181 | All Christians suppose to be "Rich"? | Bible general Archive 4 | justme | 214675
humility: This sounds like something TBN Paul and Jan have said. I sure would encourage you to keep you money in your pocket and give to the church you call home. Benny Hinn, Fred Price, Kenneth Copland, Oral Roberts and son, are just a few of these so called "word of faith" false teachers have done more to ship wreck the faith of many people. May God have a special spot for those who become rich in this worlds "things" and yet are bankrupted in the truth of Christ. Jesus was not rich by any means. Paul, James, Peter, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were all rich in Christ, and free from the world and it's rich life. justme |

182 | Bible Version for Lutheran | Bible general Archive 4 | justme | 214399
acs555d: quite sometime ago I worked for Zondervan and did work with Christian Schools. The Lutheran schools were top notch in my opinion, well qualified teachers, and standards that were better than any public school I know of. I can not say what percentage, but often the NIV was used in the grades up to eighth grade. I do not know about the High Schoolers as the material I repersented did not go beyond the eighth grade. Personally I believe the NIV and the NASB two Bibles I would not want to do without. Remember the NIV is a thought for thought translation and the NASB comes as closer to a word for word translation, and does an excellent job. Keep growing. justme |

183 | why gen. 27: 39 differs in kjv vs nasb | Gen 27:39 | justme | 214398
asilra: Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! Very interesting question too. The INTERLINEAR bIBLE by Jay P. Green, Sr. General Editor and Translator. Hendrockson Publishers 1984 says, " and lifted Esau his voice and wept. And Isaac his father and said to him, Behold from the fat of the earth shall be your abode and from of the dew of the heavens above;" The NASB Genesis 27:39 " Then Issac his father answered to him, "Behold, away from the fertility of the earth shall be your dwelling." The NASB is by far the more accurate in translation, as well the NIV. Bothe translations used much older manuscripts, and better educated scholars. The KJV and the NKJV are not up the the better sources that the NASB and the NIV used. I believe the key is the word "from". Does one say it means to take from or to stay away from. I looked at the 2919 in srtongs and then 278 and 276, I believe the "from" means the keep away from. I hope this gives a clearer understanding. And again welcome to the SBF. justme |

184 | can Satan plant thoughts into our minds? | 1 Pet 5:8 | justme | 214334
heseeshission: Good question! I am not so quick to give satan much credit. Lets take the responsibility ourselves. James the first chapter says we are the one in charge of our thoughts and desires, which is where sin starts, in our thoughts. I have wondered how many time satan has a kick out of beibg blamed for something he did not do. It is real easy to say I was tempted, or the devil made me do it. Hope this helps. justme |

fcs375: I have five books that are very good reading obout the Millennium. I believe it is important to at least have knowledge of the four views, and then study Scripture to seek answers for your own personal theology. Here are the five books. THINGS TO COME by J. D. Pentecost Publisher by Zondervan Publishing House 1964. Pentecost is a Dispensational Premillennalialists. THE BIBLE AND THE FUTURE by Anthony A. Hoekema by Rerdmans Punlishing Co. 1982. Hoekema is a Almillennialists and perhaps prestents this view better than most. THE APOCALYPSE CODE by Hank Hanergraaff, by Thomsa Nelson, Inc. 2007. Hanegraaff is the "Bible Answer Man" on Christian Radio. The book is odd in the way Hanegraaff twists and turns and attacks DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISM. Hanegraaff comes to a Almillennialism conclusion. Now the two best books I think best, gives you all four views and allows you to do your own research to come to your own conclusion. THE MEANING OF THE MILLENNIUM: FOUR VIEWS. edited by Robert G. Clouse. By InterVarsity Press 1977. This book has been updated and is very good, I like it best of all. REVELATION FOUR VIEWS A PARALLEL COMMENTARY. eDITED by Steve Gregg, by Thomas Nelson Publishers 1997. This book does a very scholarly book, and is written on a 515 page Masters level book. This is a very good book, but not easy reading. I am sure there many other books that others can give you, but these are the ones I have experienced and know about. I came to the conclusion that each view has merrit and have some very valid points. I am not a Dispensationalist. I find there is no way for someone to sit down and read the Bible and come to such conclusions. I came to the mixture of combining Premillenniaiism and Postmillennialism. Basicly I take Matthew 24 and start there. Then I read Revelation by looking at the history and the meaning for those when it was written, and what meaning has this for me today. Well I hope you have found something worth looking into from my post. Blessings. Justme |

