Cuddle, You've asked a very interesting question and I'm enjoying reading the answers that are being given. Not only am I enjoying them, I'm also learning from them. The Bible study tool I use more than any other is the website www.StudyLight.org. It is packed with many different Bible versions and study helps including: an interlinear Bible, commentaries, concordances, dictionaries, encyclopedias, lexicons and more. At this website what I use more than anything else is the Search the Bible (concordance) feature. Another favorite feature at StudyLight.org is the Parallel Bible. (All these features are listed at the left of the homepage under the heading Study Resources.) The Parallel Bible allows you to compare any two of the versions available at this website in a side-by-side, verse-by-verse format. It even highlights variations in the text between two translations. My poor powers of description are limited. The best thing to do would be to go to the website and check it out for yourself. The most important tool in my library of books is the concordance. Another valuable book is my Bible dictionary. I use Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Dictionary. There are others that are equally good, but Nelson's is the one I am familiar with. A good Bible dictionary contains more information than any study Bible. This is outside the scope of your question, but I use the MacArthur Study Bible more than any other. I have used it every day since I joined Study Bible Forum on February 26, 2001. Grace to you, John * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. 162 | "The wise lay up knowledge" | Prov 10:14 | kalos | 182756
Ignorance of the Bible is no virtue; and knowledge of it is no vice. (All Scripture quotations are from the English Standard Version.) Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Pr 1:22 How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Pr 2:10 for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; Pr 8:10 Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, Pr 10:14 The wise lay up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near. Pr 11:9 With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous are delivered. Pr 13:16 In everything the prudent acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly. Pr 14:6 A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding. Pr 14:7 Leave the presence of a fool, for there you do not meet words of knowledge. Pr 15:2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly. Pr 15:7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge; not so the hearts of fools. Pr 15:14 The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly. Pr 18:15 An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. Pr 20:15 There is gold and abundance of costly stones, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. Pr 23:12 Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge. Pr 24:4 by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. Pr 24:5 A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might, |

Cuddle, I think perhaps you and I got off to a bad start when you first started posting to the Forum. The fault is mine. I frequently come across sounding harsher and more critical than I intend to. I apologize if I offended you in any way. I've been reading your posts with interest and hope that you will consider me your friend and ally. Grace and peace, John |

Hank, You write: "I don't clutter up any Bible that I own by writing in it -- no marginal notes and no highlighting or underlining. I do jot down notes with some frequency, but I do my jotting in a separate place, in a notebook/journal sort of thing." Amen! I do the same. I don't write in or mark up my Bible. When I make notes I do it in a separate place. One reason I don't highlight or mark a Bible is because of what I experienced long ago. In the early 70s I was reading and using a certain New Testament. In my enthusiasm I highlighted all the passages I found especially helpful or interesting. The only problem was that upon subsequent readings -- especially my daily Bible reading -- I was paying more attention to the highlighted passages and sort of overlooking the ones that weren't highlighted. Since then I have ceased highlighting so that when I read the Bible I will pay equal attention to all of it. Also, like you, I don't like the idea of making a mess of my Bibles. I don't condemn other for their practice of making notes and marking the text. After all, it's not a sin. :-) It's just that I prefer not to do it. Grace to you, John |

Saved, When I wrote the previous post, I was quoting another writer. I know enough about some of the leading programs on TBN to know that they are teaching very bad doctrine. But I don't know enough about TBN to list which shows are cults and which are not. What I can do is refer you to a document on the web that discusses some of the major false teachings of many preachers who are featured on TBN. To read the article go to: www.equip.org/free/DC755-2.htm In referring you to this website, it is not my aim to unjustly criticize anyone. However, bad doctrine is bad doctrine, which is dangerous and harmful. People have a right to know and Christians have an obligation to warn others of false teaching, whatever the source. We are not to coddle, excuse, or tolerate false doctrine. We are to expose and refute it. Grace to you, John |

TBN 'Paul Crouch* 'Paul Crouch and his wife, Jan, are the founders of the Trinity Broadcasting Network, which today has an estimated net worth of half a billion dollars. As Crouch himself puts it, "God has, indeed, given us the MOST POWERFUL VOICE in the history of the WORLD."65 Unfortunately, this voice is being used to promote teachings straight from the kingdom of the cults. Crouch's influence has become so vast that he can now raise as much as 50 million dollars during a single "Praise-a-Thon." What many of the well-intentioned Christians who support TBN do not know, however, is that part of this money goes to promoting cultic groups and individuals who not only deny the Trinity but claim that this essential of Christianity is a pagan doctrine.66 It is indeed ironic that a broadcasting network called "Trinity" would promote anti-Trinitarian doctrine. 'To those who would speak out against the false teachings proliferated on his network, Crouch has this to say: "I think they're damned and on their way to hell; and I don't think there's any redemption for them."67 Shortly after I met with Crouch to prove that the Faith movement compromises essential Christian doctrine, Crouch looked into the lens of the television camera and angrily declared, "If you want to criticize Ken Copeland for his preaching on faith, or Dad Hagin, get out of my life! I don't even want to talk to you or hear you. I don't want to see your ugly face. Get out of my face, in Jesus' name."68' _______________ *Paul Crouch. The home includes a dock, spa, pool and gazebo. 'In the news: Howard-Browne has called himself the "bartender of holy laughter." Holy laughter was a controversial movement that swept evangelical circles in the mid-1990s. He would walk on stage laughing uncontrollably. The congregation would begin laughing. Howard-Browne would sweep his arm toward the crowd. People would appear "drunk on the Holy Spirit" and slide out of their chairs or dance in the aisles.' ____________________ St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 11/18/2003 (http://www.stltoday.com/) matt2411 |

