1662 | Scripture alone? | James 1:5 | stjohn | 191910
You are correct, a thesaurus and dictionary are not scripture; conversely, scripture is not a thesaurus or dictionary, they are nonetheless trusted sources of information on the english language, the words are indeed synonyms and therefore mean the same thing. Splitting heirs is very difficult without a very good magnifying glass and a very sharp blade, even at that it is something I don't care to engage in, sorry, but I don't think it's very efficacious. I've given you what I believe is a good answer, and I'm confident that it is correct. I hope you have fun with your game, but I will humbly and I hope gracefully refrain from participation. God bless John |

1663 | all good things come to those who wait | James 1:17 | stjohn | 216155
Makarios and Keliy, I think you both did an excellent job! I did a word search and, you know I was amazed at how many verses show that waiting for the Lord will bring good things to those who do. I think we can take that statement to the bank of holy writ! :-) Ps 27:14, Ps 33:20, Ps 37:7, Ps 37:9, Ps 37:34, Ps 40:1, Ps 130:5, Ps 130:6, Ps 147:11, Prov 20:22, Is 8:17, Is 25:9, Is 40:31, Is 49:23, Is 60:9. Lam 3:25-26 "The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him. It is good that he waits silently for the salvation of the LORD." :-) John |

1664 | Is this The Right Tongues?!!!! | James 1:20 | stjohn | 197676
Hi Val, I'm not putting down your suggestion, It's a good one! But that might be quite a task! It seems a person would have to copy the whole Bible! :-) God bless John "The Old Testament is summed up in the word Christ; the New Testament is summed up in the word Jesus; and the summary of the whole Bible is that Jesus is the Christ." —Bishop Pollock Merry Christmas. |

1665 | Is this The Right Tongues?!!!! | James 1:20 | stjohn | 197679
Dear Sister Val, Thank you for the suggestion. I would have to say though that to claim that any one method of study is the bast one would depend entirely on that persons level of education and cognitive ability, especially if we don't know the individuals standing in said education and or ability. Are there any published results of such a study? I don't see in Scripture where God has laid out any particular methodology for study. Like I said your suggestion is a good one, my comment was just good a natured pointing out that the entirety of Scripture is about Jesus the Christ. Certainly there are different methods of study that are appropriate for different levels of education and ability, to suggest that any one of them is the best is dubious, at best. I wasn't looking for advice my Sister, but perhaps just an amen. Sense you bring it up though, the task you set may be a bit daunting for a new believer. Even a cursory browse of the web would show that there are many good methods of study, I doubt if any one is best for all. But the all important thing is to study, amen? :-) God bless John |

Dear Val, Thanks for the amen by the way. It's painfully plain that you're not interested in any other method or approach to Bible study, but want to push your own, so I'll end this with; Yes Ma'am. God bless John p.s. Sorry I just thought to engage in a 'two way' discussion, I guess it just ant so. |

Thanks Doc, I'll check out the website. And I agree with the problem not being what method, I think I was pretty clear on that in my previous posts, and your right, without motivation no method will work. :-) I've been somewhat familiar with those methods of study from reading some of your old posts on Hermeneutic exegesis and I'm just getting to know Dever. I've been listing to some of his sermons/lectures at 9Marks, I have about 20 so far on mp3, very good stuff! I'm also quite involved in reading the reformers bios. I'm lovin it! I'm playing catch-up after 50 some years of being a lacker and a slacker. There is so much to learn, I hope it, (learning about God, getting to know His word, His Heart, His People, and His Angels) will go on to eternity, I believe it will. God bless John |

Very good advice brother!
1670 | Kill your brother and drink strong drink | James 2:10 | stjohn | 211035
Dear Pete, my friend you're really missing the whole point of the Bible as God's Word of truth to man. It is the story of Mans fall from grace into sin and God ultimately giving Himself as a Sacrifice for mans redemption. This form by the way is not a platform for pedantic nuisance. Please take bother CDBJ's advice and go to the New Testament and read it first, so you can get acquainted with Jesus Christ, then you can go to the Old Testament to get to know him better. :-) Maybe then, you can stop pestering your Pastor. By the way Welcome to the forum. God bless John |

1671 | Kill your brother and drink strong drink | James 2:10 | stjohn | 211042
What she is saying is, God tells us to obey the law of the government in which we live as well as obey God. --"Then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Him in what He said. And they sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any. "Tell us then, what do You think? Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?" But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, "Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites? "Show Me the coin used for the poll-tax." And they brought Him a denarius. And He said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They said to Him, "Caesar's." Then He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's." And hearing this, they were amazed, and leaving Him, they went away." -- Matthew 22:15-22 Again, Pete, please read the New Testament-!! It will help you in your understanding! :-) God bless John |

Hi Pete, pedantic means ostentatious in the way we learn , or being too concerned with small formal details or even ism's in teaching. Sorry Pete, I didn't mean to be harsh with you it was a tongue in cheek comment, and we seem to get a lot of kooks around here after and around the full moon too. :-) So I was perhaps a little presumptuous, again I'm sorry if I shocked or offended you my friend. :-) God bless John p.s. May the Lord bless you in your studies! |

1674 | Kill your brother and drink strong drink | James 2:10 | stjohn | 211051
Dear Pete, once again the New Testament will shed light on what your Pastor is trying to teach you. you wrote: "I'm not excessive at all but I do enjoy a buzz two or three times a week. Why should I not obey God's word?" Really? "a buzz two or three times a week" ?? Well, Pete, here is some of God's Word... Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 1 Corinthians 6:10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. It is believed by most Bible scholars that the "strong drink" mentioned in Deut 14:26 was NOT for getting drunk, or a, "Buzz" as you call it, but merely to drink with the food they were eating as was available to them for drink, and customarily contemporary. You should take your Pastors advice. He has your best interest in mind from a clearly Biblical perspective, I'm quite sure. God bless John |

Hi Pete: Just one more point I'd like to make that is of no small importance, though we, for obvious legalistic and other executively decided reasons, do not allow minors (children) to post to the Study Bible Forum, however, since this is a public forum, we do know that they quite probably, read along. Do you think your view is giving them good advice when you say it's okay in God's eyes to get a "buzz" from alcohol? Just something to think about before you post to a public forum. Mark 9:42 "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe to stumble, it would be better for him if, with a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea. God bless John |

Dear Keliy: I'd like to thank you for a good post. Well done my friend. I see from your post, and profile, that you are a turn of the millennium child of God :-) We have something in common (other then the most important thing in the universe and all eternity, i.e. in Christ) but that we are both turn of the millennium Children of God. Shalom and blessings John |

1678 | Lying is a sin. Rahab did it for the en, | James 2:25 | stjohn | 216950
Hey, Brother Doc, you can send me that book if you like. I would really love to have one! I like to read just about everything I can get my hands on! My birthday's comming up in a couple months too. :-) :-) John |

1679 | Lying is a sin. Rahab did it for the en, | James 2:25 | stjohn | 216961
Dear Vintage, Our knowledge of Rahab is limited by what the Scriptures tell us. Therefor, to say what she was thinking, one way or another, as far as her motivation would be concerned, is speculation, and does not adhere the doctrine of sola Scriptura. What the Scriptures do tell us, is that she was justified by her faith, and that would mean she was indeed a believer, and not (unsaved). She did not put her faith in the spies, that would not justify her; so her faith must be of the sort that was in God, in order to be justified by said faith. John |

Hey, Doc, I was kidding, you don't have to buy me one. :-) Just give me the name of it, and I'll get my pastor to buy it for our Church. He's part owner of a Christian book store and can get it at the wholesale price! :-) John |