187 | Woman in pants | Deut 22:5 | justme | 213694
kcamb14: Respectfully, I disagree with you. My wife is a subteacher in a public school. She wears a dress when most teachers do not. My wife wears a dress to church on Sundays. The choice is entirely hers. In Missouri in the winter it does get really cold. There is no reason for a woman to wear or a dress in the cold, or for that matter in the summer if she so chooses. In Romans Paul ran into the topic of eating meat or forbidding the eating of meat. Weaker christians were insisting on not allowing meat to be eaten. It boiled down to not offending the weaker christian. The issue of women waring pants is somewhat along that line, in my opinion. Frankly, in the Souther Baptist Church where we are members, we are glad to see people come, in pants or a dress. Women in pants in a church at least know that they are welcome to our church. Perhaps if they don't know Jesus they will accept Him. Maybe even those who just come to worship and hear the Word preached, is just where they belong, pants or dress, the person is far more important than what they wear. The Old Testament laws you are quoting, you are taking out of context. Women wearing pants in no way indicates homosexuality! Justme |

188 | Study Bible | Bible general Archive 4 | justme | 213635
fsc375: There is no way for us to know eveything about something that some Bible scholars have spent many years devoted to just one subject. To be sure there is a bias when someone writes on some Biblical thought or verse. An example is as there are three views of the endtimes, which ever viewpoint a person holds is going to reflect in their writting. Study Bibles sometimes have the same situation. Some may remember the Jimmy Swaggart Study Bible, or the Oral Roberts Study Bible. Both were, in my opinion worthless in the study notes. However, there are many excellent Study Bibles worth the investment, and using the notes to understand and grow in Christ. I highly reccommend. The NIV or NASN or NKJ Study Bible, the Life Application Bible comes in at least three Bible versions. I have a number of Study Bibles, and the two I like best and use the most are the NIV Study Bible, and the NASB Life Application Bible. I use the NASB the most. The Commentary I use most is THE EXPOSITERS BIBLE COMMENTARY published Zondervan and is a 12 volume set of the New Testament only, and is in the NIV version. The Expositors is excellent, I highly reccommend it. The NEW TESTAMENT COMMENTARY writen by Hendriksen PUBLISHED BY Baker is good, and reflects his Amillennialist view point, I use it on an occasional basis. If I might suggest a starting point would be a Exhaustive Concordance in the Bible version you intend to start out with. There is an Exasstive Concordance for every version of the Bible. Personally I have five and use the NASB and NIV Concordances the most. I would strongly suggest VINES EXPOSITORY DICTIONARY OF NEW TESTAMENT WORDS. This helps you to look at root words of the Greek and see exactly what the true meaning of the word is. This also works with the Exhaustive Concordance. There is also and excellent 5 volume set of THE INTERLINEAR BIBLE, which has the Old Testament and New Testament, that works super with the Exhaustive Concordance as well. Frankly, there are so many wonderful tools and helps that are solidly Biblical, to help you grow spiritually. Please do not let such a wonderful treat to grow pass you by. So many Christians around the world don't even have a Bible in their own native tongue. Every Christian should have enough Bible tools to have a small library. If we are serious about our faith in Christ we should be growing all the time, and constantly studing. I want to make my self very clear, study the Scripture first and formost, use these added tools for indepth study. Nothing replaces the knowing the Word of God. If you find you are using helps more than actually being in the Word then you are out of ballance. Who cares what the words mean if you don't have the Word of God in your heart. Now for non biblical documents, they too have a place in studing, but after you have a solid base in understanding the Scriptures. Maybe these documents need to be used in a class og w real teacher. You sound almost like a person in master level seminary studies. I can say without doubt Seminary was exciting, but it seemed there was never enough time to go deep enough to have my hunger filled for knowing more about the Word of God. I still feel that way today, years later. God bless you path in growing in Christ Jesus fcs375. justme |