171 | Who are "the elect"? | Gal 3:29 | kalos | 182645
Ebrain, I know what you mean and I agree. I'm not saying that a lesser respect for the NT is a standard teaching of Messianic believers. It's just that this particular Messianic believer, the one I'm talking about, does seem to regard the NT as inferior to the Old. For one thing, this person believes the NT was originally written in Hebrew, then translated into Greek. And that in the translation from Hebrew to Greek, much of the original meaning was lost. Again, not all Messianic believers hold to this, but some do. I appreciate your replies and your recommendation of ariel.org and moriel.org. I'll look into them. Grace to you, John |

172 | HOLY Spirit before Disciple of Jesus | Eph 5:18 | kalos | 182644
Question: Can one be filled with the Holy Spirit and speak in other tongues without first of all being a disciple of Jesus? Before I could answer your question as you asked it, I would need to know how you define the word "disciple". One thing is certain: one of the conditions for being filled with the Holy Spirit is a dedicated life. 'Yielding to the Spirit's control, though commanded, is voluntary and necessitates an act of dedication. This includes two aspects: initial dedication (Rom 12:1-2) and continual dedication of one's life (Rom 8:14)' (Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition, Moody, 1986, 1995). And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18 NASB Grace to you, John |

Machaira, Good point and well put. It is said that Scripture is its own best commentary. It is also true that sometimes the best commentary is a good translation, as you have demonstrated here. Along with the English Standard Version, which you quoted, 'the New American Standard Bible gives the sense of Isaiah 45:6-7 more clearly: "There is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, the One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these." In other words, God devises calamity as a judgment for the wicked. But in no sense is He the author of evil' ((www.gty.org). 175 | "Sin is not itself a thing created." | Is 45:7 | kalos | 182635
"Sin is not itself a thing created." "It is helpful, I think, to understand that sin is not itself a thing created. Sin is neither substance, being, spirit, nor matter. So it is technically not proper to think of sin as something that was created." ____________________ "If God is sovereign, does that make Him responsible for evil? "No. Scripture says that when God finished His creation, He saw everything and declared it "very good" (Genesis 1:31). Many Scriptures affirm that God is not the author of evil: "God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone" (James 1:13). "God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). "God is not the author of confusion" (1 Corinthians 14:33)--and if that is true, He cannot in any way be the author of evil. ____________________ "...in no sense is He [God] the author of evil. "Evil originates not from God but from the fallen creature." ____________________ "Occasionally someone will quote Isaiah 45:7 (KJV) and claim it proves God made evil as a part of His creation: "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things". "But the New American Standard Bible gives the sense of Isaiah 45:6-7 more clearly: "There is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, the One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these." In other words, God devises calamity as a judgment for the wicked. But in no sense is He the author of evil. "Evil originates not from God but from the fallen creature. I agree with John Calvin, who wrote, "'. . . the Lord had declared that "everything that he had made . . . was exceedingly good" [Gen. 1:31]. Whence, then comes this wickedness to man, that he should fall away from his God? Lest we should think it comes from creation, God had put His stamp of approval on what had come forth from himself. By his own evil intention, then, man corrupted the pure nature he had received from the Lord; and by his fall drew all his posterity with him into destruction. Accordingly, we should contemplate the evident cause of condemnation in the corrupt nature of humanity--which is closer to us--rather than seek a hidden and utterly incomprehensible cause in God's predestination. [Institutes, 3:23:8]' ____________________ "...sin is not itself a thing created." ____________________ "It is helpful, I think, to understand that sin is not itself a thing created. Sin is neither substance, being, spirit, nor matter. So it is technically not proper to think of sin as something that was created. Sin is simply a want of moral perfection in a fallen creature. Fallen creatures themselves bear full responsibility for their sin. And all evil in the universe emanates from the sins of fallen creatures. "For example, Romans 5:12 says that death entered the world because of sin. Death, pain, disease, stress, exhaustion, calamity, and all the bad things that happen came as a result of the entrance of sin into the universe (see Genesis 3:14-24). All those evil effects of sin continue to work in the world and will be with us as long as sin is. "First Corinthians 10:13 promises us that God will not permit a greater trial than we can bear. And James 1:13 tells us that God will not tempt us with evil. ____________________ "God is certainly sovereign over evil. . . . But God's role with regard to evil is never as its author." ____________________ "God is certainly sovereign over evil. There's a sense in which it is proper even to say that evil is part of His eternal decree. He planned for it. It did not take Him by surprise. It is not an interruption of His eternal plan. He declared the end from the beginning, and He is still working all things for His good pleasure (Isaiah 46:9-10). "But God's role with regard to evil is never as its author. He simply permits evil agents to work, then overrules evil for His own wise and holy ends. Ultimately He is able to make all things--including all the fruits of all the evil of all time--work together for a greater good (Romans 8:28)" (www.gty.org). ____________________ For further study: Jay Adams, The Grand Demonstration (Santa Barbara CA: Eastgate,1991). 176 | Isaiah 45:7 "God created evil"? | Is 45:7 | kalos | 182631
