 | kalos | 4019
Matt 12:31 (KJV) Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. . . . See, I am wrong again. And apparently Jesus is, too, according to some. I was always taught there is only one unforgivable sin -- the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. But, now I find there are others, as well: divorce, suicide, unforgiveness, fear, doubt, unbelief. The list goes on and on. Perhaps it would simplify things to ask "What is the sin that IS forgivable?" . . . I guess this is what is meant by the term progressive revelation. There used to be *one* unforgivable sin, but now there are at least *six*. |

211 | Evolution? Non-readers, non-believers? | Gen 1:1 | kalos | 3781

212 | Law keeping brings Spirit baptism? | 1 Pet 3:21 | kalos | 3697
Dear bubblejaws: Will keeping God's commandments bring the baptism of the Holy Spirit? You write: "keeping god's commandments will bring the baptism of the holy spirit". Really? For starters, if you could keep the commandments without the baptism, then what do you need the Holy Spirit for? Consider Gal 3:1-2,5 NASB: "You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?...So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?" |

213 | Is suicide a sin? | Ex 20:13 | kalos | 3661
QUESTION: "is suiicide a sin? if it is,is it a willful sin? and what type of sin.God forbid that we should continue in sin that Grace may abound.YIC" . . . MY ANSWER: I think we can safely say that yes, suicide is a sin. I didn't know there was any question about that in anyone's mind. . . . AFTER one commits suicide, surely he will not continue in sin, will he? |

214 | Please tell me: What does "filled" mean? | 1 Cor 12:13 | kalos | 3559
In previous postings, no one was questioning what word ("filled") was used in Scripture. The implied question is: What does the word "filled" MEAN? What good does it do anyone to quote the words of the Bible, if they don't know what those words mean? . . . "DEFINITION: Being filled means being controlled by the Spirit (Eph 5:18)." . . . My question for Ray is: If "being filled" does not mean "being controlled by", then what does it mean? YOU TELL ME: IN *one or two words*, WHAT DOES "BEING FILLED" MEAN? . . . ONE OR TWO WORDS, please. This is a simple question that does not require a 300-word essay. Can you or can you not answer my simple question as I asked it? |