189 | is a christian allowed to drink | 1 Cor 6:10 | justme | 213559
jeh777: Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! Your question has evoked 17 responces, quite a few. Romans 14:22 says "So whatever you believe about things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condeemm himself by what he approves." NIV. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone reminded me of the verse where Paul tells Timothy to take some wine for his stomach's sake, and how Jesus made real fermented wine at the wedding. These verses have been used to justify why drinking wine is ok for Christians. I have been reminded of these verses from people that have never opened a Bible in their life, and could not find the verses if their lives depended upon it. I use to preach in a rescue mission in Phoenix, AR. and heard these verses used many times. These verses have become twisted, and used especially by those who were attempting to give justification for their drunkeness. I have listened to these verses mentioned in adult Sunday School Classes, when the subject of Christians drinking beer or wine came up. The wine in Jesus time was deluted from a consecrate, and you would have to drink a lot to even begin to feel the effects. Now if someone did not delute the wine it would have been about 15 percent by volume, and would more like the wine of today. What bothers me is there are many places in Scripture where we are warned to not look at the wine when it sparkles. That would have been in the condensed form. But I have never heard those verses quoted to defend why we should not drink. There are several reasons I think Christians should not put themselves in a position to defend drinking. The verse in Romans 14:22 tells us to be wise in what we approve. There are large numbers of families who have suffered because someone who drinks became abusive, and innocent children, and spouses have been the victims of unspeakable horrors. These abuse's have scarred many victims for the rest of their lives. When I found the verse in Romans 14:22 I felt like the Lord hit me with a bolt of lightening. I thought of how easy we as Christians become used by satan in a sort of situation ethics. The subject of drinking wine or beer, can draw us in to a position of putting our testimony at risk by a simple yes on taking a small glass of wine. Brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, we need to be very careful in what we approve of, so not to soil the name we carry....Christians. God bless, and help us to keep our lives pure for the one who Loves us with everything He has....Jesus Christ. justme |

190 | Greiving the Holy Spirit | Is 63:10 | justme | 213495
always lerning: Ephesians 4:30 follows the instructions in verses 28 and 29 listing some actions that grieve the Holy Spirit. Unwholesome words we speak, stealing, laziness, and selfishness. Then in verse 31 Paul continues the list of things that grieve the Holy spirit, bitterness, wrath, anger, slander, malice. Paul give some example of things pleasing for us to be like, kind, tender hearted, forgiving each other as Christ has forgiven us. In Thessalonians 5:19, Paul is refering to tossing the Spiritual gifts the Holy Spirit has given us aside. Pauls warns us to avoid every form of evil, and to be careful how we live, continue to do good and use the gifts given to us. Both verses point to what displeases the Holy Spirit and what does bring glory to the Trinity. When we quench a fire with water we put the fire out. When we quench the Holy Spirit "fire" of the power of God out of our lives. This happens when we do the things Paul mentions in the verses before and after the verses. I hope this gives a little better understanding. justme |