Did God create evil? (Source: www.gotquestions.org/did-God-create-evil.html) ‘At first it might seem that if God created all things then evil must have been created by God. However, there is an assumption here that needs to be cleared up. Evil is not a "thing" - like a rock or electricity. You can't have a jar of evil! Rather, evil is something that occurs, like running. Evil has no existence of its own - it is really a lack in a good thing. For example, holes are real but they only exist in something else. We call the absence of dirt a hole - but it cannot be separated from the dirt. So when God created, it is true that all that existed was good. One of the good things that God made was creatures who had the freedom to choose good. In order to have a real choice, God had to allow there to be something besides good to choose. So God allowed these free angels and humans to choose good or non-good (evil). When a bad relationship exists between two good things we call that evil, but it does not become a "thing" that required God to create it. ‘Perhaps a further illustration will help. If I were to ask the average person "does cold exist?" - his/her answer would likely be yes. However, this is incorrect. Cold does not exist. Cold is the absence of heat. Similarly, darkness does not exist. Darkness is the absence of light. Similarly, evil is the absence of good, or better, evil is the absence of God. God did not have to create evil, but rather only allow for the absence of good. ‘Look at the example of Job in Job chapters 1-2. Satan wanted to destroy Job, and God allowed Satan to do everything but kill Job. God allowed this to happen to prove to Satan that Job was righteous because he loved God, not because God had blessed him so richly. God is sovereign and ultimately in control of everything that happens. Satan cannot do anything unless he has God's "permission." God did not create evil, but He allows evil. If God had not allowed for the possibility of evil, both mankind and angels would be serving God out of obligation, not choice. He did not want “robots” that simply did what He wanted them to do because of their "programming." God allowed for the possibility of evil so that we could genuinely have a free will and choose whether we wanted to serve Him or not. ‘Ultimately, there is not an answer to these questions that we can fully comprehend. We, as finite human beings, can never fully understand an infinite God (Romans 11:33-34). Sometimes we think we understand why God is doing something, only to find out later that it was for a different purpose than we originally thought. God looks at things from an eternal perspective. We look at things from an earthly perspective. Why did God put man on earth knowing that Adam and Eve would sin and therefore bring evil, death, and suffering on all mankind? Why didn’t He just create us all and leave us in Heaven where we would be perfect and without suffering? The best answer I can come up with is this: God didn’t want a race of robots who did not have a free will. God had to allow the possibility of evil for us to have a true choice of whether to worship God or not. If we never had to suffer and experience evil, would we truly know how wonderful heaven is? God did not create evil, but He allowed it. If He hadn’t allowed evil, we would be worshipping Him out of obligation, not by a choice of our own free will.’ Recommended Resource: The Problem of Evil by Charles Colson Related Topics: Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? 177 | Who are "the elect"? | Gal 3:29 | kalos | 182625
Who are the elect? Is it Israel only or is it all believers, Jews and Gentiles alike? The New Testament writers frequently use the term "the elect." My question is not a general question about the theology of election or, as some call it, predestination. My question is about how the term "the elect" is used, particularly in the New Testament. Does "the elect" mean only the nation of Israel? Or does it mean the NT church, which includes both Jewish and Gentile believers? A Messianic believer recently told me that when the Bible speaks of "the elect" it is speaking of Israel only. I disagree, but I need help in explaining to him why I disagree. Can anyone provide me with Bible-based information I could use to show him that the Bible term "the elect" does not apply solely to Israel? I'm asking for this information not for the purpose of winning an argument. I merely want to be able to show my friend the truth of the matter. Any factual, biblical information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Genesis 6:3 does not say man's days are limited to 120 years. This is what it says: Genesis 6:3 NET BIBLE So the Lord said, “My spirit will not remain in mankind indefinitely since they are mortal. They will remain for one hundred and twenty more years.”[11] 11 Translators' Note. Heb “his days will be one hundred and twenty years.” Some interpret this to mean that the age expectancy of people from this point on would be one hundred twenty, but neither the subsequent narrative nor reality favors this. It is more likely that this refers to the time remaining between this announcement of judgment and the coming of the flood. (www.bible.org/netbible/index.htm ) As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, Or if due to strength, eighty years, (NASB Psalm 90:10a) |