191 | What about these sins? | Matt 16:6 | justme | 213485
always learning: James 1:13-15. With our own evil desires, we are enticed and we fall into sin. We attempt to justify what we did was right. However, there comes a time when we face the truth of our sinful actions. Divorce is a sin, and you married a woman who was divorced. At this point it would be making more sinful choices to again divorce each other. What you did is warned against in Deuteronomy 24:1-4. I wonder if BOTH of you see the sinful situations that brought you two into another sinful situation, that you are in now? Are you both sure beyond a doubt that you have surrendered to Christ? Surrendering to Christ as Lord of your lives is the ONLY hope. The GOOD NEWs of the GOSPEL is Jesus loves you both, and there is forgiveness. You can have a clean heart before the Lord Jesus. 1 John 1:9 is the answer for both of you! All sin is forgiven the same way, we confess our sins. We repent and follow Jesus Christ. Marriage, is a covenant bewteen you and your wife and Jesus Christ. The root of divorce is always hardness of heart. Keep your lives free of sin and hardness of heart. If you did not have pre marriage counseling, it would be of significant value to get marraige theraphy now, or you likely will repeat the mistakes of the past. Marriage needs constant renewing and refreshing to keep love alive and growing. After confessing your sins, be so determined to never brake this covenant of marriage. Never. ever, even consider divorce aa ann option. That is what God expects. Take your past and vow never to allow hardness of heart to enter into this sacred relationship. Who ever married you two, sure dropped the ball if you are still grieving the past history of sin. As our dearly beloved Lord Jesus said to the woman caught in adultery, "Go and sin no more!" you and your wife grow in Christ together, pray with each other, have devoations together. Nothing I know makes a stronger marraige than praying and having Bible devotions together. My bride of almost 40 years and I use the daily Bread for our time of devotions together. We try to have this special time together in the morning, and if we can't do it then, we do it before bedtime. This sometimes due to circumstances we can't have this special time together, so accept this and do have devotions alone, but we look foward to the next special time. I sincerely pray this helps heals, and gives a direction to give your marraige lasting blessings. justme |

Rose53 (:-( I am wondering something. Please understand I want to understand your situation. I am frustrated, and concerned if some on the forum are being used. Why don't you have your books? Doesn't the library have books you can use? Just when do you expect your books to get to you. If you name the books maybe someone here can send you the books if we have copies. This looks like cheating, and I pray it's not, I feel guilty about the help you are getting from the forum. Is this a college or graduate level classes? Thank you for taking the time to respond to me. If you could help us understand, maybe there would be more help if the reason is genuine. Blessings. justme |

MJH :-) I am sure we both have the feeelings of being used. There are some who ask so many questions that clearly reflect the in depth questions that shout loud and clear say "teachers question". I consider such questions as cheating. There is no reason not to use a library, if you don't have the book, or the person has so many responsibilities they don;y have enough time. Learning takes time and it takes work. We in the forum should be careful we are not encouraging help when it is being used to do a persons home work. Amen? justme |

194 | How Holy Is Marriage? | Matt 16:6 | justme | 213379
humility: The assmption you make that same sex marriage is sin, how did you come to this conclusion? I sure hope you came to this undersatnding form the Bible. For my sake we will assume you believe the Bible says same sex, sexual contact of any kind is sin. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says we are not to be yoked with unbelievers. 1 Corinthians 6:12 to 20 and all of 1 Corinthians 7 deals with the questions you ask. Hebrews 13:4 has serious warnings for recreational sex outside of marriage. Romans 1 tells exactally how God allows those who refuse to acknowledge God,to fall into such twisted sexual lives. To bring into focus how messed up Christians have become in adopting the worlds standards, more than 40 percent of Christians have been involved sexually before marriage. Sex is very powerful, and many think they can resist temptation. Often the spirit is willing to follow God, but the flesh is weak. Only with determination and strength from God can Christians remain pure before, and durring marriage. The problem for sexual purity is not just for those getting married. As we have seen year after year there are those who are highly visable in ministry who have broken their marriage vows and became a public shame for Christ. Satan knows sex is a very powerful way to trap Christians. We need to be on constant alert to keep our lives pure. Just look at the TV programs we watch, the movies we buy, the places we go. Recently I started to watch an old "Mash" VCR I had on the shelf from long time ago. After less than 5 minuets I took the tape out and got the 3 other VCR's of "MASH" on the shelf, and put them in the trash. I could see how God has so tenderized my heart. Growth takes time and a willingness to surrender our lives to Christ day by day. Holy Matrimony is constant renewing of our love for our spouse day by day. Blessings. justme |

fcs375: The KJV has has many revisions, and there are in print photo copied KJV Bibles from the 1611 orignal. The letters are really mixed up, the letter U is W and because spelling was not standarized words are not spelled like todays English. Dr. C. Gordon Olson has a book out GETTING THE GOSPEL RIGHT. 374 pages that point out a few flaws in the KJV. The Church in Rome had some influence in the KJV. Dr. Olsons book is a must read as far as I am concerned. The KJV is reliable, and many Christians have loved the way the KJV uses the old English. Many of us grew up with only the KJV. The Lord has used the KJV for several hundred years. The KJV is used by God and to down grade the KJV is foolish. I personally find that there are so many Bible translations and different Study Bibles it's hard to keep up with all the Bibles. There are some very poorly translations that have an agenda that is not in line with what the Bible really says. The New Revised Standard Version, the Todays New International Version, are tow examples of twisted translations with unscriptual renderings, and gender netural renderings. I agree the New American Standard Bible is excellent, and comes as close to using word for word translation as English allows. The English Standard Version many say is goo too. The New International Version is a good thought for thought translation. I think the NIV lacks some depth in fine tunning and tweaking the words to convay the rich depth of some passages. Some of us are blessed to have several versions of the Bible. I for one at times have sever versions of the Bible opened all at the same time. There are many tools to help us look at the Greek and Hebrew and see how exact the words we read in English are to those languages. Studing the Scriptures is a lifetime of study and learning. There is no human who knows all about the Bible. You might get together with your Pastor and ask what version he uses and what reccomendations he has. The Torah only has the first old testament books. Jews do not accept the New Testament or Jesus Christ as the only Son of God, by who we are saved. Hope this helps. justme |

198 | Question about Fasting | Matt 15:32 | justme | 213118
loyal1357: Fasting was done by our Lord Jesus in Matthew 4:2. Fasting and prayer go together. In Matthew 6:16 to 18, we are are cautioned not to tell people when we are fasting. Have you ever known someone who said they were fasting? We are told to be quiet and keep it between the Lord and us. When I hear someone say they are fasting I think that is their reward as Jesus said. My opinion is a fast is done in a time when we are to be devoted to reading the Word, and in deep prayer. However, if you are fasting at work, that is just bewteen you and Jesus. There are different kinds of fasting for those on medication or who are required to eat at regular times for medical reasons. So fasting can be adapted to our lives. This would be an excellent time to re evealuate our spiritual weakness and areas we have grown in. Fasting could be a time of seeking the Lords will for understanding for a direction you must choose to go. Blessings. justme |

199 | Ananias and Sapphira paid for their sin | Acts 5:9 | justme | 213042
keliy: James 5:19 and 20, I believe might shed some light on death and some sins. I have no exact idea what sins the Father considers that death is better than letting the person go deeper into sin. However, by these verses it seems to me that is what is being said. Believers do get involved in sins that make them wander from the truth. Ananias and Sapphira did wander from the truth and paid with their human lives. They were spared spiritual death if they were genuine believers. Salvation is eternal, but even our Father in Heaven has a limit to our wandering from Him. I hope this adds some insight for you. Blessings. justme |

200 | to whom should we pray/ | Matt 6:9 | justme | 212847
hopalong: I often start my prayers with HOLY FATHER, or Heavenly Father. I have had times when all I could do is cry out Oh Jesus I need your help. I have even prayed out Oh Lord hear my plea. In Romans 8:15 it says Abba, which means Father. In Romans 8:26 to 28 the Holy Spirit intercedes for us also when all we can do is cry out or groan in pain. That's my take on the verses. I believe if you are born again and call the Almighty what every is used in Scripture that is right and good. I am of the thinking the Lord is pleased to know we are seeking Him and wanting to surrender to His will for us. Blessings. justme |
